Foothold - Persian Gulf

I reckon just the server. Maybe the client would need to enable the sim yo write a file locally for the log but otherwise all the scripts and ting run serverside

Like Schurem said it all runs out of a miz. Clients need to do nothing. Serverside is not much work either, but you need to be comfortable enabling unsanitized Lua if you want to be able to save progress between sessions.

Yeah..what @Sryan said - it is just a .miz file that runs on my server box at home. I’ll put the mission up in about an hour or so…call it 1530 Eastern - 2030 UTC. The developer of it (Leka) recommends resetting the server every four hour or so…I’m guessing some performance leaks or something. I’m on call tonight, so there is a chance I get paged in to fly and walk away..but I can leave the server up. I’ll post the details here in a bit.

Cool, I’ll see if @near_blind is on teamspeak - see ya later!

OK..server should be up:

Server Name: KMAS-MUDSPIKE

Password: mudspike71!

I’ll be on the Mudspike Discord voice channel shortly…takes me awhile to get my Quest launched in in game.

If anyone can let me know if they see KMAS-MUDSPIKE in their server list…

Hmm..let me see…my mission is not showing up.

Fun stuff with @fearlessfrog once we figured out some port forwarding items (I think) on my router.

Ground Service to Frog: “How many rockets did you want?”

Frog: “Yes”

Our questions to answer ratio was very lopsided…

Frog was instrumental in preventing an Mi-8 resupply run on Al Ain..so he saved the day!

Meanwhile..I took a hit from a MANPAD while searching for targets at Al Ain. It knocked a few of my systems out..and when it got time to extend the gear for landing back at base..no joy. Emergency extension didn’t work either..so I slid it on. It was actually survivable and repairable.

While the mechanics were turning wrenches on my bird..Frog came back to rearm and refuel..

My next sortie I complained that the clouds were hampering my view…it was actually the windows of the JF-17 fogging up. Hit the defogger button and a few minutes later it had cleared. Simply an amazing module.

As we were looking for targets at Al Ain I realized I could purchase smoke spotting rounds for 20 credits…my eyes were getting weary from zooming the targeting pod around…

With the last of the enemy mopped up..Al Ain went neutral..so I landed back at Al Dhafra and then put myself in a CH-47 out of the FARP at Al Khatim with a squad of troops to turn Al Ain blue.

At one point I was worried an Mi-8 was coming to resupply it…but it must have been going somewhere else. Our insertion went fine..now we just have to get some supplies into it to make it 3/3.

Had a great time with Frog. I’ll put the server back up in about 30 minutes and maybe we can fly a bit more tonight…

My first DCS in like 2 years maybe? VR works really well, amazing stuff. It’s crazy how fast it comes back although still stumbling around with SOIs and TDC depress confusion. Gonna jump in again tonight! Thanks for hosting the game, it’s a fun mission.

@fearlessfrog and I reconnected last night for a couple more hours to push further east of Al Ain into one of the side targets (Fuel Depot). I had ideas that this would be easy..just a few ground targets and we’d be done, but it turned into quite the slog.

First we needed to get Al Ain up to fully operational..so both of us took some logistics supplies in our helicopters and departed the FARP at Al Khatim to make the sort 15 minute ferry flight over to Al Ain. It was great fun exploring the CTLD menus and the other custom parameters of the mission.

Frog flew the Huey and I took the CH-47 and we made quick work of it.

With Al Ain now supplied and operational (but not yet fully stocked!) we changed roles and I got into my trusty JF-17 while Frog fired up a Hornet. We carried some HARMs and SD-10s over towards the fuel depot target on the other side of the mountain range.

Once in the AO I stupidly got fixated on my TGP and trying to find targets and drifted low. We had already taken out most of the radar guided SAMs..but this mission will penalize you for stupidity. I drifted low and took an Igla up the tailpipe…

Though I could have got in a helo and done a CSAR mission..we elected to just keep using fixed-wing to keep blowing things up. I’d find that the limited stores at Al Ain meant I had to adjust my loadout..carrying just one pod of laser rockets and some GBUs…

First order of business on returning back to the area, of course, was to get sweet, sweet revenge on the MANPAD team.

After several trips back and for to Al Ain I was finally Winchester and we were down to the last two targets..the massive refineries. I was low on fuel and just set up an orbit overhead at max fuel conserve and called in smoke markers on the two targets. Frog loaded up his F/A-18 with big dumb bombs and made two trips back and forth to destroy the refineries. We determined that you likely have to drop 2000 lb bombs directly on the point source of the targeting smoke.

I was a little worried about the AWACS calls we were getting..at one point I was certain this guy was coming hot for us..but he eventually turned away…

“We had to destroy the village to save the village…”

On his next trip to the target area Frog did some great “put the thing on the thing” bomb drops and the side mission was complete!

