Beautiful screenshots there! I got 5 wallpapers for my computer out of this. Bravo!
Have any aileron lock-up issues? I was hyped to try missions and campaigns like these but had to set them aside because my Saber’s ailerons would lock up at around 0.8~0.85M 25,000ft+ and always when turning left (I think) but never when I turn right.
That sounds about right. I noticed it, but just put out the boards and regained roll authority soon. I also read a post that gun barrel warping is modeled and that the impact points move after a few bursts. Does not prevent one from adjusting aim or reducing range and blasting MiGs. Just something to be aware of.
Yeah the aileron issue is the biggest one for me since I instinctively turn left
It’s been my usual go-to for years in DCS for more reasons than just my bias. For what must seem like a rudimentary light fighter by comparison to the Hornet, Viper, or Jeff, it has a surprising usability and relevance in even modern scenarios. It scrambles lightning fast. You can easily be wheels up by the time Hornets are spooling up their second engine. With AWACS updating you to airborne threats, you can find holes in a hostile airspace or possibly even be in and out before they can start climbing out.
It’s found its own niche in ground attack in that it can enter into airspaces that might have Hawg drivers sweating bullets. Your speed, agility, CCIP rocketry, and barebone flares will allow you to comfortably hit targets that are even socked in with IR SAM threats.
There’s a good reason with the -21 is still relevant for a lot of defense pictures and that’s the performance it offers relative to its operational costs. Used as an auxiliary to more advanced aircraft (think old RAF mixed fighter force doctrine) it can be surprisingly effective in a modern battlespace.
And, the farther back you go in time? It becomes exponentially more effective. The MiG bureau designed an incredible fighter, with even Western analysts and planners admitting it’s one of the best.
As an airplane? It’s an utter joy in DCS. It’s everything you’d have wanted as a boy when you thought of flying a fighter. It’s a very enthusiastic recommendation from me. The claims of it being ‘difficult’ or ‘hard’ as many sources have claimed it to be. As long as you don’t immediately treat it like a 172 on your landings, you’ll find it to be a very easy aircraft to pick up and learn.
Dont get me wrong. MiG21 is my wish fighter in DCS. In fact back when LOMAC was in development I added to the wish list my wish that MiG21 should be included. Never happened.
But we need to be true to ourselves MiG21 was developed as Interceptor. It was adopted as multirole fighter as an afterthought. There are few things that limits it in the modern DCS battlefield. It has limited view from the cockpit, limited RWR functionality, weak radar and no modern weapons like R-73 [we need that Cuban conversion now Magnitude 3 LLC!].
Definitely had a great time in it on BlueFlag servers intercepting Hornets which were attacking our airfields. Or dogfighting Tigers on ColdWar server.
But never had a good time attacking ground targets in it
As a rocket sled, the MiG-21 is pretty killer. Employing rocket pods with the assistance of the ASP is incredibly intuitive and very accurate. If S-8s aren’t given you the punch you want, the S-24 will more than certainly satisfy. It has an acceptable onboard gun for air-to-ground, though not stellar. Taking a pair of UPKs will easily offset that if you feel gunnery is more your preference. I find it also helps to bind the afterburner on/off to a throttle button. Just use full mil on your exit leg, pop the AB if you really need it.
Anyways, rando operations
I am now on the 4th mission from the Kursant campaign. And have a very ambivalent feelings towards the instructor
Holy smokes! That’s a tumbleweed if I ever saw one…
exactly, and we all know what we need! we need IL-2 Battle of Korea! or maybe IL-10 Battle of Korea will be more appropriate
I think this is my first time flying any flight sim since December, at which point I was flying a 727…I haven’t touched DCS in months and the MiG-21 in a very long time.
I touched down Boulder City and did not turn into a fireball of death. I’m going to consider it a successful landing…next time, map the braking chute…
It’s fine, those beefy tires and suspension don’t care where you are going with that thing!
Is Soviet machine, should work on runway of grass or peasant road. Is by design.
