For clarity, the wireless connection has been iffy on my main pc for a few weeks. Now it wont find any wireless network at all.
What do i need to buy to fix it. I’ve tried troubleshooting it briefly and it say the LAN controller is not functioning? Where would that be bolted?
A lot will depend on your network setup.
Who is your ISP, do you have their native router or your own? If so, what type of network gear do you have?
Do you want to hard wire your PC or WiFi?
Latest WiFi setups would involve swapping out your ISP’s router for a WiFI 6 minimum compliant Router/Access Point and then getting a WiFI 6 usb dongle.
Can i just order a cable and run it like that?
Its on BT and has been for years. The router is pretty old to be fair but its only the main pc giving grief. The work laptops seems fine
If we could talk by voice on discord could be better to throubleshooting this in a more dynamic, interactive and fast way because the answer is not only one.
It can be in your computer side or in the router side we need to isolate the issue-maker.
So other equipments can connect on your router (the same that you tried with your pc) and have wifi network?
You already restarted your router (many times it fixes 90% of the times), the cables on the router are all ok?
The administration panel of your router have internet in their internal test pages (many routers even have ping and trace routes commands to do it)?
all this can sorted out if the issue is in your router or in your pc side.
Manytimes routers died and you need to replace them, also, more rare, the network adapters also died and you need to replace them.
If the router is from your isp, you should to contact them, many times the replacement is free because is their equipment thats faulty, if is a router thats yours you should replace it. About network adapter of your pc, if the issue is in that side (so all other equipments are ok except your pc) and without thinking that can be a virus or malware in your pc. you can replace it with a usb wifi adapter (some are very small and cute and not so costy). if you equip your pc with a new wifi adapter, i recommend you disable the older faulty one, if its internal one, you can disable it on your bios.
As mentioned, test with a cable, we don’t know if the network adapter is correctly configurated, like dns, dhcp, etc etc, as a starting point you can put them as auto, but we don’t know if all your network is built with fixed IP or you have a dhcp server (that many times a router deal with this service).
Try also the command on command line:
ipconfig /flushdns
So as you can see it requires a more interactive throubleshooting because the problem can be in many places and it requires multiple tests and infos in our side to give you a correct fix.
Victor, would it be to ok to ask to press the windows key and then ask for “device manager” and then check under networkadapters to see if anything is showing faulty, inadvertently turned off (it can happen sometimes if some power savings mode goes crazy) or bad drivers?
I misread the thread title and my heart absolutely sank. It was just for a second but ouch.
I’m sorry, I read this threat title too quickly and thought your WIFE died. How relieved I was upon re-reading the title.
Looks that everyone is happy and relief that Victor’s wifi is not working because his wife still alive …
Just get a CAT 5e or CAT 6 ethernet cable and kiss wifi issues goodbye.
Disclaimer: Does not help with wife issues, no matter the category.
Yeah, sorry, this was badly worded. Els is fine! Apart from living with a moron
This would have been more apropos.
Hope you have many years of fun with your new toys.
My heart also skipped a beat yesterday when I misread the thread subject.
Wheels
His wife is far too awesome to die. That’s just impossibru. Unlike wifi, which fook’n sucks as a way of connecting PCs and you should be running a motherloving cat5 cable as we speak, sir.
My landlord put cat7 in every apartment with the optic fibre in 2023, I have an optic fibre router and a 2.5gbit/s switch with cat7 to every room, theoretically I could get 10gbit switch to connect everything but I cheaped out when I bought the switch.
Leave it to ze Germans to do it right properly.
So? You sorted out your wifi issues and fix it?
Geez. His wifi died! Give the man a little space!
Sorry i exist. My bad.
I asked for help, got some great responses and haven’t been near my PC for the whole week to action any of the gratefully received help.
I’m sorry if that has upset you, I’ll happily refrain from asking anything again in future. Feel free to block me if it makes you happier.
I’ll continue existing quietly over here out of view.
I genuinely appreciated all the responses. In case that wasnt clear
You just made me laugh uncontrollably, and I really need to sleep as I have got an early check-in tomorrow. So thanks for that!
How do you picture that, exactly…? You’d be helpless.
That sounds like a another question to me
