DCS 2.8

Hooray!! Awesome news for folks like me that need reprojection for smoothness!

That Box is for a .bat script not a EXE Argument extension, it wont work.

The App will save that Text box as a .bat file then run it, sleep for 10 seconds, then run DCS.exe separately on it’s own process start command.

I’ve been doing that (manually adding --force-OpenXR) since they uploaded the update to the update, and running with XRTK Repro (like to boost contrast and some other bits too).

I think the update to the update went by so quick many people missed it. Think it was like the next day, or day after.

the First OB Update that Added OpenXR as primary, had several issues, especially with Modded VR installs (neck saver, OpenComposite etc etc)

The hotfix patch was immediately released to allow users to choose their primary runtime (Oculus, SteamVR, OpenXR, etc).

What headset do you run? I tried that with my Quest 2 and got “unrecognized command” when I tried to run DCS. I had to remove the --force command to get DCS to run again.

Sorry, should’ve said that - G2

I’ve got a Quest Pro and it’s working fine. My shortcut target box looks like this:
“E:\Simulations\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World.openbeta\bin\DCS.exe” --force_enable_vr --force_OpenXR

What’s the coke for??

I will forgive him if it was ‘cheap’ blend. If on the other hand he commited such a heinous crime as doing that to a fine single malt
well, there is a special place in hell reserved for people who do that :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah that must be it. My desktop shortcut defaults to updater rather than DCS.exe itself.

And the Scotch was a cheap blend hah. I used to drink single malts occasionally when I was younger, but I can’t handle the mouth/esophagus/stomach burn of anything stronger than wine any more.

So the fog and cloud effects in the new beta have completely tanked my frame rates. I’ve tried turning stuff down, disabling TacView, and setting SteamVR as my OpenXR executable.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to improve the frame rate?

Remind me, what’s your PC and VR hardware?
Are you forcing vr and openxr in DCS? DCS.exe --force_enable_VR --force_OpenXR
Are you using OpenXR Toolkit?

For starters, I guess I should note I’m running the Steam version.

I use the “Start DCS in Steam VR” option, not sure if I actually have the VR box checked in game but it seemed to work normally prior to the most recent update. (Edit: and does boot into the game in the VR mode post-update).

I’m not forcing anything on the command line.

I don’t have the OpenXR toolkit installed.

Edit:
PC is intel Core i5 11 series, 3060 Ti graphics card, 32GB RAM, nvme drives for systems and games, first generation Windows Mixed Reality headset

I’ve gotta get out of my cave more
what did they change here, with these two?

There seems to be a diffusive fog effect around the ground in a lot of the missions (unless you turn it off in the weather tab in the mission editor).

Also the cloud rendering is totally different - setting clouds to “low” looks like it used to on “ultra” for me, nothing like the old low-fi clouds prior to the update

AFAIK you must force vr and openxr in the command line to get the OpenXR API.
The OpenXR Toolkit lets you run in a lower resolution with upscaling and sharpening.
It also has other nifty features that are well worth looking into.

Just for everyone to know:

--force_enable_vr

Will Launch DCS in VR Mode using the default Runtimes / Interface
(Oculus for Oculus, SteamVR for WinMR etc)

--force_enable_vr --force_steam_VR

Will Launch DCS in VR Mode and Force it to use SteamVR Runtimes / Interface.
Oculus HMDs will launch Oculus then SteamVR Then DCS, WinMR HMDs will go thru their app and SteamVR.

w/ DCS: 2.8.2+

--force_enable_vr --force_OpenXR

Will Launch DCS in VR Mode and Force OpenXR
Oculus HMDs will launch Oculus w/ OpenXR Runtimes, WinMR will Launch their app and OpenXR

Please note the biggest issue with OpenXR, is modded VR installs (If you are forcing OpenXR thru OpenComposite already, VR Neck Saver Etc etc).

At this point you’d have to revert the OpenComposite Switcher off OpenXR, remove the registry entires for OpenComposite to Hook the DCS.exe for the installed path, remove any VR Related Mods (ie NeckSaver).

Run a Clean, Run Repair, then Update, and then force OpenXR Natively.

Then Re-install VR Necksaver, re-calibrate etc.

THAT should be a PSA perhaps in it’s own thread or something? You summed up what took me some fumbling to grok on my own. Thanks!

Just found this YT Channel. Might be handy for mission creators:

Sorry, can you elaborate how to “remove the registry entries for OpenComposite”? I don’t recall I made any changes to Windows registry, if that’s what this is referring to. Thanks!
