There are some interesting interactions between critical (stall) AOA in ground effect vs OGE.

In ground effect the aircraft can be flown at a slower airspeed without stalling, but actually stalls at a lower AOA than OGE. Unsure whether this is simulated accurately in DCS, or if so, whether the AOA bracket accurately accounts for that (either in DCS or IRL).

Could also be the DCS AOA bracket isn’t accurately calculating/indicating AOA at higher weights. IRL it’s a calculated AOA (ratio of AOA to stall, with 1.0 being stall) based on aircraft configuration, and so if the AOA computer isn’t properly designed or calibrated it could be off. I imagine there could be a similar discrepancy in the game as well, dunno.

If it makes you feel better (not that you need consolation), I have trouble making nice landings with the Viper too. It doesn’t have a whole lot of pitch authority at landing speeds either, unlike the Hornet.

The jury is still out for me, it may be that I’m srewing up my landings. I did one today where it worked as expected, so either it got fixed at some point, only happens under certain circumstances or it’s a PEBKAC issue.

I can boast about my Viper landings but I’ll have to fly it again and really think about what I’m doing with the stick because it’s subconcious for me. Landing feels a bit faster than in BMS, and I have to be really careful with my landing weight to make sure I can stop before the end of the runway.

there’s definitely that subtle bit of seasoning that each sim has.
I do things in DCS I dont do in BMS and vise versa.

BMS has a very different feel for the worldscale from DCS - which might just be that I’ve tuned my IPD settings in DCS to get the world scale right and haven’t found how to do this in BMS.

But everything seems very small and short in BMS… and there are some gnarly trees right at the end of some of the runways too :flushed:

Thats what i thought.

I can do a demo with the control indicator up if you guys like. Key to landing the Viper in DCS is to come in slightly fast and aerobrake. Pump the brakes once the nose comes down. You can easily stop on even relatively short runways like Ramat David. In my experience it’s better to properly aerobrake instead of slamming it down like a navy jet. Gets you down savely and slows down jkust as well

Landing in BMS is a lot easier for me all around.

Completely unsure which is more ‘realistic’, as I have no context or 1st hand knowledge, so both are completely okay with me.

It’s been years since I flew BMS, but I don’t recall ever having to give her gas in the flare to maintain landing AoA in BMS. In DCS I have to add shot of gas to prevent a tailstrike in the flare.

The landing technique I use basically holds the approach nose angle and uses power to flare… I think this was from the old Pete Bonnani videos … I can’t confirm that but searching online shows me that General Bonnani also wrote the Jetfighter II strategy guide that I owned - I never put it together that it was the same person!

Edit: and using that technique the jets feel very similar

I always had trouble with that technique. I come in at 11deg AoA then flare to 13deg AoA for touchdown. In DCS I need a bit of gas to keep the AoA from exceeding 13, but in BMS I recall it holding steady at idle and aft stick.

I learned how to fly and land the F-16 in F4.0, and it transitioned remarkably well into DCS. I haven’t crashed a single landing…which is more than I can say for the Viggen. :open_mouth:
