FLIR of an airplane landing

For the record, I’m fine with thermal cameras being called "FLIR"s. It’s like arguing that a facial tissue is only a kleenex if it’s manufactured by the Kleenex company. There are way more crazy things out there – like people who pull their desktop-mounted collective for power instead of push.

That’s a whole nuther’ level of crazy there…

This man speaks the truth! Power to the pushers!

And yeah, thermal has a wider spectrum of what it can map IIRC.

Close! But the other way around. There are wavelengths in the IR spectrum that are not strongly biased by the temperature of the source, at least for normal temps.

e.g.,

IR camera image, but not thermal.

This is actually a common way that “night vision” cameras work - they detect IR in the shorter waveband that isn’t “thermal”, but is still beyond what the human eye can detect. Typically a strong shortwave IR light source is used as a flashlight, making it seem just like night vision. Home security systems will often have a ring of IR LEDs around the camera housing to serve as this invisible flashlight.

There’s ALWAYS a relevant XKCD.
