something older here
You’re right! I learned something today, the USAF Block 25’s could carry Sparrows on stations 3 & 7 (one missle each), and flew with them in Desert Storm. From F-16.net:
F-16 Installation
F-16 Loadout
On the F-16, AIM-7 Sparrows can be loaded on stations 3 and 7 (1 missile on each station). Other stations have been wired for testing purposes, but never on operational aircraft.
Wasn’t that included in Falcon 3.0?
95% certain no USAF F-16s were capable of Sparrow during Desert Storm (ADFs never went there). Not only is there no evidence of such a thing but according to Lockheed the full up capability was not delivered for the C until 1992.
I’ll certainly yield to your no doubt more complete knowledge, I was just repeating what I read on that page from F-16.net:
“The last (up to now) operational use of the AIM-7 was in operation Desert Storm in 1991. The missile was used extensively by F-15 and F-16 aircraft. At the end of the war 22 Iraqi aircraft and 3 helicopters were downed by a AIM-7 missile.”
If the variant/block that could utilize the Sparrow never went to the sandbox in 1990-91, then probably a good bet that the above didn’t really happen. I don’t have any personal or academic knowledge on the subject, just what I read. Thanks for the correction!
coding in mod teams is hard when you have to guess and do workaround existing engine limitations,
they have the source code, so they have no such problem.
if you look at the AIM-7 engagements for the Iraqi theatre, all the mentions of AIM-7 are under F-15C vs xxxxxxx
Math heavy coding work can still be quite daunting, especially when you have realtime constraints.
I would love to get into BMS one day. Perhaps when I retire. It looks amazing and daunting.
It’s fairly easy to pick up, and if I recall you can make it where you’re not always the flight leader, so you get to play wingman (I think). I’d recommend it for anyone that’s not a VR addict. The atmosphere is awesome, and the AI is great, especially the radio calls. Any system you learn on the Viper readily transfers between BMS and DCS, so that’s a plus.
I don’t think so. My biggest complaint is trying to assign the hotas controls. The “alternate gui” helps a lot. Try that first. But it’s cool. You are in a war, and you know it with f4.
Minding that I’ve not played it in at least 3 years; yes you can be the wingman. Now that you’ve mentioned it, this is another area where DCS is really lacking. In BMS I used to prefer, sometimes, being #2 (or, #3 or #4 even). Brilliant they were not [as lead] but at least mostly predictable. I’ve groused about this area in DCS enough already however…
Have they removed the - my words - ‘cheezy’ radio calls? in the last two versions? I’m just curious as some of them kind of made me roll my eyes. They were amusing - the first 100+ times. It’s kind of like Jester’s humor (DCS F-14): at some point it comes across a bit stale. I’d rather just have the straight-up ‘phraseology’ in the long run. I do applaud HB’s efforts though. What a great piece of sim-art (not just graphically) that is. An instant classic.
Most definitely.
I don’t remember them being cheesy honestly, but I also think Jester is brilliant, so maybe that says more about me than him.
For a sim that came out in ‘98, they’re pretty impressive. I assume they’re the original voiceovers, but I never played the F4 back then, are they?
Latest on 4.36. The BMS team planned for a mid-March release but ran across issues. Perhaps within the next month or two.

And there is a lot more to discover by your own
One of the most consistent joys of this hobby has been to watch the BMS team continue to update this great combat sim. It got me through the first months of COVID. And today it’s all that remains on my system of the genre.
That’s something that makes me think.
I loved Falcon 3.0 because, despite the relative depth, it was kind of immediate.
Falcon 4.0 walked the edge of the realism blade carefully but one could still study it and become proficient relatively fast.
Now?
I mean… This is literally just like DCS now with a better campaign engine and slightly worse graphics…
I thought I’d be more excited for this release but it’s getting more and more work.
I understand realism, but…
Maybe it’s me getting old but I find myself playing more with old MicroProse games than DCS or BMS.
