Yeah I just tried it out, was getting 21ms frametimes on the ground in the Hornet “Ready on the ramp” instant action mission. No can do. Back to OpenXR, and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for motion reprojection ASAP.
With OpenXR I’ve got acceptable frametimes, and good FPS (45-60, lows of 30 on a full carrier deck during a Dominant Fury alpha-strike style launch). But without Motion Reprojection, moving my head around the cockpit makes the text momentarily blury. Drives me nuts. The sad part is I had it performing great up until now.
The good news is I can turn shadows back on (High, and Terrain Flat Only) with not noticeable performance hit.
I don’t know what I’m doing (understatement of the year) but I’m using OpenXR + Reverb G2 and, via OXRTookKit it’s working; have it set on 30 at the momemt. I am using the switch --force_OpenXR (check the synatax I’m working from memory here - @SkateZilla posted the correct one, and of course it’s in his app).
I thought u were on a G2 also but not sure now, so if not then un-regard. Clicked Update to DCS an before last flight an it was up-to-date.
You’re correct, I’m using a G2 as well. For me, when I attempt to turn on motion reprojection in OpenXR for WMR (so many acronyms!), the game launches, loads the menu, then locks up and crashes immediately.
This also happens if I turn on Reprojection in the OpenXR Toolkit (I had to reset all of my settings to get the game to not crash initially) the next time it restarts (required to apply the MR setting). I’ve tried to go back to OpenXR using the previous opencomposite (so many ‘open’ things!), and while that works, reprojection on causes it to crash using that method as well. So I think I’m stuck for the time being.
ETA: Okay, I went and read some more on the ED forums (weird every time I type that!) and wound up downloading the OpenComposite replacement “openvr_api.dll” and inserting it into DCS’ /bin folder. For whatever reason, the OpenComposite app was not properly picking up DCS and it was launching natively in OpenXR regardless of the runtime I had selected in the applet. I had removed the --force OpenXR parameter from the shortcut, but it wasn’t doing the trick apparently. Wierd!
Now with all that said, I can run OC OpenXR and use MR, but the performance isn’t as good as before. I guess I need to turn shadows back off, lol. Out of curiosity, what does everyone use for their OpenXR resolution in the OpenXR Tools for WMR settings? I’m at 100%, but wondering if I should change it to match native resolution for the G2.
Same here. I am semi convinced that when it comes to G2’s there is an element of Voodoo involved - one day smooth as silk and no issues. Next: nup, not gonna, you can’t make me.
And the only thing that is different is the date???
Have any of you noticed issues with the campaign UI in the latest Open Beta? Yesterday I flew a mission and was stuck on the debriefing screen with no way to save the progress. Also, and this is probably related, when the campaign page is brought up, it doesn’t load each campaigns progress, I first have to switch from My Campaigns to some other page and back.
Yeah, its a bits of a mess: OpenXYZ or Open-Alphabet Soup.
I did sense the FPS (DCS) was lower [than a week or so ago] and along with a confirmation from ED that something was wrong with them on that update, turned them ALL off til this all gets resolved.
The shadows I miss the most are cloud shadows on the ground - just adds even more depth to the scene in VR.
My process after the last, of two in a row, updates to DCS:
Uninstall/reinstall OpenXR - For WMR (from MSFT Store). Kinda by accident - the OpenXYZ thing bit me (and my old, tired, eyes).
Did NOT uninstall WMR though
Deleted the reg entry for OpenComposite
Removed the APPDATA\LOCAL\openvr I think it was folder (coffee hasn’t kicked in).
Did a Repair on my DCS install.
I don’t auto-start Steam at all and thus don’t run SteamVR.
Maybe a better solution for DCS and VR would be if ED could add
The choice of picking your VR Runtime in the system options menu?
This way people who already have OpenXR working and don’t need a runtime forced could choose which option works best? I’m by far no computer expert so not sure if that is even doable?
About the comments above RE: DCS is a beautiful mess.
After the last hotfix I’m back up and running in Oculus runtime and mostly back to normal performance.
I had some time on the road this morning and listened to a podcast about missions over Syria during Inherent Resolve ; and then flew a CAP/CAS sortie from the Cerberus North campaign this afternoon.
For all of the flaws…DCS does give a taste of experiences that I couldn’t have imagined a decade ago.
Agree…I tried to search for an appropriate GIF here; DCS reminds me of a beautiful girl, all disheveled after, well, after a round of mud-wrestling. Yeah, don’t Goggle that
Maybe they are just planning ahead for after Friday Strike Eagle Pre-order so they don’t have to answer When is F-15E Relase??? ….And You know that will start happening 2 minutes after Strike Eagle Preorders Start!!!
The orange arrows point out the relevant bits on making that happen.
Now with the newest version of OpenXR toolkit, you get to turn on turbo mode again or motion reprojection, whatever you like more. All the options work again (on previous versions, they’d crash the sim on loading). Yay!
On my box it runs really fook’n sweet now and it looks better than ever before.
