I finally had time and privacy enough to take the new DUNE in and absolutely loved it. I haven’t read the books, but a big fan of the original film. The book probably justifies my one quibble, that beings seemingly capable of interstellar travel, fight with swords! The dragonflyesque shuttles were amazing.
My home theater setup is pretty austere but today’s standards, 70" 4k display with Dolby 5.1 sound setup. With the lights turned all the way down, and the sound cranked up, the viewing experience was pretty good. I’m also a Hans Zimmer fan so really enjoyed the score, especially this piece. Very powerful.
Really looking forward to the sequel. I’ve got book one on my Audible wish list, but wanted to see the film film first.
I thought the scoring and general soundscape were fantastic. So much so in fact I kinda want to “watch” again with my eyes shut. I haven’t seen the original since my brother dragged me to it when it released. Like all kids at the time, I judged it against Star Wars and it came up short. My brother judged it against the book and it came up short. Looking forward to seeing it again.
Swords - because personal shields invalid ballistic weapons like bullets/arrows/etc, and lasers + shield = bigger than nuclear bomb reaction, annihilating everyone on both sides.
Solution is stabbing weapons and “smart” slow-moving projectiles that are rare, expensive, and tricky to use.
Ok, I started thinking about this last night, after watching it for the 20th time or so…
As someone with a passing knowledge of Fixed and Rotary wing flight controls- the Ornithopters HOTAS makes no freaking sense and it’s bothering me more and more and more…
Most HOTAS are only useful in standard fixed-wing craft. Even a VSTOL plane needs more.
This is more about doing something that looks right to the viewer than making something that could actually work. Ask most directors and they’ll say “who cares how it works? It just needs to look like it does to the audience.”
Two weeks ago I had a student who formerly flew V22s for the USAF. One of his job options before choosing the airline route was to work at Bell on the V280. He spent a day there and talked extensively with one of the test pilots who had little or no fixed-wing experience. The V280 differs from the V22 in that instead of a throttle* (push for power) it has a collective* (pull for power). You’d think a helicopter guy would prefer the latter. But the Bell test guy didn’t. Controls are funny things. As are the humans who manipulate them.
*both are bad terms but I am using them for clarity.
you can imagine what I use in the ‘office’.
but at home in front of the screen I push for power in simulated helos and my brain have no problem with that
I went to see Dune last night, really liked it. I thought the soundscape was good and added to the alien feel.
It’s been a while since I read the book and my Audible subscription was running out of unused point space (I hate how they do that) so bought the first book as an audiobook afterwards
