DCS 2.8

Did they say how they were planning to use that in DCS? Sorry if it that has been discussed already, but I am not following DCS closely now.

Thanks @schurem for posting this :+1:

It’s a doozy, innit? Good news on all the core enhancements. I can’t wait to dive into a cloud to break lock on an IR missile and/or sight lines from the ground. That’s going to be good. Multicore processing will open the doors for that.

I will also be building a new PC in the forseeable future, I bet my current CPU (9600K) will beg for mercy!

As for the spherical earth map, afaik they are working on a whole earth map, like MSFS2020 has. Perhaps with the current maps as high-detail areas, or maybe they will be left behind. Who knows.

I think they gave us a good idea of the map pipeline. Regular maps will remain an option especially useful for period specific stuff (and probably worked on a higher Level of detail), and the world map will be an option for a MSFS like experience.

I would bet current maps will work better for low level flying and complicated ground target setups, while the earth map will work great for flying higher up. And still, with so many modern maps in the pipeline, I’d wager the world map is still a long way off. Still, so much of those core enhancements are planned for 2023, I cannot help but to get excited for the future…

Wow!

Note they say ā€œMirage F1 versionsā€, that means not ā€˜just’ the EE with refuelling, INS and proper RWR, but also the BE biplace version.

And I had no idea the C-130 was that close.

Looks like our maps wont be compatible with the new earth map:

Also I would expect the new earth map to look more like X-Plane 11/12 than MSFS.

Saw this from Casmo this evening, seems of interest to the rotorheads of MS: How to sell the DCS CH-47 in ONE easy Step | Digital Combat Simulator 2023 - YouTube

It’s a fun take. But it hardly sounds fun to the Chinook-flying player. What, you land at a nice spot and pump gas for other players until the server rotates? His idea would be terrific for a campaign-type server. And it can be done now, although with crates rather than a single machine.

The Chinook will be fun when soldiers start acting like soldiers in DCS. Or when servers start being serious about logistics. In the best current servers, campaigns move the forward line of troops hundreds of miles in just a week or two. But there is zero requirement to move material from where it was to where it needs to be. Proper logistics needs to be forced into any cooperative progress within the mission. Wanna take that hill? You need a FARP. Wanna FARP? Well pack up and relocate that one a hundred clicks back.

My heart hurts that the Kola map isn’t on that list.

But it is…

Would be nice to see some updates from OrbX on this.

Yea but being it’s their first project in DCS this one might take some time. But being ORBX I bet it will be Well Worth The Wait.

I agree, on both accounts

Honestly Kola is the only map I’m looking forward to at the moment. Something to use the Viggen in. Stoked for the F4U and A-7 as well. I’m not so sure about the world map. If/when it comes out I hope it’s optional. I really don’t like how FS2020 handles streaming of the world map, because then quality/performance is at the whim of your ISP’s bandwidth, and whole-world maps tend to sacrifice a lot of detail. I’ve exclusively played Syria and Channel the last year or so precisely because of the amazing detail they have.

Lack detail? The tech Asobo uses is so impressive because it presents a fairly highly detailed version of the whole world compared to what was possible before only by intalling GB’s worth of mesh files.
Sure, handcrafted maps have even more detail, but the stock world is already of much higher quality than what we used to have in any sim before it.
One of the prime reasons MSFS is as popular as it is, is because of their streaming tech people get the whole planet in glorious detail without needing to invest in super large disks nor countless addons.
And this is not because it presents low poly mountain ranges.

I think you misread @Clutch’s comment.
Without streaming, world maps sacrifice a lot of detail, is what he’s saying.

But, we have yet to see what solution ED decides to go for.

When I did low-level around my home town and Tokyo it lack a lot of detail and seemed…off? I can’t express it well but the autogen foliage and buildings looked very cartoonish, overlayed on top of a satellite image texture, not unlike the low-quality portions on the outer rims of the PG map.

MSFS clearly is impressive, but it’s true that it’s a very well done illusion of photorealism, that can be easily broken. In DCS we see the ground not only as backdrop, but as tactical targets. We zoom in with the TGP, we fly low level. So maybe, a slightly cartoony/artistic approach that makes everything look at least part of a same world (as in DCS right now, even if it’s realistic, it’s still mostly art and representation) would work better than something so specifically made to look amazing in only certain circumstances.

That said, DCS never promised to be MSFS but have a full world map. So how the artwork would work in a full earth DCS is still pretty much unknown… Let’s wait and see what they have in mind. The ability to remain using smaller scale maps seems like a pretty good clue that the earth map will not be able to make them obsolete in a near future.

I aren’t interested as much in the detail/resolution of the scenery in a world map as the why.

This could be to allow users to create a mission or set a dynamic campaign (when it is done) in any part of the world they choose. It could also be a prelude to some long range missions suited to a particular aircraft? The B-52 was featured quite prominently in the 2023 and beyond video

At this point, who knows what ED (or a 3rd party dev) have up their sleeve… I mean the Chinook took everyone by surprise.

I totally missed the tactical aspect of the more detailed, limited maps in DCS. That means I should fly more Apache.
