DCS 2.9

I mean why stop there, when we could merge all five of them… :joy:

Apparently it’ll cover a fair portion of the Gulf

Oooh, so much room for previous campaigns.

Now we need JFK, Kitty Hawk, Connie, Enterprise, and Charles de Gaulle. And some Coast Guard cutters.

Or, if we turn on the REAL way back machine, there’s a bunch of old cruisers, destroyers, and battleships we’d need.

Clearly the ODS/OIF map and not so much an Iraq-Iran map then…

Looks like a big-un. All I have to say is, “finally”.

At least there is some water on this map, so the people who were quite vocal on the ED forum about no carrier ops on the Afghan map should be happier

Between Syria, Sinai, Iraq, PG and Afghanistan, the major part the middle east and SW Asia that have been flashpoints for the last 80 years will be covered, albeit tilted towards modern times and not historical.
You can do the Six Day War on Sinai but it’s not quite right.

That leaves only Fortunate Son country to be covered.

Still waiting for the first map that is not WW2 and not modern either, but somewhere in the golden age of military aviation, between not being able to lob bombs accurately at all and being reduced to an LGB truck bombing truck, bombing trucks with LGBs.

I’m hoping that if not for the vehicles, ED will at least allow some level of “educated guessing” for the terrains.

I think the closest we’ll get to that in the near future will be the Germany map that looks to be late cold war/early to mid 90ties. On one of the screenshots was a Partnership for Peace banner which was a NATO initiative founded in 1994.

Yeah, I don’t want a Vietnam 2024 map. I would love a Vietnam circa 1970 map, though.

Now Korea I would like the Marianas treatment on…both a 1950 and a 21st century version to cover historical and hypothetical current day. I mean it could be post-1980 too I suppose, but it seems not to be worth the effort there.

And I am going to pre-order the retro Germany map on the first day!

Why must this sim simply refuse to be a game? It isn’t like any of us are boning up for an upcoming F-4 type-rating. We are adults playing with expensive toys. So make it fun. Make up a war THEN make the map and a planeset. Without that content, why would I buy any of this? There’s nothing new or curious or boundary-pushing about a new chunk of terrain. Well yes OK, in the most literal sense, sure. Airplanes and helicopters I will buy ‘til I die. I can “sandbox” the machine enough to get my money’s worth even without extra content. Maps? No thanks. Not without a game to go with the board.

I’m with you … and the fact they haven’t done this does hurt the online engagement IMO.

DCS is a huge sandbox that ED relies on other creators to fill. In the absence of anything compelling (like the singleplayer campaigns created by people like Reflected and so many others that I’m going to leave someone out if I attempt to name any more of them) we’re left looking to our history or our imagination to find a reason to log into a server. Enigma’s Cold War was good because the premise is easy to understand. With the lack of historical background or a story imposed by the game itself, most others servers boil down to
