Foothold - Persian Gulf

Over the past four or five years I’ve been living in a bit of a cave when it comes to a lot of the sims we fly. I tend to pick up a module, fly it for a few months, learn some of it..then shelve it and take a break and wash/rinse/repeat a few months later. So I rarely do much more than do the training mission and occasionally some of the module included campaign missions. I have only in passing noticed some of the amazing posts by @smokinhole and @jross about some of the more advanced capabilities of DCS World as it pertains to making for a more immersive experience.

With a little bit of time to kill the past couple of weeks with poor weather dominating the Carolina area, I started poking around and discovered Leka’s Foothold dynamic mission. Apparently it is an upgrade to Dzsebkab’s original Foothold missions. I don’t know much about Foothold other than what I read on the Discord channel:

It sounds intriguing…but I don’t even know if it is possible to “win” the mission as a single-player. Once I get some experience with it, I’ll set-up a Mudspike server on home box and maybe we can tackle a map together. What I think it interesting about it is the wide variety of missions and “quests” I guess that I think have a wide range of appeal and make the sim feel more like a game..which I don’t think is a bad thing. Some of the features:

  1. Dynamic Spawn
  2. Dynamic zone disable to have a better performance.
  3. Mantis aka Skynet on some zones with Scoot’n’shoot, Meaning Shorad aka Sa-15, Sa-8 etc will fire and move.
  4. CTLD. Capture zone with Troops dropped fr om helo. Drop Hawk Site or build a farp with persistence.
  5. Welcome Message upon entering the unit with Wind, active runway, QNH and altimeter.
  6. When zone is captured, you’ll get notified that ATIS is now available for that zone if airfield incase you want to land there.
  7. Balanced AI, both Red cap and red ground units.
  8. Escort for A-10, F15E, Hercules with built in radio menu: “Orbit here”, “setup reacetrack”, “Rejoin” “RTB”, “Patrol ahead”
  9. Custom purchase menu with the usual + Jtac 9 Line.
  10. Ability to destroy bought CAP
  11. AWACS and Tankers will progress
  12. Kneeboard with Cords.
  13. Hotstart available.
  14. Support For Chinook and many more.

Leka updates the missions weekly-ish and apparently they stay compatible. We’ll see about that.

What I DO know, is that my first mission in Foothold - Persian Gulf was a fantastic one that made me appreciate the gameplay value of a mission like this.

Here is the beginning state of the war. “Foothold” implies just having the barest presence on the map. It reminds me somewhat of some of the old EECH campaigns like Taiwan where you start with just a tiny piece of the island. Dynamic spawn slots are available and you can choose to start from I think the carrier, a land base, or a FARP.

My first objective is to head east across the map towards Al Ain with a speedbump in the path at Al Khatim.

Initial start statistics. I’m not sure quite what to do with the credits..but perhaps I’ll figure that out as I go.

Having just “graduated” from JF-17 school…it’s time to put some of that (minimal) knowledge to the test. I figure a good bet is to carry some LD-10 anti-radiation missiles out to the east and try to tamp down some of the (unknown) SAM threat.

Who decided to launch a mission into the rising sun. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: I can’t see a thing…

As we approach Al Khatim we get our first customer..an SA-15 starts emitting so I put the LD-10 in passive mode and fire one off…

Unfortunately my first foray into battle is short lived as another unit lights me up. Pretty sure it was an IR MANPAD perhaps.

Now..here is where the fun really starts. Yes, exchanging a JF-17 for an AA vehicle isn’t a great exchange rate..and I’ll try to do better in the future. BUT..at least I was able to eject…and in this mission, an ejected pilot can be rescued! From the F10 map I give the ejected pilot (uh..me..) a waypoint to start making his way to the west to get a bit further away from the threat area.

The only helicopter I have any recency of experience in is the OH-58D..so I’m going to assume I kicked the CP/G out of it to make room for…myself…

introduce2

So off I go out to the east to rescue myself. Staying low and whipping over the trees and across the villages I could hear an occasional warning on my RWR. Was I going to get targeted? Was an enemy aircraft going to spot me? I don’t know. The tension was real..and it was awesome.

After about 15 minutes of flying..I get a message from..uh..myself (yeah..this is going to be awkward..)..

Pop smoke!

I land and pick myself up..and head back to base at low altitude..

