Cetero senseo intruder necesitas est.

Neatly explains why the Kiev class and that abomination called the YaK-38 Forger existed. An MPA trailing the fleet, calling in the position is a very deadly thing, analogous how the radioman is the most dangerously potent guy in the squad.

True enough. We had discussions about that type of thing. At the end of the day, we only had so many Harpoons. BOL is OK but is a toss up when attacking screened high-value units. You are more likely to hit a couple of FFG or DDG…probably hit them more than once at that…than you are to hit the high value units. So IIRC we wanted a radar picture…which doesn’t guarantee hitting them but gives you better odds.

There is that…and there is also the threat to ASW aircraft hunting subs ahead of the CVBG´s movement. The FORGER has short legs but probably could lash out a bit on a P-3 or S-3 that got too close. It then becomes a question of “honoring the threat”…do we put fighters out to cover the ASW players? (thus reducing the jets available for fleet air defense CAPSTAs) Or do we hold the ASW aircraft back inside AEGIS MEZs? (Thus limiting their ASW effectiveness.) An abomination of a fighter but against a P-3 or S-3…

Not that I thought much about it at the time…young Ensign Hangar200 was more focused on liberty ports and cold beer.

That takes me all the way back to recruit training and our crusty old platoon SGT… “So you think the gun (M-60) is the most powerful weapon at your disposal do you digger?”. Picks up the handset to the PRC-77. “Dropshort this is Gruntipede 11, Fire mission, Over”.

So I have been on vacation in North Norway recently. Here are some comparisons of some holiday impressions with the latest Kola map update:

Thank you, considering the Lofoten are only sat textures right now that’s pretty decent.

I really hope they update the area with decent scenery at some point but I imagine it’s pretty low priority right now.

Would be nice if at some point it was comparable to what we have around Bodø right now

I even found some birch trees!

The lighting of the forests really sticks out like a sore thumb on my settings. Any way to get red of that without a huge performance hit? I am running medium shadows, medium visibility range and flat terrain objects shadows.

I am also getting these really annoying inside-out shadow artifacts on every HAS/bunker on the Kola map. Any way to get rid of those without making the game perform unplayable?

What also gets obvious on my comparison screenshots is that the DCS looks extremely washed out compared to the photos. I set mission time, date and weather to be the same as when the photos were taken, so lighting condition should be similar. Increasing contrast doesn’t really change that much other than making everything just darker.

Turn off flat terrain shadows I think, forests will still stick out a bit but the bugged bunkers should be fixed and the trees should blend a little better

yeah there are settings that improve this quite a bit but they’re not viable in VR

Is terrain shadows somehow linked to the other shadow settings? Default seems to look the same as off for me. My regular shadows are set to Medium. DCS graphic settings are so confusing.

Off:

Flat:

Between Flat and Off, the only difference seems to be the casting of shadows by the close by vegetation. The forests in the distance just look awful. Always have been since the beginning of DCS for me…

Terrain shadows should only be for terrain objects: trees, bunkers, buildings, etc.

Have you tried turning off SSS (Screen Spaced Shadows)?
This used to mess up shadows under clouds for me.

Being in VR, I don’t think I have any of that fancy stuff turned on

Yeah kinda my point, you’ll have to compromise quite a bit for VR. But I do use default shadows because I really don’t like the look of flat shadows. Especially noticeable with mountains where you’ll have tree shadows hanging in the air etc.

Here is how it can look, not ideal but much better imho, and from the air it’s very decent

It’s particularly bad with backlighting:

Here’s with my VR Settings:

Edit: In the sun the trees do stick out a lot compared to having everything cranked up. SSS, SSAO etc are putting in some work when it’s on but it’s really not an option in VR unless you like a slide show
