Also, just as an FYI, here’s what I’ve found for rings with hotspots within about a 150 ly radius of @HavlokUK’s carrier.
I haven’t seen a de facto list, but most of the ones I have buy orders for can be core mined, I think. Certainly I’ve seen cores containing Alexandrite, Musgravite, Serendibite, Monazite, Rhodplumsite, Grandidierite, LTDs, Void Opals, and once I saw a Painite core. I think most of these can also be laser mined but with very low abundance making it impractical. The exceptions are VOs, which I have never seen or heard of being found outside a core, and Painite which can be readily laser mined particularly in overlapping hotspots.
The way hotspots work has been fiddled with in the recent patches, so you may be seeing the effects of this. As I understand it, the hotspot changes the relative abundance of a mineral - the closer to the center the higher the multiplier. However, if the commodity is rare to begin with then even in a hotspot it may still be less abundant than other more common minerals. LTDs in particular are now much harder to find even in overlapping hotspots. A significant proportion of the serious mining player base have stopped trying to mine LTDs altogether, at least until the prices come back up.
Well, crap. Lemme drop off the 60+ tons of tritium I mined (the only hotspot that seemed to work as advertised) and start jumping to that fleet carrier with outfitting.
All that time and money spent on this mining Cutter, and I forgot the Abrasion Blaster (last time I attempted core mining they were bugged and didn’t work for anything).
…so how long were you planning on hanging out in the Rift?
The plan was to move tomorrow across the Rift -, I was thinking of heading straight to the Zurara, or nearby. I can put that off for a day if you like? Then after that 3 - 4 weeks to head back.
Actually, that’s perfect-- I’d say carry on as planned. I’ll be inbound with fuel soon.

Due to technical difficulties FEI PAW will be moving this evening, some time after 21:00 UTC
Ok, I’ve scheduled the last jump for tonight. We didn’t get as far as I planned but hey ho, never mind.
I’m off to bed now. See you guys tomorrow.
I’ve just had a look around the system we’re parked in and there’s a 21 Earth mass 2.3g landable planet just a short hop from the carrier. It’s got some pretty looking canyons too - I’m going in for a closer look
EDIT:
I had a good explore around planet C2 and the nearby planet/moon pair of C1 and C1a, which were in ridiculously close orbit. C1a is far and away the REDDEST planet I’ve landed on so far :
For those looking for mining opportunities, it might be worth checking out SCHEE EAEC TO-R C20-1. Planet 2 has a variety of hotspots including painite, and planet 3 has VO and LTD hotspots.
EDIT :
Blimey, this puts all other expeditions to shame:

NB: We’re a long way from the bubble but I think it’s worth heading back there this weekend, considering the burning stations and imminent community goals. I won’t be able to make the whole trip in one go so will be jumping on and off through Monday and possibly into Tuesday. So if you leave the carrier before we get back to the bubble then you do so at your own risk.
EDIT: FEI PAW has arrived at Lave, where she will be stationed for a little while.
Burning stations? What did I miss?
I’ve been spending very little time on ED lately but I think it’s time for a new mission. I’m going to take a trip up to the newly opened Rakhams Peak next week. For those who haven’t been following Galnet it’s a bar in a small outpost 5000 odd LYs above the galactic plane. Because of the low star density it’s only possible to reach it using a fleet carrier.
So the good ship FEI PAW will be heading up there over the course of next week and will spend the following weekend there before heading back to the bubble. Anyone who wants to hitch a ride is welcome, and should be docked on the carrier by Wednesday 6th January. FEI PAW is currently stationed in YOKUSU and will remain there until departure.
In addition, Rakhams Peak is currently importing liquor at a premium price. Anyone who wants to make some easy credits can sell liquor to the FEI PAW before departure at just under 8K per ton (buy it from the nearby station for around 90 credits per ton). I have placed a buy order for up to 10000 tons and once that’s filled there will be no room for any more. When we get to our destination there may also be some profit in offloading too as long as the market lets me sell at a reasonable price. Please note that there are no large landing pads at Rakhams Peak.
Anyway, I look forward to seeing some good screenshots here from so far above the galactic plane. Fly safe Commanders! o7
PS: Happy New Year
