Cpu Cooling Options

We label engines as liquid cooled vs air cooled as well even though liquid cooled engines have a water->air heat exchanger. It’s about the primary coolant. I do get your point about heatpipes, though.

A very good point!
Neither aircooled nor liquid cooled engines will survive without airflow, but the liquid coolers also need the coolant and the pump.

AFAIK we used to make a distinction between heatsinks and heatpipes, when heatpipes were a novelty. But now it’s just ’aircooler’.

Well, it had heatpipes and those contain a coolant liquid.

Unless you’re running open loop liquid cooling. e.g. Submerged marine engine, electric motors…

True, good thinking - might not be a long term cooling solution!  :grimacing:

One added advantage of a High End Thermal case and liquid cooling is the fact my tower weighs 75 US pounds ! LoL !

If someone were to break in while we were away, ( Doing so while I was home would simply by a major error in judgement) and try to grab my tower and run, it would be easy to catch them, because at 75 # s , their hands , arms, and probably Shoulders would still be here , where the ripped off from the unexpected weight of my tower .

Which case are you guys and gals using?
As I see a future upgrade for VR.

This is the case I went with.

Its huge, but I have had no issues with it.

My case is an oldie that I’m not even sure you could get anymore (or would want for that matter). It’s a Cooler Master HAFX.

Old nzxt phantom here. It’s like 8 years old? 9? 10? Which reminds me so is my PSU… Crazy. Only two remaining parts from the original build other than the fans I think.

Do you fly X-Plane11? I couldn’t get it to run stably at 5GHz. Had to drop back to 4.8.

HPN was a HAF932 - great series of cases for the time, couldn’t upcycle due to lack of radiator headroom (which is a problem in a lot of even current cases except super towers).

That was my old case as well, loved that one.
Sold my old build to a friend and he’s still rockin’ it.
Felt like it was much sturdier build than newer cases (like thicker steel perhaps, can’t be sure) I have viewed in-store.

Both my builds are now in Corsair 750D Airflow cases, also sported by @AndyE!

I had problems with this as well, but it works now. Don’t know if it was the latest 11.5 update or if it happened in an earlier update.

Just installed my shiny new ( I mean silent new ) NOCTUA NH-U12S, what a difference!
I mean I used boxed CPUs in the past and it was OK, at least thats what I thought.

The temp is around 50 in XP11 (loading and playing). I reached quite often 75 at loading.

Great fit in my mATX case

This CPU i7 9700 was the first one I cooled with a Noctua fan and I’ve been VERY pleased with the performance.
