Foothold - Kola

Yeah that explosion of that S-300 could have knocked me out badly. Just wanted to look cool with fire and explosions around the helicopter…

Beautiful shots of the Hind!

How did you bomb a modern day SAM site in a Mirage F1? What bombs and attack profile did you use? What type of SAMs were active?.

Really hate that I am missing much of this campaign. I wrapped up my schedule at work and immediately headed to the beach with my boys….Spring Break. So they have had me busy as can be the past few days.

No worries Beach. We are not moving at Thunder Run speed anyway  There should be plenty of objectives left to capture when you get free.

Low, fast and cluster munitions. Pretty much mashed that bomb release button and hit the deck as soon as it was done at the target. I started out with Chuck’s attack profile but screwed it up and still got hits. Tried it again in a second sortie and couldn’t hit a single target so I think it was more luck then skill. Saw a 200ft, 200milirad sight depression, and a 550kts speed mentioned on the forums as a better attack profile.

I think the S-300 battery also had no search radar anymore, they may not even have tried to fire at me!

No worries, we’ll just DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!

Silly question perhaps, but has anyone tried to knock SAM sites with the Viggens Thor flying dispenser thingymajigger? I remember a few years ago having a lot of succes launching it from out of range of most SAM sites.

My trusty hind has knocked out the air defences at Kemi Tornio, going to clean up now and hopefully capture it.

Small update, knocked out some more units but now hiding behind some buildings because two flanker flying cowards tried to kill me. They just bombed some civilians so… Tomato tomaato I suppose. Once they are gone I shall continue the onslaught with the chariot of the gods and clear it all out. Should have taken a manpad crew instead of infantry. alas.

EDIT: They did a gun run on me, I underestimated their tenacity and plain heresy.

EDIT2: One of them has been shot down by a dropped manpad team. The other one keeps coming back to hunt me down as soon as I take-off but I can’t bait them close enough. The infantry has moved onto the airfield and keeps attacking anything there, except properly destroying the single ural that is keeping it hostile. Hopefully someone else can fix that mess!

One more update, Kemi Tornio captured, that annoying Flanker decided to F off, never took the bait of the flight I bought for that, but oh well. A 28 that was trying to take-off as I captured it got yeeted into death, and almost crashed into me as it was defying newtonian physics as we know it.

Did a sort to the next point north, no more SAM sites there, just some fun light armour to bomb into oblivion if anyone feels compelled!

Also Tornio needs ammo.

I took the farp north of 20. How do you get Petrovitch to fire? I managed two shots, which he claimed missed by they were close enough to knock the fokker out. But after that I just went guns hot because I couldn’t figure the procedure and couldn’t stand hearing “scanning for targets" one more time.

Anyway, I took it, picked up a bunch of pilots and repaired the farp. Next up, another SA-10. Yay.

Scan for targets, if he sees something lock it, and then he should prepare the next missile. If you are firing in quick succesion it can be a bit of a wait between missiles, sometimes a few seconds longer then other times.

If he has a lock on a target, a missile selected and you press the fire button he will either say Not in Range, Target Obstructed(direction to unobstruct, sometimes) or Missile Launched. Well these are the message on the top right.

It’s kind of twilight on Kola at the moment, quite pretty.

I took a Viper up and threw some HARMs at the WP29 SA-10 but they got shot down and all I did was make it angry. The F-16C is hard to gauge when to take fuel tanks or not, as the north side of the map has some bigger distances so I often have too greedy a mixed load-out and end up going bingo, forcing me to run home.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. - unknown

I spent too many years on BMS before getting into DCS, so my Viper payloads are almost always 2 bags and a centerline jammer.

For the jammer and DCS during a DEAD run I am not sure to set to manual always transmit position 3 or leave it on semi-auto and 1 or 2 auto transmit and then arm it?

Anyone got good experience with the ECM pod and the modern SAMs? I guess it would just increase the time to lock but stuff just burns through it on 3?

Can you turn it up to 11?

Well it took 4 Strike Eagles (I know, I know, too many treats and high digit SAM’s get tummy troubles), but I took out the SA-11 at Kirkines (WP6). Probably would have made sense to practice a CBU toss on a double digit SAM site offline, but hey why not. Also one of those kills was JF-17 that snuck up while I was head down in my radar trying to figure out why the patch map wasn’t generating. There really ought to be a “RADAR OFF” warning…

Anyone know how to cage the HUD so regardless of the 25 knot surface wind it stays centered?

I’ve always employed it manually to prevent getting smacked by HOJ, and my radar goes INOP any time the jammer is transmitting. IIRC it also only has an effective cone-like area extending from the front and rear, so if I’m notching a threat I don’t bother with the jammer.

For a while the 3 modes were all the same but at some point they were updated so I dug through the manual (which I usually hate because it’s rarely consistent, rarely updated, and rarely easy to understand).

Apparently modes 1 and 2 are deception jamming and the CMS knob needs to be placed in SEMI or AUTO. Mode 3 is noise jamming, with CMS knob in MAN. Mode 3 basically standby’s your radar. Mode 1 allows radar use with reduced range, Mode 2 standby’s your radar unless you’re employing AIM120s.

I’ve only messed with Mode 3 up until these updates so I have some experimenting to do.

Yeah I’ve used 3 a little head on and it seems to reduce the time the SA-10 at least locks and launches. On Foothold there’s other SAMs in the area that sometimes kill the HARM so it’s a case of trying to flood it with 4 missiles or take fuel but not both. We have good AWACs so the loss of radar is ok.

For modes 1 and 2 I’ll see how it does with things like SA-8’s. I need to fiddle with the CMS programs as it seems to be super liberal in using C/F when in Auto.

I spent the day, literally, trying to learn the Apache in - a day. I’m not sure that I understand rockets yet, other than you put the thing on the thing and the rockets have a large cone of indifference as to their impact point. I’m probably missing something.

But give Jorge enough Scoobie snacks and he will kill in succession as many things as you have Hellfires for, without pause. It’s pretty dang cool the first time you see him/her run the table. Never mind him be like, “Say hello to my little chain gun.” and then kills everything he sees :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m sure that there is tons more to learn, and I’m not nearly MQ yet. But will give it a go in Foothold asap.
