Thanks - great info!
I was doing some formation flying off the AI and decided to see what would happen if I put my nose into the notch between the tails…yes, you can break each vertical stab off individually…
Some additional testing of the damage model…this time, tore off my wingman’s left elevator and the impact started his left engine on fire…
Somewhere Erik’s currently doubled over in pain from your formation work. Just sayin’
You are correct of course…but in my defense I’m trying to hit these planes so I can see how they respond. So it is actually a skill to hit them just hard enough…LOL…
After a bit more flying tonight - this is a plane that will be excellent for building up air-to-air refueling skills. It is one of the easiest planes to manage behind the tanker and that nose probe perspective is just really easy to work with.
what was your experience with the Air to Air mode? It seemed some streamers were having problems with radar. Just curious if they didn’t know what they were doing, or does it feel like a few kinks need to be worked out?
Here’s an interesting “uh…that’s interesting” thing. Dump rate exceeds refueling rate. Here I’m plugged in with the fuel dump on… With fuel going in and and fuel going out, I’m losing fuel at a bit more than 10 lbs. per second…
File that under Why Would Anyone Do That Fact #387
And yes…that tanker appears to be intent on landing or something…so I’m just tagging along to see what happens…
It works for things like the gun ranging and when using with the AIM-9. It does not work with the AIM-7. It kind of looks like it’s trying to work…the missile drops, ignites, then starts toward the radar locked target, but a few second later the radar drops lock and the AIM-7 just continues on without tracking anything. I’ve tried it at minimum and medium ranges and I’ve not hit anything with the AIM-7.
Is it just STT? Do they have FLOOD in yet?
Waist catapults are working now…taxied over to it, put the launch bar down, hit U…it connected, requested takeoff from ATC and the JBD went up…
Don’t quote me…but as far as I can see, rudimentary RWS, STT, and ACM modes (that includes GACQ, BST, VACQ…and not sure about WACQ)
EDIT - verified…WACQ too…
If you fire an AIM-7 with no radar lock, what happens?
Probably stating the obvious, but you know that with the AIM-7, you have to keep the bandit inside the big circle in the center of the HUD for it to stay locked. Or do I have that one wrong? Always worked for me anyway.
You want the steering dot inside that circle when you fired. After that all you have to do is keep the bandit within the radar’s maximum scan zone.
That a pretty CF-188 Hornet skin you have there. (creepy Silence of the Lambs thing). Why are the gear down on the tanker? You trying to refuel while they land?
Yeah the discussion earlier today about the Desert Storm F/A-18C MiG kills and the HUD video got me convinced that the AIM-7 is not as bad as advertised. Might be a nod to the radar, but that AIM-7 looked pretty damn lethal.
That’s the Hornet self protection system telling you to stop doing that or you will get burned.
It’s actually what gave the Hornet its name, since a real hornet will sting anyone trying to remove its wings.
