Elite: Dangerous - updates!

For me Odyssey actually revitalized my interest in Elite. Keep in mind I’ve played close to 2,000 hours in Elite/Horizons over 7 or so years, and had dropped off to near zero play.

The last year with Odyssey, I’ve put maybe 100 hours more, I’d guess. It had me engaged with Thargoid activity far more than ever before. And space combat, too. But many of those play sessions were out hunting for exobiologicals on planets.

But I grew a bit tired of it lately. I guess most of that was due to the latest patches’ predominant focus on Thargoid content, and that was never my primary aim as an explorer type. Combat is fatiguing for me, and I often played Elite to relax. Getting my ships ready took hours, and then I’d be stuck for 1+ hours of combat once I got to a war zone. I vividly recall turning Elite off, and feelng tired, drained.

I wish Frontier spent a bit more time on other aspects of the game, like either mining (which has been intermittently broken), or expanding on the exobiological exploration, or even on-foot mission play. (Nearly all the on-foot missions in Odyssey feel like beginner or training missions to me.) Stuff I could actually find some relaxation during play.

At this point, I’m moved on to Starfield. I do realize they are dramatically different games. But in a massive way, Starfield gives me so, so much of the stuff I used to wish was possible in Odyssey. Even the sense of exploration for me is more full and varied, in Starfield.

I’ve read complaints that Starfield is all planet based, with no space exploration. And this makes me question… what exactly are these players wanting with “space” exploration? In Elite, there is nearly ZERO that will be found in “space” while flying around. The only thing to do in space is… GO TO A PLANET. For me, anyway.

But I can’t complain with Elite Odyssey. Even if a player stays away from the focus on Thargoid action, there is much to enjoy.

And I don’t know that Odyssey really cause a player loss. Same thing happened with Horizons. Lots of players I knew didn’t want to buy, weren’t interested in the planets, disliked (hated) the SRV vehicle.

My experience is very similar. My play time had dropped off before Odyssey and although Odyssey missed the mark in a few ways for me it did get me interested in a bit of AX combat and I did enjoy some of the on-foot missions. That all got tired rather quickly though and I haven’t bothered to engineer any of my suits or weapons as I can’t face any more grind.

However, since I took the decision to go back to exploration I’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment out of Odyssey. I find touring the black looking for exobiologicals very relaxing and I keep coming across beautiful sights (in space and planet-side) which is what I always played the game for anyway. And there is just enough variety between exo-biology, planet based materials gathering, mining for Trit and other valuables, and just plain space tourism that so far it has kept me interested.

Also, I really don’t see what the fuss was with the new planet generation algorithm as the planets are now more engaging than they were and provide better sights to see (at least I think so). And I know they have had performance issues but IMHO the new rendering engine is a lot better. The galaxy map UI sucks but I’ve learned to live with it, and I cringe every time I teleport into or out of my ship or SRV, but I’ve also found a way to appreciate the things ED does well.

That’s all just my thoughts, though.

There seems to be a theory that being in the Sol system when update 17 drops woukd be worthwhile? I may even bring FEI PAW back to the bubble next week.

Just saw something about that. I have no clue what’s going on in-game as of late, but I’m going to go ahead and start moving my fleet closer to Earth, and figure out how to get some anti-Thargoid ships built…?

Last time I played, running passengers out of Sol was quite lucrative, so I’m pretty sure that the rest of my ‘fleet’ is in Abe Lincoln Station and I’m only about a dozen jumps away.

Servers are down so I thought I’d provide another instalment of screenshots from the North America Nebulae:

Screenies

Departing for another system:

Approaching an interesting moon:

Onto the next one:

Pretty! I’m gonna head for one of those stripes.

I set down in the light zone before driving over into the dark zone looking for biologicals. It’s an amazing part of ED that what you see is what’s there - if you can see it you can go there and explore!

Here comes the border:

One last look on the way out:

I found a Serendibite overlap - time for some mining!

A quick bathroom break then I head out in Deep Core II for some core mining.

Bingo!

The nebulae make a lovely backdrop.

Another candidate:

Not a bad haul for a couple of hours work:

Inbound to FEI PAW to unload:

These Anaconda’s are huge! You only really get a proper idea of just how big they are when you walk around next to one.

Having a well deserved rest in the bar at the end of the day:

Tune in next week for more spectacular screenshots as CMDR HavlokUK continues his exploration in your favourite space based soap opera:

Back in Elite for a couple of days now, trying something Buur has shared for easy ways to find the thingies needed for engineering suits and weapons, and realizing I still have no clue what I’m doing in the ground stuff, or how to go about it.

I’m having a real problem with Elite and the reinstallation.

I kept my install folder and deleted/uninstalled the Launcher and the user files folders. It says legacy version is ready to go - which is what I use - but it does say an update is available for the current Horizons version. Problem is, it won’t update.

I tried twice, but after 10 minutes in both cases it had done nothing. No info on the update - how big, how long etc etc and zero resource use seen in task manager. If I tried to close it, I would get an “Update in progress” message - even though nothing was happening

However CPU load was less than 1% and nothing on network.

Hard closed it on both occasions, then uninstalled the Launcher, reinstalled and tried again - same result.

Is this a known issue? Looks like I won’t be switching to the current version even if I wanted to.

*I tried running it as admin, too.

I stumbled on this before…
what it happens (but it’s badly communicated to the user) is that if you stop the update and restart it again, it first has to comb through the game files and then starts the update.

My suggestion is - launch it and let it go. It can take quite some time before it finishes.

Yeah I imagined it would - but after 10 minutes zero cpu load on the first time I tried?

Anyway, I just started the file validation and it is actually doing that - so, I’ll see how it goes after.

Cheers

Well blow me! In the time it took to write that reply it had validated and updated the game!
