Great news re. JSOW - I’ve watched the tutorials pretty much like the recent JDAM in terms of use but…
I create a waypoint, get the JSOW loadout, power on the weapon, wait until RDY, release at the appropriate time, weapon launches flies around the waypoint for a while then ditches…
I have tried multiple times with the same result, it works if I fire it in VIS mode.
At least in the Hornet you always have to enter the altitude for GPS/INS guided weapons otherwise it will either try to hit an imaginary point in the air or in the he ground. Either way, it won’t hit the target. Same in the F-16 if you’re not using the TGP to assign targets
The A-10C has elevation data for the TAD so that’s why you don’t need to enter an elevation on the A-10C
Yes it does. If you create a waypoint without entering an elevation it will default to some value (Might be 0ft ASL, not sure). If you use a waypoint without a specified elevation as the spi for the weapon it shouldn’t hit the target unless you get lucky and the target happens to be at or very close to that altitude
Mission editor sets a default altitude, usually around 6500 ish, I have run numerous ‘missions’ with the GPS guided JDAMS leaving waypoint altitude to default and EVERY time the weapon has made a pinpoint hit on the target. I just set the waypoint altitude as per your advice and ran the mission, I will post the link to the vid - same result…
If that’s the case it is worth a bug report because that is definitely wrong behaviour. I have used JDAMs once with the F-16C and of course used the correct altitude for my waypoint.
Any weapon that relies on GPS/INS guidance needs elevation data to work.
The JSOW behaviour you describe is exactly what happened to a buddy of mine when he used a waypoint with an elevation several thousand ft above ground in the Hornet. They circled the target and didn’t hit.
I’ve just tried several altitude tests, again following your advice, if I set a low altitude waypoint, somewhere between one and three thousand feet it works! Many thanks, it seems quite an omission that neither GR nor Matt Wagnar mentioned the importance of waypoint altitude in their videos. However again, many thanks. The truth is the effectiveness of these bomblets isn’t well modelled in that the damage caused, even to ‘soft’ targets is minimal.
The oscillation problem MUST have been due to the modelling of icing…
Just FYI, to make absolutely sure you hit the target use the actual target elevation, not a point above the target.
The only explanation for your success with waypoint elevation at 6500ft is that that it gives the JDAM enough time to correct the inevitable target overshoot at 6500ft and then plummet down onto the target at close to a 90° impact angle. Should terrain elevation at your target be close to 6000ft then the JDAM should always overshoot. I can not test this until Sunday so you might try that yourself.
Ragnar, the F-16 wasn’t recognizing different steer point altitudes until now. It was corrected in the last patch. If you pay attention, STPs will now show on the correct altitude in the HUD as well.
