DiRT Rally 2.0 League - Discussion

Finished up the run Down Under. Just couldn’t get comfortable with the car. The 80 mph earthquake just doesn’t have any oomph. When you hear “over BIG jump” and your wheels never leave the ground…well, yeah. And to make it worse the tiny wheels love ruts. The rest of the car, not so much. The (lack of) power means that once you get some momentum you want to hold on to it like a scared kid to his teddy bear. Bit of a conflict when you get to a turn…

Barreled through a fence in Stage 1. Turned around and tried to go back through the fence (further on) but it rudely kept me out. Ran along side it for probably half a mile trying to find a way back in before the game reset me with a +44 second penalty (ouch!). Second stage got a puncture so lost almost 2 minutes in the first two stages.

Last two stages I started to use the camber more to help the car around corners, which seemed to greatly increase my speed retention. I think I was on the wrong side of the camber a lot initially. Managed to claw back some time, but simply wasn’t enough.

Keets looks to have driven an almost perfect rally. Perhaps Dolores (a.k.a Lancia, still haven’t figured that one out and the Mudspike search engine isn’t helping) was a better choice, as I just couldn’t claw back any time. Regardless, he seemed to run pretty much error free for the whole six stages. Bravo, a deserving win (likely).

Took a recce run in Finland. I think Walter Röhrl sums it up best:

“I don’t like jumps. Because, you know, if I want to fly, I would be a jet pilot, not a racing driver.”

Somewhat fitting given this site’s origins. Regardless, I think Finland is going to be a test of who is bravest/luckiest, as those jumps are truly terrifying.

Halfway through stage 4 in Australia, which felt like the stage of my life, DR2 crashed back to desktop. Going to reboot now and check things out… It’s really hot in my upstairs office. The AC went out a week ago, and it might be too hot to run in VR, even with the ceiling fan on. Feels like 90 F in here now. It’s a really fun rally so far. Stage 2 was a shocker for the Mini though. Not enough travel in those springs and dampers

Fulvia, what rhymes with Fulvia? Stulvia, Hulvia, Mulvia. Drop the i, because I always spell it wrong the first time, and we got Mulva, which was George’s guess for Jerry’s gf’s name that he didn’t know. It rhymes with a female body part… yes this is how my brain actually works.

Dolores is also Latin, Lancia…

I’m on duty. So I wasn’t drinking. Which explains this…

I think I got lucky on a couple of the stages. One where I rolled the car after clipping the bank on a 2 right at such a slow speed I just needed to keep my foot down to carry on.

The other on the last stage as the car finally picked up speed over those jumps I finally got the car airborne but lost the straight line, I think we did 6 pirhouttes, not recommended in VR, but again no damage and I only lost speed.

Bring on the snow. I’ve only driven once in the snow with the Mk II Escort in the career rally, this could be death or glory.

I’m glad that you weren’t because you would have probably won more than 2 stages. You were flying in the little econobox, Roo. You absolutely crushed SS2, which if memory serves, had the massive road erosion. I was hanging on for dear life in that one.

Barring SS5, when I forgot to load my setup after the CTD on SS4, I gradually become enamored with the Mini. I think that the weedeater sounding motor, gives the impression that it is slow. But once you’ve built some momentum, it can get along at a pretty good clip. The stock setup is horrible though, and probably has a lot to do with anyone’s dissatisfaction.

Great rally @keets. You were on another level compared to the rest of us for most of the rally. I thought that you had backed off on SS6 since you had it in the bag, but sounds like you had a close call.

On the technical side, after my reboot, I remembered that I had a little manual fan control utility. I set that on high and didn’t have any trouble afterward. I believe that on my mobo, the cooling fans are controlled by the CPU load, rather than the temperature. So, even though the CPU wasn’t working that hard, the temps were getting high inside the case, most likely the result of the RTX 2080 driving VR. HVAC service coming today or tomorrow regardless.

Unlucky on the reboot @chipwich, you had some good times going.

If this happens we really should just take the fastest time or fastest time + 5 seconds that’s recorded for that stage as a guide as to where you would have finished had the reboot not happened.

It is a mates race after all… :slightly_smiling_face:

Game is on sale again at greenmangaming for those who are interested but didn’t get it before. Check around for better price first. Doesn’t look like goty version is available there.

If you want to race at Finland, you gotta go fast

regardless of how many tires you have. Don’t worry we’ll probably do the Subaru vs Lancer rematch here

Well that will teach me. Funnily enough I went into the trees about 3 trees further round the corner than your departure from the track.

Then 1/4 mile further on a slow rolled again, it’s becoming a theme, and punctured the front left tyre.

I completed the course with three good wheels and was happy with the time.

On the next stage, no repairs, I hit two consecutive sneaky rocks just off the racing line and terminal failure. I do like Finland though, it feels like the rally stages I used to watch as a kid with the Integrale’s. :+1::slightly_smiling_face:

The jumps alone are enough to give terminal failure on your second no tire stage. Somehow I forgot to pack a spare, so I started stage 2 down a tire. Didn’t stray off course too much but the big jump by the house did me in. Maybe I should have done the series with R2’s

Fun Run Aussieland Results

Congrats to @keets for running away a bit with it.
@Roo 2nd and @weaponz248 takes 3rd. (chip probably got screwed over by a power outage so throw yourself into that mix as well)

the difference between 2nd and 5th was only 45 seconds this week, so great job everyone. Enjoy the Easter snow shortly.

Aaaaarrrgh I just totalled my car in stage 10. The first event I cannot finish.

I know it sounds like a cheap excuse but I went off the street in two very distinct spots, in all three stages that contain said spot. The co-driver just says flat instead of six and there is an unmentioned jump that sent me off into some logs and some power line masts.

Very frustrating. Probably a non issue if you know those stages but I don’t.

(And it probably didn’t help that I jumped into this without any training. Driving the slow DS21 before made me too relaxed. )

Yeah @chipwich took at least third. No way I was beating him.

Thanks, but I’ve been thinking about this and while it’s a nice gesture, don’t think that we should get in the habit of adjusting race finishes. Technical glitches happen in sim racing and for the most part are an accepted risk, whether your fault or not. It also lets some guys move a little higher up and keeps them enthusiastic about driving instead of getting beaten every week. Furthermore, it closes the door on any speculation as to the validity of the claim. I know that hanging out at MUDSPIKE holds one to a more gentlemanly standard, but letting the finish stand as driven, leaves absolutely no room for argument. I’d rather just have you raise a mug and say, “Tough break old man. Better luck next time.”

No one was going to catch @keets anyway. He was on a mission.

After crashing out spectacularly in Finland, I’ve just had a play in the snow on stage 1 before calling it a day. Not sure how that time is, but its a benchmark. The car felt a bit like bambi on ice.

Great fun though.