Back at base, reforging U.S. / Canadian relationships… (Uh..we have any Greenlanders on the forum?)… :greenland:

We had an absolute blast. I’ll try to put the server up again this afternoon at some point..but I’m first up night shift tonight..so I’m not sure how that will work out.

It was great fun. Almost like nostalgia getting into those cockpits again and feeling it look familiar but not enough to actually work stuff properly. My struggles with the FLIR pod after trying to matrix download a 10 min tutorial video on x2 speed probably made it worse.

I think I have 3 deaths so far. One was in crashing that Huey trying to rescue my downed pilot self, when my Hornet took a manpad and I sorta dumped flares a bit late, meaning that as my fuel digits went down like a slot machine, I ejected near a FARP. In the Huey I had the throttle bound to an axis that meant increasing collective would reduce engine throttle, meaning it was a glorious up/down flop of death at least (and in full view of the to-be-rescued pilot, which must have been a morale booster).

The 2nd death was when I finally figured out the incantations for the FLIR targeting, and the Hornet was damaged from a previous landing enough to not let me drop ordnance. So annoying to get it all ready, hit the pickle and it just kinda just not do anything after 20 mins of flying. Apparently just silencing the warning horn on the gear (flashing red lever, mild clue) wasn’t enough remedy, and I had landed like a barrel off the Niagara Falls previously. I decided to at that point just gun run an entire fuel depot and couldn’t pull up in time as I sobbed like a mad man.

Can’t remember the 3rd death? It’s really cool how it keeps all stats, makes it feel all more worthwhile for sure.

I’ll put the server up shortly. I have to make some adjustments to the .miz file once I figure out some of them..but for now we’ll roll with it.

  • I think since Leka keeps updating the mission that the new C-130 is in there..for sure the new CH-47 is. I’m not sure if the Anubis C-130 is in there or not..I’d definitely like for it to be since it has the ability to upgrade zones much faster.

  • Weather - I’d like to put some random weather into the .miz so that when we relaunch it each time we might see different things.

  • Time of Day - Each time we restart the server even though the mission state and player statistics are saved in sub-folders, the .miz restarts at the crack of dawn. Only way to change that that I know of is to manually change the time in the .miz file and resave it. The saved mission folders should be intact though..so you don’t lose anything.

Some other things in reading the Foothold instructions document that I find interesting:

You can use CTLD to load units / drop units that are not related to zone capture. So we can load up things like SAM sites and take them and drop them places (for credit costs).

Enemy CAP varies by the amount and type of clients in the server. That is nice for when only a couple of us are playing.

When the “Watch Your Six” radio broadcast is made..a CAP flight is targeting you and they will pursue you until they kill your or you go home. Fun.

You can use the F10 map to place markers and then use the buy syntax to directly request things at that location. For @fearlessfrog and I that might have been faster than ordering smoke on targets the way we did. Here are the syntax for each of those options:

The CH-47 can carry 5 crates for zone supply. Which is nice because it will then give you full zone capability (3/3) + an extra 20 I think of each warehouse supply. I could be wrong on that…but maybe.

Ejecting results in the loss of 75% of your credits for that sortie. Of course, rescuing the pilot will restore that to 100%.

Server will be going up shortly (prior to 0000 UTC)..

Server name: KMAS-Mudspike

Password: mudspike71!

Made just a couple changes - moved the time forward to 11:30AM in the mission since it resets to 6AM each time we restart the server. Also changed the weather to SCATTERED 1. I’d love to do dynamic in the server..but who knows what we’d get. Might make it fun though. We will explore that option later. These are the presets available..

Campaign status is that we have expanded our reach to the east all the way to the Fuel Depot (nevermind the smoke still wafting over from that area…t’was but a scratch..) Next objective is Al Huti. Al Ain may not be fully stocked with weapons..so Al Dhafra makes more sense as a base of operations…or Al Khatim if you are afflicted with rotorcraft desires. I’m not sure what mods the mission actually supports. I apologize if your favorite freeware mod is not in there..I’m working on getting the free C-130 working and I’ll see about the other stuff.

Voice comms will be on the Mudspike Discord if you feel so inclined. I’m on call tonight..so there is a good chance I have to dip out on short notice..

My skills are really coming along. I managed to shoot down a sort of Temu Jaguar looking thing, like a JF-17 or something? It just sat there while my sprayed 120 went maddog - cool! Gonna get so many mission points from that one.

Any idea if airdropping supplies via C-130 works? If I get some time, I’ll hop on and try it out.

Is there a link for that? Can’t do voice comms myself, but listening in would be good.

Hopefully get a chance to get some flying in sometime soon.
