Honestly, they should do QnAs like that more often.
A lot of the guys still fly in DCS, Cpt. Smiley, Galinette etc.
From IndiaFoxEchoâs discord:
NOTE ON DCS:F-35 - WE ARE NOT INVOLVED!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++After the surprise announcement of the DCS:F-35 we have received several messages asking if we were involved in the development.
The answer is NO: WE ARE NOT INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT, although years ago we had, of course, discussed to port our MSFS F-35 to DCS.Frankly, to make this a realistic F-35 simulation, it is totally understandable that ED decided to develop this on their own as âfirst partyâ official module, as there are a number of changes/improvements to the simulation core needed to make it work.
However, we have seen a lot of misinformed discussion about the potential ârealismâ that ED can achieve, as they declared it to be a âfull fidelityâ module and weâd like to clarify that we believe they can do an EXCELLENT job in terms of realism: contrary to popular belief, much of the required information on the F-35 air vehicle is publicly available (e.g. academic papers) and there are dozens of videos of cockpit simulators, showing the avionics and the pilot interface in great detail. Moreover, a lot of the official aircraft documentation is UNCLASSIFIED (although it is RESTRICTED).
Long story short, the F-35 is actually better documented than most people think - and it IS better documented than the F-22, and even (to a much lesser extent) than the Eurofighter. There are, however, some critical areas in the development, such as the actual performance of the radar and the sensors (that is CLASSIFIED) and the actual radar cross section (which can be, to some extent, simulated with commercially available tools such as HF-SS or CST).
So, yes, there will be areas in which ED will have to guesstimate some things - so il will not be (OBVIOUSLY) 100% REAL.
But (spoiler) NO SIMULATION IS 100% REAL.Can it break the game balance? Definitely YES.
But that is what the F-35 can do in real life too.
Cool response from IFEâŠ
This bit Iâve always wondered about when it comes to DCS. A lot of the systems we have modeled in DCS are technically restricted arenât they? As in âDistribution Statement C?â Thatâs on pretty much every single pdf manual I uhâŠdonât actually have. I understand thereâs some ITAR shenanigans in the mix too. But if those systems and things are modeled in a game, then that doesnât count as distribution or export and so theyâre legally okay? Iâve always wondered how this works because Iâm fairly certain if I tried to fly a manual explaining the Viperâs CCIP and HOTAS functions into Japan Iâd probably get arrested despite having an exact (from what Iâve compared) copy of that very sytem in DCS on my home computer in Tokyo.
I think that even if you could make the case that the information is widespread and common knowlegde, the item, the physical manual, is still covered by ITAR.
So itâs only the documents themselves that are restricted, not the information therein once replicated in a simulator?
does that then make the DCS manual for the planes restricted as it has the same info
Iâm no expert on ITAR, but the information is also covered. But what I meant was that even if the information wasnât classified, or had been declassified, the physical manual itself could still be covered by ITAR.
Also, if you just downloaded a pdf containing the same info, through normal channels, not hacking into govt. sites, you could probably claim ignorance. Thatâs hard to do with a physical binder that says âProperty of the USAFâ or such.
I doubt the authorities would do anything about that unless they can prove the information was obtained by illegal means.
Iâm guessing ED will document the sources for the information they will use to make the systems in the Battle Penguin, in case someone comes askingâŠ
When LN/HB did the Viggen they requested declassified documents from the Swedish War Archives and got a little more than they asked for as a clerk declassified docs that covered the Rb-15 missile⊠That didnât turn out so good for the clerk.
Wags went on the Mover and Gonky show and got TORN UP over not having an F-35. Wags basically said thereâs no documentation and they canât do a full fidelity. I personally commented (my comment was featured) and told him that was nonsense because they still sell FC3 so even something of that fidelity would sell, compared it to Dino Cattaneos product. You could tell he was getting upset about it all. Point is, I wonder if that episode had anything to do with the decision to do an F-35.
Here is the episode if you want to see it:
that interview was a while ago, things may have changed since then
I still believe they have got a military contract to do at least a cockpit systems/familisation sim⊠the F35 is being exported to everyone and their mothers, so just like the A10 had they are doing a desktop/VR thing for some country or another, then dumbing it down a bit for the home user.
It was said they were collecting data for years before making the decision.
Maybe he knew they were collecting data and trying to get to a point where they could announce it, but was not allowed to say that yet.
Iâve been wondering about that too. There isâor used to be in some casesâLOADS of PDFs that anyone and their grandmother could download from USAF e-pubs or CNATRA. Even some direct links to a NATOPS in Wikipedia. I havenât looked at USAF stuff recently but last year or the year before CNATRA locked down most of their T-45 stuff.

I think outside of some of the radar abilities, RCS, weapon ranges, ECM/ECCM, and perhaps what the FCS will allow in extreme situations, little about the F-35 is really classified.
The US got around some of it by putting abilities in âblack boxesâ that I suppose were set to be difficult to reverse engineer with closed code. ED can do the same thingâthe result is what matters.
I know the ingredients in my meal and I like how it tastes, if Iâm not given the exact quantities of the ingredients, what order they were added to the dish, or how precisely they were cooked, does it matter to me enjoying it?
If the cook actually had no recipe and just ingredients and threw it all together ad hoc but the final result was great, does that mean the meal is âfakeâ?
I guess that depends on whether you are a wannabe 3 star Michelin Chef (when in fact you have no formal culinary training but you do have a copy of Joy of Cooking on your bookshelf).
