DCS 2.8

Yeah! I remember buying a PC gaming magazine, with a accompanying CD, just to get patches for games, when I was on dial-up. Or, when we got cable at work I downloaded patches there and took them home on discs
I don’t miss those days, but I can see why it would be a better solution for some.

You can do that, just put the downloaded files in Program Files\DCS\.downloads and DCS Updater will use them.

Applying them straight to the main folder structure probably works too.

All you need on another pc to download the patches is in your Program Files\DCS\bin folder. You can just copy that over to start downloading

Something to consider is DCS Patch sizes are largely dependent on how many maps and modules you have installed.
What I’ve done in the past when I’ve had low bandwidth is uninstall some modules and maps that I very seldom use before a patch. This cuts down on patch size and time to download.
Then when I have more time I reinstall those modules and run the updater again

Didn’t know that, thought it would need an activated sim. I do still have a second account which I used to run my old server. Hmmm - might be worth looking into.

No authentication on the updater AFAIK. You can download anything you want any time (as users of the Skatezilla tool may know). It’s only when you start the sim that it checks if you are allowed to use the modules.

It’s the never ending battle between backwards compatibility for those with lower end CPUs/GPUs/RAM/bandwidth and making the appearance look better for those who spent heavily for those parts and want to see that reflected in what they get.

Remember all the hubbub about 32/64 bit, or going back farther there was DX9/10, or CD/DVD or digital DL, or Win 7/XP, or even Windows/DOS.

Sure you can keep catering to the can’t/won’t upgrade crowd, but soon enough they’ll find the sales dwindling to the ones who can/will upgrade as their product looks old and outdated and people move on.

One could (I have done, it once by accident),
Use an app, say, launch DCS, play DCS, and alt+tab back to the app, say,
Click update, and let it download a large update, say…

But once it tries to install the files, you’d need to close DCS otherwise you’ll get file locked errors.

So Close DCS, Click Retry, Let it finish, and then re-launch DCS.

IIRC The New Dedicated Server Branches dont need an account either.

They are going to need it if the Chook (Chinook) is going to be in any way realistic

I’m getting something new since the update - in VR, I’m seeing a light grey circle in the cockpit (overlaid) with a pos sign in the centre - and the circle fills in with a deeper shade, rotating clockwise.

This is happening repeatedly for a couple of minutes, then may stop for a while, then kicks off again. It’s rather distracting and it also seem to reset my POV.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it is something in the VR software, outside DCS, as the neutral head position in VR is not controlled by DCS.
If it is with the Pico, I guess it could be either Oculus runtime, Virtual Desktop or Pico software, if I understood that stack correctly.

Does it happen in other games?

No - that’s why I asked in the DCS thread. Only in DCS and only since the update (though Pico just had an update, too, but as I said it’s not in any other Pico VR app).

I’ll try with Quest 2, for some reason Index performs far worse than the wireless headsets now, in flight sims.

I’ve checked through all settings etc on the Pico heaset and there’s nothing amiss - however I have noticed some very strange interaction with Virtual Desktop - so that may well be where the issue lies.
I’m thinking VD probably needs an update after the large Pico one.

For eg when I try to take a screenshot or record a video directly, Virtual Desktop comes up. That shouldn’t happen, so some wires have crossed.

edit - I’ve asked on the VD discord, hopefully will get an answer sometime.

OK - the devs are telling me it was a bug in the Pico software, but Guy (VD) has released a fix for it. So for Pico users, the latest Virtual Desktop beta is required.

edit: Get it at the link below and install using Sidequest (yeah - had no idea Pico 4 could use sidequest):
