Foothold - Kola

One of your screenshots captured it. Heh, I was sick the day they did top gun..

OH HELL YEAH! I nearly forgot about that!

Ok it’s past three o’clock in the morning and I really need to go to bed, but I can chalk another notch in my belt… or however the saying goes.

Captured BerbasenDavidHassleoff after @jenrick neutrralized it and @BeachAV8R renamed it. :stuck_out_tongue:

A very pleasant first day.

Some screens…

Me heading off to the freshly neutralized Waypoint 13 BergBasen

This map is pretty…

I mean, look at this- approaching a FARP up high on a mountaintop.

Lovely view

I’m trying to (re)learn the Harrier. Prince Loki is giving some pointers. His encouraging meows sound very much like his critical ones though… :man_shrugging:t3:

No such thing as not ready, don’t worry about that with us. Hilarity from not knowing what we’re doing is half the point somedays. Totally get the solar concerns though.

Are we doing 24hr servers now? Occasionally I’ll fly with a few people in Germany but it’s always noon-3pm there (7pm-11pm my time), and we’re running out of missions to fly :joy:

I hope your fuel planning was better than mine in the Chinook @komemiute !:zany_face:

Meanwhile. What is the procedure for re-installing a map/terrain from backup?

I copied the backup files to the terrain folder in DCS (C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Mods\terrains) then selected Kola and repair from the launcher (logged in), but it looks like it is re-downloading the map from scratch?

Always has been a 24hr come when you are available server I think. I fly a lot late at night (2-4am -6 zulu) personally.

Loving this map, will be pining for the fjords for sure. :parrot:

Riding the Viper around and really liking how it works so far. Using 120’s after the sparrows feels a bit like cheating, but so far I think I’ve just lucked out on dumb red AI so far. It helps so much in 2 v 1’s (or worse) to not have to merge every time. The 9X with HMCS is a cheat code, so using 9M’s until I start to die a lot more.

@chipwich had a haunted Mi-8 moment tonight (RAM HIM RAM HIM!) so we’re definitely back in business on Foothold. (Chip got the gun kill but it was within spitting distance of the red farp about to flip blue..)

Haven’t died yet, so far so good. Helped with taking Bardufess, @fearlessfrog from smacked the SA-6 with a HARM, and I batted cleanup with mavericks and gun. Fearless took care of a some read air (Su-25’s I think?), and then did some damage with mavericks, including getting a maverick kill on a taxing Mig-29. I gunned his wingman on takeoff, but according to DCS 25mm SAPI doesn’t do much to a MiG on the ground (ironically 2-3 shells in flight will fireball it). Fearless lured the Mig back towards Andoya into Patriot range. I headed back, as I was fully winchester and rearmed and refueled.

@komemiute snagged a pilot then his miniguns cleared out a lurking MANPAD to flip it to neutral. While that was happening, we got another pair of Mig-29’s, and I was able to hit one with a Sidewinder (after ditching my hard bombs), and the AI CAP got the other. @PaulRix put in a C-130’s worth of supplies and we’re off to a good start.

Came back on after dinner and grabbed an Apache for a “short mission” before adulting got in the way. Almost 2 hours later… My wife is a saint for putting up with me sometimes.

Liberated Kvikkjokk, and komemiute got the capture. Kvikkjokk was pretty simple, no air defenses at all, just some T-90’s and BMP-2s were the biggest threats. Radar hellfires solved that problem. While komemiute was enroute with the big helo to capture Kvikkjokk, I continued SE to Jokkmokk. It had an SA-8, which got shot first, and then just some armor and technicals. Again, no major threats.

Glad I went with full fuel on this one a solid 90 minutes in cockpit. Once I landed grabbed the big helo and over to Jokkmokk I went for the capture and upgrade. Overall, pretty productive.

Trying to decide what to use as my main ride for this one. It’s been a long time since the A-10C, but it definitely could be fun.

Speaking of the FARP that wouldn’t die, Skogsbasen(12), @PaulRix and I grabbed Kiowas and did the 50klm sortie bringing APKWS rockets and a couple of Hellfires. We thought we had killed everything, but there were some vehicles that while not shooting at us, needed to be eliminated.

I set my 58 down to see if I could persuade them with an M4. But before I could place the selector on full boogaloo, @jenrick shows up in a Hook door guns blazing. He captures the FARP, kicks a rescued pilot out the door, who looks suspiciously like @BeachAV8R, and leaves the helipad to Paul and I who are both showing less than 200 lbs of fuel left. Excellent teamwork guys.

I believe you need to select Kola for installation, wait a few seconds, then shutdown DCS completely with the download in progress, copy the backup into the Mods\terrains\ folder and restart DCS. With some luck it will detect the backup files and only update the delta since the last update(s).

RGR.

That is the opposite of what I did. I will give it a go.

I think @jenrick should get the MVP medal of the day (maybe the week) for his clean up at Skogsbasen… it was something to watch as he swooped in with his door gunners cleaning up the three remaining vehicles before completing the capture of the FARP. If he hadn’t completed the task, @chipwich and I would have both lost our Kiowas due to lack of fuel. Fun times!

I wanted to capture Kvikkjokk, but I actually only captured BergBasen.
Capturing Kvikkjokk would have easily taken another hour and it was way too late into Sunday morning already…

I think this initial phase require us to create some extra FARPs or FOBs - the distances are a bit much for slow helos.

Now, if we had an Osprey… now that would be fun!

Agree, @jenrick was foundational to the initial conquest.

That definitely would be cool.

@PaulRix is skipping over the part where he shoots down an Mi-28 in the Kiowa with rockets.

Good night tonight. @chipwich and @PaulRix pretty much covered it. I had put the CH-47 down to let them finish cleaning things out, and decided to fire up the APU. Pulled the power levers back to ground idle, and hung out. Fast forward a bit, and it was time to get airborne. It seemed like I needed more power then usual, and wasn’t getting any airspeed in the MFD. If you are sitting there thinking “that dumba@@ forgot the power levers,” you would be correct.

I had almost grabbed a DAP, and tossed a load of zone cargo inside. Lesson learned

After that Paul and I decided to go try and kill another site. While in route a red attack headed to Skogsbasen, and we diverted to see if we could knock down an Mi-28. Paul managed to smack it down with rockets! Though his reward was meager.

Decided a new FARP to advance our Northern flank. Alone, unarmed, and unafraid.

Mainly due to the pair of F-18’s escorting me.

FARP London, is up, and I dropped another 100 ATGM’s in the cargo hold, so should be ready for a good shoot out.

Still at the same number of takes offs and landings, I’m impressed with myself.

You’re really good man.

Latest situation

I’d love to jump in and save that pilot on the FLOT but I am not sure if flying alone is going to put at risk our progress. I still hate the idea of that pilot alone there…