I’m awarded credits earned but I’m not sure why I don’t get credited for the SAM kill. I think the mission does stress actually landing back at base so I’ll have to figure that out.

Anyway..the most fun I’ve had in a DCS mission in a long time. I do realize that I might have to get somewhat adept at a couple other modules in order to fulfill some of the mission tasking such as resupply or landing troops to capture a zone. This is where a dedicated group of Mudspike friends will come in handy. I’ll keep you posted on when that might happen.

Good stuff.

Mechanically, single player-wise, there are simialrities to DEPLOYED (my rendition). DCS being a sandbox is both good and bad. The good is you can get what you want (within the limits of the underlying ‘operating system’ that is DCS) if willing to put in the time to build it all. The bad - you have to build it all.

As for game play: you, the user, are not the center of the universe. There is no ‘score’ really: you have a job. Do your job.

You can derive your ‘score’ with an honest evaluation of how you Aviated, Navigated, Commuincated (there are limits on that last one - the biggest sticking point coding it) - and of course hit your target or eliminate Bad Guys that pose a threat to the Good Guys you’re assigned to protect.

It does resmeble MSFT FS/X-Plane in that:

  • There is a world to travel within
  • There are things going on in that world such as ground/air units and audio (I have to put them there)
  • You have a destination - a task: Go here, do this, RTB.
  • You have a wingman (AI of course) that you can use (as bait or another set of eyes or just because nobody flies solo IRL)
  • You must survive
  • A few mouse-clicks and you are in the cockpit - this is for those that want to fly more than fiddle with things.

There is a score buried down deep but it is a simplification used to drive the strategy more than anything else.

Am currenlty re-writing the Air Support AI (plus comms with them). It is surprisingly difficult. Or not unsurpising. ED has been quiet (or I haven’t had time to look) about the improvments already in place for AI. Still some odd behaviours but I onty notice when viewing in external (F2) mode, something I don’t do when playing it.

What is the best helo to do base captures in missions that use CTLD (that utility is part of Foothold)..? I assume the payware Chinook can carry the most? I own the Mi-8 and Huey of course…but all I need is a reason to buy the Chinook.

It’s hard to go wrong with the Chinook. Intriguing systems depth, but easy enough to do basic tasks without getting over your head. Can haul enough troops and weapons to swing a battle, well armed, and fast enough to make Apache pilots whine. Thick skinned against small arms. Ugly as sin, but fly her a while and she starts to become the girl that you should have married. Long service history and storied combat record.

I was having a hard time keeping up with a pair of them the other night in the Afghan mountains flying escort in an AH-6J. Enough to wonder who was escorting who.

As I seem to recall Chinook’s are faster than the Black Hawks too.

Chinooks after faster then most helicopters thanks to it’s twin rotor design. There’s an advantage to that!

Damn..I’ll bet that map is cool with regards to terrain..

Right on.

The original YT videos by 47Driver are a great start, but a lot has changed since he last uploaded. In particular the use of the almighty Thrust Grip. It’s kind of like a “smart” collective. And the pedals are kind of like “smart” pedals. And don’t ask me about those steerable tail wheels.

But like the Matrix, they need to be experienced to understand them. The system will seem way too insulting to your intelligence and inner Little Bird, until one day you have a mind melding with the great beast and begin doing things with it that will make sense. It’s a very unique rotorcraft experience.

About that collective, err Thrust Grip. Under the Special tab, you can set it up to behave like a collective. But with a November update, it can be configured like a Thrust Grip, requiring you to press a button before moving it. It will make more sense to leave it as a collective, but I recommend at least trying to fly her as designed, to better understand what the Chinook engineers aiming for. She be different.

This is an important post to read. I had to read it like 5 x to understand it. I guess that need the Marine (Audible) version.

Snow days are awesome. Like a kid in a candy store. Got nothing better to do than sit around and eat and drink and play games. So..back into the breach…

All eyes still on Al Khatim..which has been softened up..but still has units defending it. It is pretty cool to zoom in with the targeting pod and see a cluster of artillery lobbing shells at (presumably) friendly troops. It took it personally and vowed to take them out first…

The BRM-1 laser guided rockets (APKWS-ish) are my new favorite. You can carry a bunch of them in two pods and they are effective out to about 6.5nm depending on your speed and altitude. A great loadout is one BRM-1 pod and a pair of SD-10 missiles until the area is sanitized of radar guided SAMs, then you can load up on two of the rocket pods.

