Cue - irrational anger (your annual Take On Helicopters rant)

Hello there,

New to the forum and also fairly new to the flight sim community.
Not sure where to post this message as i didn’t find a lot of room for TOH: Hinds

I’m suffurring from the painful syndrom of the “TOH’s post-campaign enduced vacuum”. It was my first Heli sim (after playing IL2 BoX for few months). I couldn’t stand leaving the game after the official content and ended up bying the Hinds DLC earlier this month.
I read a lot about the lack of content but had a good hopes on the community made missions. However, I can’t find any online, appart from the Heli-4-Rent mode for the civil part of TOH.

I found BeachAV8R’s ARR article about CHERNARUS and found the link at the end of it, which is much appreciated.
I’m looking for more of these missions, scripted or not.
I understood BTK & TeTeT have developped a randomly generated mission script but i couldn’t find any traces of it.

Thanks anyway for all the info available on this website.

Welcome! ToH—what a blast from the past! I haven’t thought of that game in years. I loved it and still long for the day when other combat sims allow players to roam and interact and stop pretending that the cockpit is only world the player can inhabit.

Hinds on the other hand was a pre-mature, egregious cash-grab and the community reacted pretty harshly to it once they realized they’d been had.

Your best bet is to either shift to ArmA3 which has a lot of modded helicopter content or use the TKOH integration with ArmA2 to get a more expansive experience. ArmA3 really is a lot more flexible than TKOH, even if it’s missing a few key features, and will probably scratch the itch you’re looking for.

Thanks for your answers.
I did found a lot more content on ArmA3 for Helicopters (so far the ones created by Robj on the steam workshop), which looks promissing.
I was planning to enjoy a bit more TOH before moving to Arma3. But I guess I’ll upgrade right away. And maybe one day, i’ll find the time and courage to start on DCS.

As for the cash-grabbing, I got the Bohemia Interactive Humble Bundle and the Hinds DLC for and extra 2€ on sales, which was a fairly good introduction investment ! Buy low, Flight high!

Yeah - as others have mentioned, there is some pretty good helicopter action content for Arma 2 and Arma 3. You kind of have to dig around at either Armaholic or the Steam Workshop to find some of them. Most are not quite as developed as the ToH campaign (which I thought was pretty good). And if you haven’t played the Tarnished Gold campaign for Arma 2 (which @Franze and Nodunit collaborated on) - it is very much worth a run through:

No. No. No. I have nearly 2000hrs in arma 3 and you will NOT make poor old victork2 fall down the rabbit hole again. Please…

I’ve never seen that CH-53 mission before though. That’s irritated me slightly as its a very long and involved process for me to install the 60 billion mods I had for arma 3.

But that mission looks awesome.

I’m in Pikesville, Kentucky with an irrational desire to climb in this helicopter to find some Varna agents in the woods…

I could happily land that on the top floor of the green guard towers between the roof and the the rail around the edge.

One of my top moments online was getting obliterated by some enemies camping on one of those towers and when we all respawned I dropped a gang of shooters straight on top of them and we utterly wrecked them. So. Much. Loot. Man I loved epochhqdefault-1

My recollection of the series is that this was always a problem. Now I’m curious and am thinking it’s worth dusting off on a few months time when my simpit is revised. Good excuse to make a collective…

That said, IIRC, the game was -and still is, extremely ‘open’ in terms of its ability to accept third party content. The dearth of freeware mods (vice Arma II/III) serves as an indicator it just never really got off the ground, and yes I intended that pun, #DadJokes4Dayz.

Personally though, I wish they’d taken the A3 Helo DLC further and made a ToH 2. The A3 engine runs a lot better.

If positioned well, it really had the chance to be Strike Fighters for helos. Not perfect by any means, but not an arcade game either, and it’s open moddability and resulting deep (and free!) content library would give it the breadth that makes up for it’s relative lack of depth. But unlike SF, to me it’s biggest issue was how poorly it ran. SF always ran well for me; low pc overhead being part of it’s value proposition. ToH required constant tweaking, and never quite looked or felt right.

Disagree somewhat on the FPS aspect. I think ToH had enough to feel like you were ‘in’ the world, including pre-flighting the helo, the post brief ‘walk out’ to a cold/dark bird, and the feeling of tying her down at the end of the day. For me, once the shooting starts in Arma, it gets frustrating, fast.

There was/is a great fear at BI’s development teams of making things too hard/complex for average players, thus you never saw something as “complex” as TKOH2.

TKOH’s modding scene was made difficult by the subject matter not attracting a lot of people in the know as well as BI not documenting the flight model well enough.

Based on the cloud layer, you even have an appropriate ToH draw distance!

Haha…yeah…I was getting really good FPS!

Say I wanted to get back into ArmA. Is arma2 completely succeeded by -3? What are the absolutely neccesary mods and DLC? Say I want some SP (or perhaps later on co-op) open world-ish play… where should I look?

I used to be deep into OFP. Even scripted stuff for it. But my PC didn’t run arma2 well, and I found the pixel hunting, bang-you’re-dead gameplay frustrating.

Can I fly helo’s in VR in arma? I remember trying arma2 in my oculus and it worked out of the box. Is that still in? how is it for -3?

I’m not playing. I’m not helping. I’m not doing it.

(I’ll totally play, definitely help, shall we do it)

Installed it, no mods yet, started on the tutes’, they went fine. Then on to the campaign game. Game is kicking my ass. I’m getting murdered. Man I suck at this infantry thing.

I just added you on steam. Just installing it myself.

I’m about to close it in disgust. My lead is running all the time, but I’m getting winded without even keeping up. The enemy are shooting at least twice as accurate as me, but my bullets do not seem to be going where I aim them. Pretty near to yelling duck this ship and watching netflix.

Irrational anger indeed.

Its better online. The campaign is really difficult until you work out how the AI cheats lol

Guess I was better at that back in the OFP days. I remember having such fun running through a forest being chased by the Russians. A hind passing overhead in dreadful menace.

The audio isn’t helping. When I’m getting shot at, I seem to be getting audio clues in conflicting directions. By the time I have figured out where they’re shooting me from, I’m already ducked.
