DCS F-14 Tomcat Launch Impressions MEGATHREAD

? Anybody using VAICOM with DCS? - #31 by chipwich

I’m using it and probably not going back to the Jester menu system, as good as it is. As of yet, AIRIO and the Wheel of Jester can’t run simultaneously. So, if you are married to the wheel, then steer clear of AIRIO. And there are 770 keywords in the VAICOM vocabulary, so if learning a new language (similar context to the in-game menus) doesn’t rock your world, then you probably aren’t a good candidate for switching. Then there’s the frequent updates and importing the new Keywords into VAICOM with each update. Sounds like a massive pain in the arse, am I right?

But once you’ve got it working, is is sooo much better than any menu system. Like what’s better, keying a mic and saying, ā€œChief, ground power on and connect air supply.ā€, or findling through some menus? My keyboard is not exactly convenient, especially flying in VR.

It works really well with other modules, especially when you are in the middle of a furball and need to command your wingman or flight. Talking to ATC much improves that experience.

I haven’t tried either, but it reportedly integrates well with Simple Radio and I’ve read that the JATAC experience kicks ass. Will post some more video when I’m deeper into it.

Yeah when it works it is truly great. But it may be my accent or whatever. It never takes the ā€˜flight, engage bogies’ when it needs to. Or ā€˜Bogey dope’ another important one that it never gets the first try. Irritating. I went back to the menu.

So, I think that part of the process is either going through keyword list in training mode, or finding substitutes for words that you are having trouble with. For instance, I usually use ā€œrioā€ instead of Jester, because every now and then it is interpreted as ā€œgestureā€. I have only to the initial setup training with the Windows Speech Recognition, and not the VAICOM training mode version yet. But I can see where that would be helpful. And. some of the important commands are just beginning to show up in AIRIO. Like over this weekend we got the INS alignment modes.

I hope that Hollywood figures out how to run both the wheel and AIRIO together. Not as a crutch, but let’s say you are in multiplayer and VA acts up. It would be good to have a bailout.

Btw does anyone use the Steam version of Voice Attack?
Is it any different from the normal one?
I have the normal one but I might switch to the Steam version as I play on different PCs so thag would make installing a lot easier.
…I would need to have Steam running though…
…but then I’ll probably use Steam VR in the future so that’s the case anyway.

Alrighty then. New smaller topics encourage more chatting and help new people, so closing this big fella one off as we’ve probably reached our initial launch day impressions already.

Summary: Tomcat good.
