But wouldn’t that defeat the purpose to have a red low ball if you are unable to see it (in that screenshot the ball isn’t even at its lowest red position yet)? Range doesn’t matter here as we are dealing with angles.
So, I’m not sure I know what EG really means. More specifically, EGIW.
• EG - Eased gun (pulled throttles back to help set the hook for arrestment)
• IW - In the wires
There must be some other subtle meaning. Maybe it’s failing to push the throttles forward on touchdown? I know I forget that sometimes…
Anybody have any advice to take care of the EGIW?
Stand by, I’m about to ramp strike in the name of science. My hypothesis is that the range definitely matters. In others words you could be Red low at 1 mile and be fine because you can correct it. Red low at the ramp is probably dead. Bout to check though!!
Isn’t the IFLOLS platform adjustable in height? I mean, don’t they adjust it for each aircraft type? Maybe it isn’t tuned correctly for the Tomcat? Does it look the same in the Hornet?
I support the notion that the lights should be visible. If you are low, you should see the low ball light…
Ok, so after extreme scientific crashing, you can see the red ball. There is a point though where too low is no ball, just like too high is no ball. Also if you are too far right for lineup, it does become obstructed, but at that point you would have been waved off already.
you can see where being too far right will cause the obstruction. If I was flying down the center line, I’d probably see it better. I know one thing, the wave off lights work now, the whole landing area flashes at night.
I should also add being at the wrong AOA (too fast) would probably contribute.

Well, in the RL if you were flying a low ball at that viewing angle it would sound like the whole world was yelling “Wave Off” in your ears so it probably would not be a problem. From what I have been told (and heard on the LSO circuit) a Red Ball is very, very visible.

I know they have stabilization stuff - I don’t think it adjusts for each aircraft although I could be wrong.
So civilian PAPI lights…if you are standing at ground level a few hundred feet away can you see the lights? I thought you couldn’t. I recall driving the I-8 by KSAN and you can just barely see the PAPI lights - the highway is on the big hill in front of 27 so you are a couple hundred feet above the runway elevation but obviously an aircraft at the same height and place would be impacting the ground. I thought it is the same for the IFLOS.
I do know that standing on deck about 20 ft from it, you cannot see a meatball - too close?
The LSO document in this post, paragraph 4.2.8. Evidently the IFLOLS can be rolled to cater for different hook to eye distances of different aircraft.
Well, yes, you can be below the lights entirely. But you should be able to see the lowest indication before it is obstructed by terrain or structures.
But @Gunnyhighway’s highway tests seem to clear that up.

My understanding is that the mods reliant on the open FC3 files are not working anymore due to new encryption. Anything that is standalone like the A-4 should still be good.

The LSO must have a boner, nice three wire.
I saw that the Tomcat has an option to bind the ball-call to a key in its controls section. I bound this to my HOTAS and that helped immensly as I no longer have to fiddle with comms coming in the groove.
Nice! The Hornet has a binding too. I tied it to the external lights switch on the Warthog throttle. It really makes a difference; settling into the groove is no time to be looking for a button to press.
And I finally got an OK pass. It took fog and a cross wind to get me there, but I’ll take it! Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
I think this might be judged a little bit too harsh for the moment. The one _OK_
pass I got I was quite lucky when settling in the groove and could guide all the way down with just minor DLC controls on the Tomcat. On any approach that I am touching the throttle or am running the auto-throttles I get some form of EG on my grading card and usually never better than a - - - score. I’m also sometimes getting comments that I am slow even when on speed and on AOA. This is especially so when I’m returning to the boat heavy. My guess is that it still needs a little bit of tweaking.
