I’m more into endurance racing now, but I can really appreciate the creative talent and attention to detail that went into this model. It’s amazing how far VRC has brought AC.
It has more to do with F1 disappearing from free-to-air TV ages ago but I was beginning to loose interest even back then and haven’t watched a race since - I think the last F1 season that I watched was the second of the current era turbo cars. Even Piastri killing it in his McLaren this year hasn’t been enough to entice me back.
The limited footage that I have seen recently, the cars all look the same, the racing is ‘sterile’ and the politics of the sport annoy me.
LMH, LMDh and GT racing is where it is at for me as well.
A buddy got free tickets to COTA for F1 probably 7-10 years ago, and to say I was excited was an understatement. I was so incredibly underwhelmed to basically watch high speed parade laps for 2+ hours. The Ferrari Challenge race that led off the day was great at least.
So I was also starting to lose interest though right now I’m Team Piastri and sitting on the edge of my seat hoping he can pull it off…
The level of ridiculousness in the sport at the moment is best illustrated by the fact we’re meant to care about which tyre compound is painted with a red, yellow or white stripe this week. I am unable to care about that.
But I do care about Verstappen trying to stay at the front of the grid despite Red Bull hemorrhaging engineering talent but not being able to get rid of the handsy leadership… Hamilton moving to Ferrari and the question of can he come to grip with the car before his career times out… Alonso still somehow making the worst career moves while still arguably being the most technically skilled driver on the grid… Leclerc and his continuing fight with whomever does strategy at Ferrari (they did right by him for once in Spain)…
I guess I am in it for the long game and the people involved - these newer cars along with the big changes in the grid over the past couple of years have made that hard but you never know when the year is going to be another 2003/2008/2010/2012 or even 2021 again…
I don’t know. It’s technically impressive what they achieved with this mod. The subject matter itself is nothing I’m interested in. I don’t want to program electrical motor behavior for each corner or switch mappings during a race. It’s the same reason I don’t want to fly airliners and spent 15 mins of programming an FMC or do a fully fledged flight plan.
I’m happy to admit that I like to simulate the exciting aspects of the subject. E.g. wheel to wheel racing in a Lotus 49 from the sixties. The illusion of trying to control the beast, not struggling with a computer is what I strive for.
