Are you able to elaborate further on what within DirectX creates the limitations? Or is it just lack of multi-threading as usual?
Just a WAG on my part but, for example: Iâd expect to see the same relative improvement in DCS using Vulkan or DX12 as I have in XP11 with Vulkan.
Basic problem is DX11/OpenGl do a lot of âstuffâ for the dev but those APIâs canât be streamlined like DX12/Vulkan. That streamlining takes extra work for the devâs. Somewhere in the scene graph - things have to be re-written, which trickles up the graph Iâd imagine.
EDIT: Yeah, MT is a big player and I think EDâs current renderer isnât easily re-arranged. I suspect (another WAG) that the previous rendering engine probably would have been easier to port to Vulkan/DX12. Pure speculation on my part.
Did you remember to clear out fxo and metashaders2?
I thought the updater did that itself these days. But I had the skatezilla tool do it as well just now. letâs see.
So usually loading into DCS I see my system take up about 19GB of RAM and then load in assets and other areas as I go.
Syria, I loaded into an F/A-18C cockpit and was already at 28GB/31.9GB of RAM.
Cycling around the map with F11 camera, I came to 31.1/31.9GB of RAM.
Time for 64GB of RAM, already?
This is with all higher end settings, 1080p.
If you are loading DCS from a SSD you should be okay but HDDs will harm your performance a lot with this map as I was seeing terrain data load in off my NVMe drive at over 400MB/s. Peak HDD speeds are 120-180MB/s in ideal conditions, for reference.
Probably has some memory leak or other optimization issues. Doesnât seem right to be using that much. Might explain why some people are experiencing low FPS. You were probably seeing so much drive usage because it was dipping into the page file once the RAM was maxed.
Nope, no paging.
Pagefile is on a separate disk than DCS is.
RAM settled down once I was flying at lowest about 26GB (lower than load in). Blank mission, just me and the Hornet.
Vsync clamps better now. Before it ran like âanything up to 60fpsâ (my monitorâs refresh rate) and now it runs as â60, or 30 if 60 is not doable, sometimes 40.â While the FPS jumps can be a tad noticeable, this is better than the ugliness I see without Vsync - screen tearing.
Budgeting for 30xx series cardâŠ
Im lucky I just started saving my Joystick settings. This update wiped a lot of stuff out. VR performance is down in spite of clearing fxo and metashaders 2 folders (Saved games/DCS open betaâŠ)
I saw good performance on one of the Tomcat missions. But I was only over the desert. It was beatiful. Im on an M.2 SSD.
This @skombijohn, was an absolute desapointment. Especially considering how well they did with missions when the P-47 was released.
No MiG 29/21/15/ and No Mi-8? Uhmmmm No Instant and no Single missions for the map. Guess it will just sit in my SSD taking up space a whileâŠ
I did this. Performance was lacluster with my specs (8700k/32Gig DDR4/2080Ti/M.2 NVME). I can say this with confidence as I was flying the exact B-17 intercept missions the night before and performance was glorious. Perhaps the update moved my VR settings?
The Ai options have been altered and seem nice. Trained and Rookie are not options.
The P-47⊠Fixed the temp gauge, broke the Prop pitch⊠Oye!
Guess that to make a proper omolette you have to crack a few eggs.
I am holding out hope for a mini-patch to fix the patch.
I had a problem with that.
Thinking⊠something⊠I put my pagefile on a fast but still mechanical HDD, while DCS is on my main SSD.
Let me tell you⊠BAD IDEA.
After I put the pagefile on the SSD again all is well.
I have to try with a bigger pagefile on my tertiary SSD.
Pre-NVMe, I kept page file on a tertiary SSD as well, and it worked pretty good considering!
With NVMe, I found itâs okay for C: and the pagefile to coexist as there is enough bandwidth that the little use the pagefile gets (32GB ram) doesnât interfere with Windows, and the same goes the other way.
Games always on a separate disk as most of us do but Iâll add for any casual readers:
If using a single disk with very limited bandwidth, and windows plus the the game have to compete, itâs lose-lose. If windows gets priority, the game slows down. If the game gets priority, windows waits and the whole system slows down. It becomes a three way fight with the page file involved.
The Viggen finally got custom external engine sound
Thatâs great! Now, after I eject, Iâll get the true audio experience as my Viggen plummets into the ground.
Unfortunately, itâs a Stuka dive-bombing sound as used by every Hollywood production that thinks even a Piper Cub with its engine out sounds like that when going downâŠ
So essentially it is the Wilhelm Scream for aircraft.

âŠand this update officially makes DCS too big for my designated SSD to install.
I feel your pain - I literally bought a new drive last week when they finally came down to a reasonable price and am reinstalling a bunch of stuffâŠ
Whoa. My DCS now weighs in at a hefty 255 gigabyte. Just over a quarter terabyte.
While my XP-11 weighs in at almost a TerabyteâŠand for what? If @schuremâs image is meant to illustrate the powerful enjoyment that is DCS World, then XP-11 would be illustrated byâŠ
âŠtomorrow XP-11 will be removals from my hard drive, never to return.