Of interest though was the attempts by RED forces to reinforce the FARP with supply drops. This is a pretty cool feature and I was getting AWACS reports of the inbound Mi-8. I locked him up and pursued him..but I don’t know the heat seeking missiles of the JF-17 very well and I couldn’t get a lock on him.

Unfortunately..in my pursuit of the Mi-8 I crossed over into lethal range for the enemy AA fire and took a few rounds that knocked out my engine. I considered ejecting..but knew that getting to this location to retrieve the pilot would be near impossible with the nearby AA guns. Thus..instead…

Back into the battle once again I was determined to take Al Khatim…

Yet another Mi-8 is saddling up to come drop supplies…this one is accompanied by a pair of MiG-29s that have been specifically sent to target me. I can’t win against MiG-29s (hell..I can’t win against Mi-8s)…so do the tried and true technique of luring the enemy into range of the home base defenses at Al Dhafra. Seeing the arcing missile trails of BLUE SAMs coming up made me so happy..

Unfortunately my dance with the MiG-29s burned up all my fuel and I had to set back down at base. This allowed the Mi-8 to dart in and drop a single resupply crate which populated a handful of units.

I headed back over and took two pods of laser rockets and cleaned house…I’m starting to get the hang of the targeting pod and some of the weaponry…

With the last of the units mopped up.. Al Khatim was up for grabs and it was a race to claim it..!

I knew the OH-58 wouldn’t be able to do enough heavy lifting. I briefly explored using the Hind and the Mi-8..but I haven’t flown them in forever. If I was going to start using a heavy lift helicopter..it might as well be THE heavy lift helicopter. I haven’t used CTLD before so I managed to find the proper menu…load a platoon in my newly acquired Chinook..and headed for Al Khatim.

I barely did any of the tutorials this afternoon..so I have no idea what I’m doing in the Chinook. But I know how to point it in one direction and take-off and land in it. Which is all you need in the heat of the moment…

The first domino has fallen!

Once the base is occupied, you have to fortify it. The mission generated an AI UH-60 to carry some supplies to the base. I waited for it to arrive before shutting down the campaign for the evening.

Tomorrow we will finish resupplying Al Khatim before setting our sights further east towards the airbase at Al Ain. I’ll also have to look into what/if I should purchase some additional defensive SAM sites as we expand east. It sure is nice to have an umbrella to fall back to when you suck at A2A stuff.

very cool! Is logistics and capturing only for helos or can I swoop in with my C-130 or drop some paratroopers over the place? When I have some time to myself (probably never) I will also try foothold.

From what I understand… yes you can air drop supplies from either the C-130 mod or the official C-130.

I’ll start to explore those CH-47 controls as intended. Sounds like a pretty cool system.

I did find this on the DCS forum..that should help make my short logistics flights a bit easier..

If you ever managed to get the KA-50 to fly in the right direction the thrust grip update is a child’s play in comparison. At the moment it gives you barometric altitude hold and the ability to beep trim safely all the way to touchdown (and climb if for some reason you want to be above the safety of terra firma). When the rest of the modes are added we’ll have heading hold, attitude hold, track following, hover hold and more modes all running through it.

I think it [AFG] is up there with the best, overall[1]. It’s pretty good down low and really good higher up. And BIG. ‘I like BIG map’s and I cannot lie’ (if they have sufficient details down low, accurate or not).

[1] I don’t own the Germany map yet. Perhaps the 104 might push me to buy it…but what map do I remove to make space is the next question? I have them dispersed over multiple drives (a redirect) already

Still trying to figure out this logistics thing. I didn’t contribute much to the reinforcement of Al Khatim because apparently I was loading my helicopter wrong. You have to do the load/unload via the Ground/Arming menu and not through CTLD. Fortunately the AI tasked an additional two helicopter supply flights to bring Al Khatim to fully functional.

I did find it interesting that on my way to Al Khatim I passed over a small village and someone took a few pot shots at me with an AK. I heard some plink plinks of rounds hitting but luckily nothing vital was hit.

Passing an AI CH-47 on the way to resupply the base…

The FARP is up and fully operational…and stocked with supplies to some point…

Next up is Al Ain..which I think is more important than the Al Huti area…and obviously it is time to go after the two EWR sites north and east of Al Ain…

So if this was used in Multiplayer, would they need to install it as well I guess? Asking for a friend
