I had a chance to see a P-51 & F-16 do a formation fly by at an air show. I’ve always thought of the F-16 as fairly small but compared to the P-51…wow, it looked huge.
It is!
Compared to other jets it might be small (F-15 and F-14 are ginormous) but compared to old prop fighters it is pretty big. Almost every jet is, except some early ones.
Edit: This is me, so thick-sculled in the morning that I can’t even glean reference to my previous humor. vvv
Actually, the first Eagle Squadron, 71, although activated in Sept during the BoB buildup, didn’t see action as a unit until Jan '41. But three founding members, Shorty Keough, Red Tobin, and Andy Mamedoff had fought with 609 Squadron during the battle. And Art Donahue fought with 64 Squadron.
Sure you do!
You provided picture evidence of it…
Is my humor really so bad I have to explain it…?
The information is missing because there were few reports! The Falcons were busy tipping V1’s over the English Channel, using their superior speed. It was a top secret project, but a leak led the Germans to develop the V2 in order get over this issue.
Which one of them was the one Ben Affleck played?
You guys are killing me Maybe I shouldn’t have given up coffee after all. God’s ADHD med in a cup.
Why would you do something like that…?
Inspired from Grimreapers ”Land on Carrier” competition and somebody mentioning someone trying to do it with the Viggen, I just had to try it.
Never mind that I haven’t finished setting up the controls and opentrack yet. Also I have yet to learn where the airspeed indicator and altimeter is in the cockpit.
It was my first attempt with the mission editor.
Well, if the boat is red and plane is blue, it would be a good idea to make the boat passive. I couldn’t figure out how to do that, so I ended up putting it in as a static object.
My first 2 attempts I hit the drink before reaching the boat.
Third time. Yes! I am going to hit the deck!
Something went wrong! I may have hit the deck to hard. My gears are gone! Ahh! Okay only the left one.
Could that visual glitch be avoided by using the live boat instead?.
All the controls are gone! Hhhhheeeeelllllppppp!.
Heading for the drink.
Is it possible to set the reverser to close without “Weight on wheels”? I had set it to close, but it was only after I had passed the front of the boat, that it closed fully.
Did I have fun? Yes! Very much so.
Will I do it again? Ouh yeah!
Nope, nose wheel has to be compressed to kick in the reverser. So bring that nose down ASAP!
So picture all that but with a regular runway substituting for the carrier…and a big explosion at the end …then, welcome to my life.
In all seriousness. You set the reverser to engage once you have WOW by pulling the lever in the cockpit - the little annunciator above it should come on. With the gear down and AFK engaged, the jet will try to maintain a nice approach speed. Page 102 in the manual (I always RTFM) gives you what the hud symbology looks like for on and off speed conditions (I am more familiar with the latter than I am with the former.)
Anyway…the deal is that with AFK running the throttle until touchdown, you can drop the throttle lever back to idle on your approach and then expeditiously–but not too fast–bring it forward as the wheels hit. That will engage the thrust reversers fairly quickly, maybe fast enough to stop on a carrier.
I’d test it for you but the SwAF has made me promise not to pull stunts like that with a Viggen…any more.
EDIT: pages 66-67 give a good description of AFK … you probably want less than 40% feel and Mode 3 (15.5) for a carrier landing. Also get your nose wheel down quickly.
For every virtual Viggen you damage, I will dress up a Danish Viper and drown it!
And to make sure, we have a virtual Gotland class sub following every virtual US Carrier, in DCS…
I was just lucky that those aircraft were preoccupied with other allied flights which allowed me to get close without being fired upon.
As s a side note, I’ll say it again for those who don’t really get into flying multiplayer. Do yourself a favor and get out to the Hollo Pointe server and get some flying in. Great casual atmosphere and all kinds of fun things to do!
Meh timezones.
Yup, i keep stopping by repeatedly but there’s really not much flying going on @ or around sensible CET times.
Most guys fly when it’s between 3 and 5 in the morning over here.
This.
It’s funny how we all complain but never meet online.
