Ya know for all the craziness going on in the world today, that was the most serene experience I have had in a while - and we all had to worry about being shot, crashing our planes or making a wrong move that disagreed with the plane and would prematurely knock us out.
You know, the Spitfire is a funny bird. When I first got it, I thought it was very much a primadonna on the ground and on take off.
But, once I sorted out the following take off settings:
-Neutral pitch trim
-Starboard trim so that the starboard abbreviation text is in the 3 Oâclock position at least
-Prop pitch to full bite
-Throttle to +8
And itâs a kitten on take off even without the use of a tail-wheel lock. And landing is equally easy provided wings are level and you know when to switch from rudder control to the brakes.
What actually happened is that you âgot gudâ at it. Spitfire is a temperamental lady, with a lot of character. Not one to be trifled with and very intolerant of the sort of hamfistedness some modern planes do well with.
I really hope the different colors for the thermal coatings, casings and guidance kits make it into the accessible portion of the game at some point, without mods. Looks great!
HmmmmâŠI tried a lot of the WWII planes during the Free-to-Fly offer but didnât get a single one. The taxiing was kicking my butt. I guess I could go with my Gladiator joystick (essentially a Fw-190 stick) and use the little throttle axis as the wheelbrake axis; use my X-52 throttle as the throttleâŠget some more buttons out of it⊠Thanks Troll
I donât know about that, maybe I did? I do remember having to dance a lot on the pedals when it first dropped.
It definitely feels like they gave the rudder more authority on the take off run, because I can basically let the stick center moments after applying take off power. Then it becomes almost as familiar as a 172, to me: just a little right rudder pressure to keep it straight.
As for landing, itâs beautiful. Itâs so easy to grease it with a 3-pointer. Then just keep it straight and pump the break gently to maintain heading once the rudder loses that authority.
I really love that these old prop turners make me try harder and demand a bit more out of me. Theyâre great for practice and if you can handle one of these? You can handle anything in DCS.
Iâve perfected operations in almost all of these old birds.
Those roughmets make it look so good. Having such a keen artistic eye for composition also doesnât hurt, nice work @Texac!
Thank you a lot!
I canât go without them anymore, RoughMets make everything so much better.
I made a second version that is more basic as it doesnât come with the Air Superiority paint scheme highlights, so youâre be able to fly the textures with other skins as well.
