Thanks for this, I feel safer being on Steam for my client but my server is at risk as that is a flavor of standalone - although fortunately I have that on it’s own drive.
I put out an everyone mention on the HP discord as this is something critical, even if not every user of standalone will experience it.
For those that don’t always have time to click through and read links as you browse: risk of full drive wipe when running updater.
Looks like the issue only propagates if you manually set the download folder to the drive root. Then DCS isn’t installed in a folder - but “directly” on the drive meaning any other files are sort of “inside” the DCS install and get wiped when the updater does a cleanup. So it shouldn’t affect most users in this case, and a fix will be out with the next patch from what I gathered reading through that thread.
Edit: The fix entails now allowing DCS to install into non-empty directories in the first place, so anything you throw in later would still be at-risk.
I can’t say for certain, the post is dated today but I wasn’t signed in to have the timezone adjusted so it’s possible with the timezone offset that it was already pushed.
I agree. I don’t think DCS needs to worry about FS2020 from a direct competition standpoint with regards to the quality of a combat sim environment. The only thing they really need to worry about (in my opinion) is the leeching away of consumer dollars that are put into consumer’s entertainment bucket. If you have $200 a year to spend on your flight sim hobby, and there is a cool new product on the civil side that prevents you from maybe pulling the trigger on some DCS modules, then you are losing a sale. That should be incentive to make your product more appealing to the limited dollars out there.
Hence my primary reasons to go back to civilian flight are as follows:
Flying propeller based twins in the mountains (FSX, Beechcraft Baron)
Flying large multi-engined jets (FSX, 747)
Flying WWII bombers (FSX, add-ons)
Now with DCS WWII I have some really wonderful prop planes to fly, but something more errrr…civil would be nice. Perhaps a nice community mod as I don’t see a money maker for ED here when talking about the Baron!
As for large planes, toss in a C-130 or C-17 or a tanker and I have one less reason to not be in DCS.
WWII bombers? I suspect that may be just a matter of time - perhaps a lot of time even but eventually.
DCS Syria may well get me into helicopter flying especially with the Mi-24 - and that too would be one that thing I don’t need MSFS for.
A MSFS Mi-24, or F-4E or whatever would, for me, always be a hollow experience, no matter how nice the scenery and weather. Without destruction and threats those machines are only half-alive.
I have never had success with the hand controllers in DCS. I have only tried the Christen Eagle and the Huey. Neither works for me. That was maybe a year ago and I haven’t tried since. But even if it did work it would have very limited utility. So to save battery life I have the gloves turned off in VR settings.
Installing programs to the root directory is SO 1998!
Starting with XP it was discouraged and starting with Vista it became difficult to do, on C: anyway. Other drive letters it wasn’t so tough, but the principle was plain enough.
Added support of new DCS NS 430 Navigation System modules for C-101CC and C-101EB.
Introduced Historical mode filter in the ME.
The historical mode is designed to facilitate the creation of historical mission scenarios. If the author of the mission wants to use equipment only for a given year, he can click on the small button with a clock in the bottom line of the Mission Editor, after which all lists of equipment and aircraft are filtered out for a given year. The lists will show only those aircraft or equipment that were in service with the selected country in a given year. This mode can be turned on and off in the process of creating a mission if you need to select objects outside a given year.
