Very nice article on the A-6:
That was an absolutely FASCINATING read. Thanks for posting it! Really looking forward to part 2.
Great read.
Loved this quote.
- We had a not-so-stealthy manner of doing awesome fly-bys of the Officer’s Club, which was on the beach at NAS Whidbey Island. Coming back to base you could request an “Intruder Attack.” If the pattern was clear, it was generally approved. Ostensibly, we were conducting a practice bombing run on the valuable assets of the base. In reality, it was a license to do a 200 foot, 420-knot run right over all your buddies heads at the club.

Before Jell-O started his fighter pilot podcast Rogoways longread interviews with various people were the closest we got. He used to do 'em for foxtrot-alpha then moved to thedrive.
You guys should check out that piece on the F-111…
Really enjoyed that - thanks @MBot
Such a nice aircraft…
Without any modifications, the A-6 could carry 28 MK-82 500-pound bombs. If the gear doors were removed, it was an even 30. That was 15,000 pounds of ordnance on a plane that only weighed 27,000 pounds empty. Fill her up with gas and we were launching off the deck in 300 feet, zero to 160 knots, at 60,000 pounds of gross weight.
Imagine doing that grumman airwing thing in our sim… yum!
I’ve been saying this right here all along.
