Hmm…well, with no F/A-18 on the near horizon…there really isn’t much for me to do huh…
Well…except learn 100% of the Mirage that I don’t know.
…and the 40% or so of the Black Shark systems I don’t know…
…and about 40% or so of the A-10C systems I don’t know…
…and about 75% of the ABRIS and CDU of the Ka-50 and A-10C…
…and about 70% of the Gazelle that I don’t know…
…and about 70% of the UH-1H that I don’t know…
…and about 90% of the Mi-8 that I don’t know…
…and fly that new A-10C campaign…
…and learn about 75% of the L-39 I don’t know…
…and…were I so inclined…(I’m not)…learn all about those WW2 airplanes that I’m not really interested in…
…and explore NTTR since I’ve barely scratched the surface of it…
…and do all that in VR too…
…not to mention all the stock campaigns that I’ve never finished…
So yeah…no F/A-18 right now really leaves me with nothing to do…
That cockpit picture looks quite… I don’t know, ugly compared to other DCS modules. It seems lightning or depth is lacking, not quite sure but it feels more of a mid 2000’ish texture then a modern virtual cockpit.
The lighting’s flat with no shadows despite a sun that’s low in the sky which makes it look weird. I’d guess that’s intentional to show off the interior though.
The buttons do all look rather 2 dimensional though. Guess that’s where the whole “year left of work” thing comes into play. 'Scuse me I’ll just… I’ll just be over in this corner. Sniffle.
The Hornet represents one of the greatest milestones in DCS. This is going to be a true 4th gen fighter, a multirole capable aircraft, and a carrier bird.
I took a stroll through that thread with Chrome’s translate. That’s not the only delay they spoke of. One that grabbed my attention was the delay of the carriers. I would speculate that we can expect the Hornet to be a land fighter once it reaches open alpha and remain a land fighter for some time. After all, it’s a separate dev team for the Hornet, for Normandy and for the other projects.
And they’ve been working on the Hornet, right? A year delay would indicate something outright disastrous would have transpired.
And, it’s not wise to simply take the word of single post, translated out of a language that’s so dissimilar to English, and taken out of the context of that entire thread.
So, best to simply see what happens.
Worst case: You save money and can get the Holy Viggen.
Nah, the Viggen and the Corsair also have been delayed for a year. Disastrous is not the right word. I would say they’ve underestimated some part of the process.
I would also wager a guess that 2.5 may also have something to do with it. I can only imagine the under the hood changes that will happen with the merged install.
I’m OK with that- the very last thing a student pilot in the FRS does is take the plane out to the boat for carrier quals. Since this is looking to be the must complex bird yet released by ED in terms of systems and capability, I’m cool with having more time to embarrass myself less in navigating, air to air refueling, formation flying, and weapons delivery before I begin totally embarrassing myself on the ramp.
Besides, we can always pretend they’re Swiss, Spanish, Finnish, Aussie, or Canadian Hornets in the meantime.
If it ships with a Swedish cockpit…I might be hard pressed to find the right combo of buttons and levers to bring it out of cold start…but it will be fun trying!
I’ll walk you through it!
Cold start is basically fuel valve to on, engage starter, throttle to detent.
If you have to ask your crewchief to hook up the ground power, he will be mopping the hangar for days!
We had everything up and running by the time the pilot arrived to the line. A huge V6 generator supplying the jet with electrical power and cooling air.
All the pilot had to do was to confirm the load selector switches in the right hand electronics bay, and climb the ladder.
Once the start was initiated the jet was rolling in one minute. It even disconnected groundpower and cooling air, automatically. You had to act fast when the chocks away signal was given!
The screenshots are done in the dev build, lighting and such is being tweaked and tuned, you can have instances where lighting doesnt work at all as they smooth out the bumps, its possible this explains the absence of shadows and flat look.Remember, these are all WIP, we have seen this before with other sneak peeks…
I actually like this sort of post. Its appreciated to know when there is a delay. The F-18 will be on Gen 2 or 3 VR. There are many other modules coming down the pipe. Viggen the Warhawk, the Bo-105… And as Beach pointed out, so many modules, so little time…
Yeah, when I saw that Hornet pit screenshot above,it reminded me a lot of MilViz. They look a bit, I don’t know, gothic or something, in 2D. But in VR, they are amazing. It could be that the F-18C is being developed with VR in mind, and that’s why the screenshot looks the way it does ← my purely amature opinion.
