Did some online flying last night with Einstein. We mainly practiced formation flying, navigation etc. with carrier landings as well. For me it was mainly to get used to the Hornet and how she handles etc.

These five pics are of me taking lead and Einstein flying wing.

Here’s one of Einstein looking at me after I had attempted to do a sharp left hand turn almost virtually killing him.

After maneuvering around, practicing formation flying, changing leads etc., it was time to hit the S-3B Tanker for some go juice. Here is Einstein taking on fuel.

It was my turn after Einstein finished his top off and I actually was able to connect with the tanker and get fuel. I was surprised how stable the Hornet was in terms of being able to make the connection. Was quite pleased with myself being able to take on fuel.

Now one thing happened with the S-3B Tanker, I was not able to top off like Einstein. I had about 2,000 lbs. to go and then the tanker disconnected from me telling me “fueling complete” and it started to fly away. We both were not sure what happened then we began guessing that maybe the tanker’s fuel tanks were empty and it had no more fuel to give me. So if you are mission making, make sure you have many S-3B tankers in the air and I’m actually wondering how many can you put in a mission? How many S-3Bs does a Carrier have during it’s time of use? On blue side, you only have so many names for a tanker aircraft, Overlord, Shell, Arco etc., can you have more than one Overlord in a mission? Some things to think about with mission making. I’m thinking myself that in future missions I make with the Hornet, like if I have 4 Hornets, I perhaps better have 4 S-3Bs in the air, one for each Hornet. I’m talking small missions here. For larger missions I would think I would use the larger tankers but this was the first time I’ve ever used and fueled from an S-3B.

The last few screenshots I took of me flying a mission I’ve been working on with the Mirage-2000C. I just love this little fighter. I was actually able to take on fuel in this bird as well, first time actually for me in the Mirage. It was a good few days of flying. To all the coders out there in the world, you are wizards. Thank you for this magic you produce. To be able to pretend I’m a fighter pilot, learn about take-offs and landings, learn about how to refuel air-2-air, to actually have a reference point from which to understand flying formations and do this via VR or 4K screens is simply amazing and to do it on a personal PC instead of wishing I could afford a real multi-million dollar flight simulator is phenomenal. What a world we live and game in.

The S-3 has actually been out of service for about a decade now officially speaking- we never had them aboard my ship by the time we were operating aircraft (from 2003 onward), and the tanking mission was covered by Superhornets from one of the two squadrons aboard when we started workups and deployment with our air wing. Come to think of it, I don’t remember seeing many of them when we were operating out of NAS North Island, even though that was supposedly their west coast operating base until the type was retired.

However, from what I understand from a guy at my old church who flew the type, there were I believe 6-8 planes in a seagoing squadron in their heyday.

I came across this last summer while trying to have a S-3B pass out fuel to four aircraft; it doesn’t have the gas to fill anything up completely. My estimate that it can pass off about 8,000lbs before it goes bingo, but that depends heavily on how long it’s been flying. F-14s are especially hard on gas, so if you have tanking that needs to be done, use the KC-130. When we get the KC-135R MPRS, you can use it instead.

Generally speaking, use the S-3B to fuel up a short distance from the carrier, then use other tankers later in the mission. You can have a lot of tankers if you’re using late arrival, just means you have to use Overlord 2-1, etc. for them. Otherwise, you can just spawn on the fly after deactivating the old tanker when it hits bingo.

@Hangar200 probably knows more than I do, but tactical tanking is generally used closer to the boat and is used to top off or provide for minor amounts of fuel, not huge amounts. If you need pass large amounts of gas in the air, grab one of the strategic tankers.

Right, the S-3 is either to top off a flight right after launch so they have full range going in or to make sure the planes coming back have enough to attempt landings with bolters/missed approaches, right?

You don’t see them orbiting just behind the front lines.

Good points to remember. One can do pretty amazing things with the mission editor and the AI but they do have their limitations. I need to remember to keep it simple and do just enough to work the “immersion factor” into what units are placed and how they are place thus allowing the players to let their imaginations do the rest.

Navy and Air Force must cooperate then and use the big tankers to gas up large formations. Super Hornets you say? Just used for “topping off” then? I can’t imagine they carried enough gas to really service a large number of aircraft. I’m thinking the S-3Bs must have had the same mission really, just top off those that need it? Then go to the big tankers somewhere along mission route where you really take all you can before hitting the strike area. Again my guess.

More gas than the S-3B in refueling config, actually. 13,000lbs of gas with a 4 wet, 1 buddy pod configuration. I don’t know if they passed internal fuel in addition to external, but if so that’s an additional ~14,000lbs to work with. Depending on how far out the jet needs to fly, potentially passing 16-17,000lbs of fuel out.
