Christmas Trek 2025 ideas?

Anyone should be able to create a topic with a vote.

But if need be list thenoptions and I can set one up later today.

I am sorry to say that the FSX/P3D conversion is… while free… pretty underwhelming. It is very much ctrl+E & full throttle and let’s go fly aircraft. The cockpit is not clickable and nav non-existent.

Might also work in MSFS 2024 - worth checking. I was thinking about the Connie as well but got enough hangar queens to take out this year’s Christmas flight so will hold off maybe.

How is that one to fly? I was eyeing it a while ago and…

2025 Christmas flight poll

Which are your three preferred destinations for this year’s Christmas flight? (multiple-choice; please try to stick to three options max)

  • Livingstone with the Victoria Falls in Zambia
  • Lapland in Finland as Santas home
  • Sydney as a nice Summer-feel Christmas destination
  • nature preserves in Uganda
  • Tanzania
  • Okavango Delta in Botswana
  • Madagascar and find a lemur king
  • Namibia
  • NZRC south in New Zealand

Perhaps let’s keep the poll opened till the end of this week so that everyone who wants to participate in the flight has a chance to express his/her(?) preferences.

I found it to be quite forgiving, also the engine power was changed in an update in between the Trek. It was easy to overspeed in a dive. I had two times a problem that I basically fell out of the sky - I failed to recover when this happened on low altitude and low speed, usually at approach. Not sure what it triggered, I might have forgotten to toggle from travel tanks to start tanks, but I don’t recall any harsh maneuvers or so, that might be responsible.

From an optical point of view, I found the Condor to be a gem. Probably I’m not too spoiled after flying more mods than I can count in a3, DCS and FS2020. I was impressed by the artwork, and also the fuel management system.

Not sure it got fully updated to FS2024 standards?

Oh, also the Latecoere was built to fly down to Africa IIRC and is a beautiful ship (literally) to fly!

We’ve got 11 participants casting 31 votes. Thank you all.

Now, since Madagascar is a pretty huge island (actually larger than metropolitan France or California), anyone has a suggestion about which airport exactly to fly to?

King Julien International?

I believe FMSD( Tolagnaro) is the Sothern most. Runway comes in at 1800 meters.

FMMI is the main international airport in the middle of the island. 3100 meter runway.

Both are asphalt runways,

My vote is for FMSD.

It is a relatively short hop from continental Africa and I am spoiled for choice when it comes to aircraft. Plenty that can use a 1800m runway so FMSD works for me.

Oooh, I have friends at the Duke Lemur Center, which does extensive work on the island in several different capacities.

This is going to be fun, and get ready for more educational posts to go with the legs!

Also I’ll +1 FMSD.

Which airport is closest to the Lemur Center?

The Lemur Center is in Durham, NC so the closest airport is RDU.

The research and conservation work in Madagascar is conducted within the national parks, as well as partnering with universities and local community groups and leaders to conduct their work and research in country. There’s a lot of other disciplines outside of Biology that are also involved in the work and partnerships within the country.

I’ll definitely be talking about it. :grinning:

Well, RDU is a long way from Madagascar , but maybe I can drop into RDU on the way. Actually, if I ever find myself in RDU while on the road, I would definitely like to visit the center.

Looks great, can I just take off and land on any water surface with it, space allowing? I’ve never done a water start or landing in FS2024 so far, so that would be cool.

I think I used some seaplane base mod in 2020. But, it might have some accommodation for either dropping it off field now.

Or drop it over the water and slew it to the surface, which I’m pretty sure I had to do on my Trans Pac a few years ago.

Worked fine, but you may need to shut the engines down if you want to do a cold and dark startup.

Beautiful plane though!

As a heads up, Paul, you’ll have to call ahead to schedule the tickets; they limit admission in the interest of research schedules and not overloading the residents - but it’s an awesome place. We’ve been probably 3-4 times with the kids.

Also, for anybody else who grew up on PBS kids shows in the 90s, both Kratt brothers studied Zoology at Duke, and Zaboomafoo was played by a Coqueral’s sifaka Lemur named “Jovian.”
