I totally can agree with that!
Years ago i was THRILLED when I realized I could design my company logo to have all my space ships in “X2: The Threat” bear my company logo! It was SO cool. The huge ships had it painted on them in ridiculous sizes. The one on the biggest transport ship was way bigger than a fighter.
I was so proud each time I saw one of my ~300 ships!
…and when they removed that feature in “X3:Reunion” I was MAD as a… dunno, let’s say it was a “very German kind of mad”.
I love such stuff.

I can see something that actually visually decorates your ship. Naming them just seems rather pointless to me, personally. I mean, I guess if people who target you can see it that’s kinda neat. Other than that it’s really only useful for differentiating between multiples of the same ship in your hangar.
Thing is, I totally agree with you when you say it’s personal. 
But let’s face it, the “Millennium Falcon” would be just another Corellian Transport if it wasn’t for its name. And so the “Serenity” or… you know the “Enterprise”.
Then again- there are countless other ships wihtout name- good thing it’s not mandatory.

Well sure, but you’re comparing “exhibit A” of movies / tv shows to ship #2354346347 in the elite universe.
Like I say, if you see the name when you target others, then it has a purpose. Otherwise you’re just doing it for yourself and that’s just flavour text. No one will ever know but you!
Ah- well you do have a point. I just can’t wait to find out.
But let’s be honest, gamers is a vain bunch of guys.
In case other players can see it I also seriously hope they have a filter in place to prevent very offensive names. I am not pro censorship normally, but I think I would also dislike some names if I saw them.
…but then you aren’t too likely to even meet other players in years of playing Elite so it probably won’t matter. 
It was mentioned that when you create your comander there’s a very strict profanity control. It’s pretty easy to imagine they’re going to use the same for the Ship’s naming.
Still ship scanning could become more fun with naming lol

I have renamed all of my operatives in XCom 2 to the operatives in Rainbow Six.
Not all (yet) but many - Eddie Price, Dieter Weber, Homer Johnston, Jamal Murad, and so on.
I am essentially playing RS inside XCom 2.
