DCS F-16: Would it be Worth Making

Buy the Viper, you will. Yes.

Boys… I’m almost literally in tears.
It’s awesome.

But, yeah, it’ll have to wait some for of sale. Next year.
I really can’t now.

But I’m so glad the virtual theater will be finally be populated by Vipers.
My slow A10 needed some friends above the battlefield.

It’s not my favourite plane. Its not one I’d think about buying without a sale (same as the hornet) . But by god that was an AWESOME video

I had to pull the trigger after watching that… and I AM going to learn this module properly. At least that is what I am telling myself right now.

Hmmm did somebody mention HOTAS integration? So by that the jet will be more like the A-10C than the F-18 in that there will be less mouse clicking required while in flight? Hmmm that may make me go to the 16 over the 18 long term.

It is. SOI, SPI, TMS, DMS is all coming back although the implementation is slightly different. Par example, you’ll be switching MFD pages with the DMS instead of the coolie, which the F-16 doesn’t have. Once you’ve got your profiles, your DED and your master arm set you can completely control the jet and the weapons from the HOTAS ( Only going in air-to-ground mode requires the push of a button on the ICP, you can go into two air-to-air modes, MRM and DF mode from the throttle)

Yes, much more seamless.

After seeing that trailer I’m considering getting new SSD drive dedicated for DCS. Any recommendations? Should I get M.2 NVMe or SATA? It’s all new to me. Last time I built my own PC was a decade ago.

Edit: I just read up about it. Seems like NVMe is the way to go. Way faster. I’m curious if the stutters will vanish after switching from HDD to SSD.

On paper maybe - In fact I was running DCS from an NVME (Samsung 870) but have recently moved it onto a 1 TB Samsung 860 SATA 3 SSD…cant say I notice any difference.

Going from old SATA 3 HDD to either SSD type is an unbelievable speed difference.

Still I opt for the M.2 NVMe, it’s less cluttered inside the case (compared to 2,5inch SSD - no additional cables). I already ordered Adata SSD XPG SX8200 PRO 1TB. Should be enough for DCS and maybe MSFS 2020?

I swear Glowing Amraam could make a video about toilet paper and I would go out and buy whatever brand was shown.

I said I would never pre-order again. Pre-ordered the Viper

For sure… I thought I had seen this… This is all new. WoW!!!

As much as I love the Viper, I’m holding off on buying it until it has what are (in my opinion) its biggest selling points. Other than the HOTAS integration the major things for me are the various HARM modes, A2G radar, and TWS. The Hornet still does not have all of its HARM modes modeled–and it has fewer modes than the Viper–nor does it have A2G radar, nor does it have TWS yet…I’m worried about what functionality the Viper will ā€œshipā€ with.

Agreed - also, i feel like the technical side of SEAD (HARMs, modes, Sidearms etc.) is getting some attention but the other equally important side of it would be the air defences behaviour. I’d really like unpredictable SAM / triple-A, SAM traps, radars flicking on and off, air defences ā€˜talking’ to each other to set up tactics and so on. Get some sneaky Serb mentality programmed into those units. That to me is just as important about the SEAD/DEAD experience…

The way I am looking at it is that I will be paying 20% less, which compensates for the lack of functionality at launch. All things considered, it was inevitable that I would buy it… I mean… F16!!! So, I may as well get my wallet out now and pay a little bit less in the long run. I have no doubt that this will mature into a fantastic module. I’m not at all disappointed with the development pace of the F/A18. I see no reason why the Viper should be any different.

I forgot about the Viper’s HSD page. Threat rings and datalink are a huge feature. Used in conjuction with HARM POS/EOM/PB modes you can make HSD SOI, slew to a threat ring, TMS-up to select as a target waypoint, and let the HARM fly.

With the Hornet’s similar SA page being introduced at a snail’s pace it has me worried about the Viper’s HSD too.

Nice trailer, the bird sure is good looking!
But, I’m not jumping on this Early access stuff no more. When, and if, it ever gets to final release I’ll buy it for sure, but in the meantime I got plenty of stuff to do and learn with the planes already in my hangar.

The thing that prevents me from preordering (or buying in early access) is the (presumably) missing features.

In the Hornet I don’t mind because I dont know it well and learn the plane step by step anyway. So if the features trickle in one after the other I can use that to learn them one by one, the release sequence becoming my training plan.

In the F-16 I know many systems because I have flown the plane in Falcon 4.0 (Original, AF, BMS) and those are reasonable realistic. So I think I will learn it much quicker, which means that missing features will bother me a lot more.

I dont mind if it isn’t 100% complete concerning weapon systems or so, but if it misses basic stuff like navigation modes, a2a radar, a2g radar, and at least aim 7,9,120, dumb bombs, some paveway and some JDAM, then it just isn’t fun for me. Especially if I have to wait years for those features.

Well, I guess this makes me the sucker fanboy. If they make it , I will buy it. I was in high school and a big fan of the lightweight Zero when I heard of the Falcon. Cant wait.

I’ll probably get it about a week before it gets released. Haven’t felt much consternation with unfinished modules in DCS, though I can’t blame those who do.
