It is a pretty good mod…! Has some ways to go…but free is free. And much of the stuff works. Haven’t tried in in VR yet…
This video shows an earlier version of it…a 3D prop that is animated has now been added…among other things:
Man I love the shape of that plane. And I always enjoyed the rather dynamic feeling of trying to land it…always felt one second away from disaster. I couldn’t imagine flying and fighting with it in real IFR conditions (and night)…whew…
Balalaika is one of DCS’ greatest hidden gems. Too bad there isn’t much singleplayer content made for it. I would love to fly it over Syria or the Gulf in a campaign, or even a Red Eagles campaign in Nevada!
I have done full RSBN Box patterns in IFR conditions in the past. It works really well but I’m sure I would need some training to get up to speed again. Key to landing the MiG is to be below 1000L of fuel and fly the numbers per the MiGs flight manual. It really does work.
600km/h gear down, at 500km/h take off flaps, slow down to ~400km/h, full flaps at the outer marker, slow down to about 340km/h, 300-330km/h at threshold, landing at about 260-290km/h (depending on weight). Never go below 80% RPM on the N1 needle until you have weight on wheels.
I remember also making darn sure to have that drogue chute mapped so that you don’t have to take your hands off the stick or look around. That thing really stabilizes you right after touchdown…
Which is why keeping it stowed feels like such an achievement
I only ever use it on very short runways. You can aero brake the MiG quite well and then pump the brakes and it should stop rather quickly.
What I remember from an interview with a MiG-21 pilot on YouTube was that with the upgraded brakes on the MiG-21Bis, the chute was no longer necessary like on earlier models like the F or PF variants where the brakes must have been horrible.
I find this a very difficult thing to achieve without making it sway on its mains till it falls over.
Regarding the braking of the Mig-21Bis, you guys do make sure that the “nosewheel brake lever” is in the horizontal position, correct? Because if you are trying to brake while it is in the vertical position (for taxiing) you don’t get the full stopping potential of the brakes.
It’s available
Here’s a link to the ED forums with the install instructions:
Honestly, the best way to describe the MiG-21 is ‘honest.’ It’s an incredibly honest aircraft. At altitude, it can go slow, but otherwise it loathes the very concept up until 2.1 mach or 1600kmh (which ever comes first). In fact, that solves 90% of the issues you’ll face in the MiG:
Are your landings rough or difficult? Your sink rate is too high, increase your airspeed.
Are your missiles suffering questionable accuracy? You’re launching too slow, launch at a higher speed.
Does it feel mushy and wallow? Why are you breaking 20 degrees AoA in a sustained turn you need to go FASTER.
Did your engine just flameout in level flight? Oh, you’ve exceeded the intake’s capacity for incoming air. You went too fast.
At anyrate, so long as you don’t bust about 3m/s in sink rate, your landing will be just fine. Especially if you’re under 1,000l of fuel usable, you’ll get real easy landings. The Fishbed is a misunderstood bird, it’s really quite easy to fly so long as you just accept that you’re going to be whipping past the fence at 330~ km/h. Don’t fly it like Cessna in bush country and you’ll do just fine.
Even though, you totally can. There’s some nice video of the Fishbed operating off of grass floating around on youtube.
Your post has me so tempted to get this beast.
The MiG is a lot of fun!
I prefer flying the Mig19 but the Mig21 is an intense experience. Its got a visceral feel to it of barely contained power. Plus the sounds and the cockpit are just wonderful. The boom it makes as the Burner lights is unmatched. It’s a special aircraft. Worth every penny
Friends, do you suffer from button pushing, head down in the manual, Grim Reapers YT channel, missile mode, losing lock fatigue? Well, I’m here to give you some glorious furball relief in the form of jets with guns. That’s right Friend, simply download Hunters over the Yalu campaign author Reflected’s MiG Alley mission and prepare to jettison those drop tanks and get your Sabre on. Because it’s too damn old for Satan’s missiles. Can I hear an Amen my brothers and sisters?
