Epic said it was 20 GB iirc.
SoaSE seemed to be heavily inspired by Homeworld, from what I remember playing it. I imagine if you liked it, you’d love HW as well.
Remember, this is Homeworld one and two Remastered/modernized, and then it also has Homeworld One and Two original versions as well, for the collectors, enthusiasts and purists.
Also!!
“HomeworldRM” is the correct folder: For this patch:
Example C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\HomeworldRemasterdCollecti\HomeworldRM
Also a very devoted developer is creating the third.
One wonders if any movie will ever depict that armor. Even the Starship Troopers movies decided it would be too expensive to even try.
if you like that style of art, have you looked in to Chris Foss, he does some amazing starship paintings, and was originally commissioned to do initial concept art for Alien, an unreleased Dune film and the original Superman film
They have, but it was ‘animated’. CGI was really well done… for 2012.
There was an era when spacheships were often illustrated as bright, colorful and even shapely, which then gradually shaded to mostly white, in still largely science-positive depictions, that have now become the sort of utilitarian, even brutal grey vessels of modern sci-fi.
I wonder if that says anything about how we now view the future?
Sometimes when I see a cruise ship or three docked, I imagine if humanity were constructing starships on that scale. Pleasure/touring starships. With all the fancy windows and detailing, and Mickey waving, painted right on the starship.
A glossy white and red Star Destroyer with Mickey Mouse painted on it. “Empress of the Stars”.
For everyone who loved Homeworld I and II next week on Epic Game Sttore there will be the recently developed pre-quel Desert of Karrack!

Really really worth a look!
I remember watching the pre-release videos and eagerly awaiting this. I seem to remember it was delayed, almost vaporware by the time it actually came out.
I am here to absolutely throw my weight behind the idea of playing Homeworld. It was the game that made me fall in love with PC gaming back in 2001 when I got my first computer.
I remember like it was yesterday, I thought the game looked incredible in PC Gamer back in '99 when it was new, but I never had a machine that could run it. I got the GOTY edition with my new computer and not only did I find it was every bit as good as the magazine said it was, it convinced a 15 year old me that games were art.
The use of music, the story, the use of color, the designs of the ships, everything about it is immaculate. It genuinely moved me at a time when that puffed up teenage machismo takes over. And the score, the score is unbeatable. The use of Agnus Dei set to Adagio for Strings will stick with you for the rest of your days. The opening scene of watching the camera pan over the mothership with it playing filled a 15 year old me with awe and gave you this feeling of hope and amazement.
Every inch of it is memorable, from launching over Kharak, to the Gardens of Kadesh, everything.
I think the remaster kind of bungles the balance of fighters vs. capital ships, but as long as it preserves the story.
If that does it for you, GoG has the sequel which is criminally underrated: Homeworld Cataclysm. Where Relic proved itself to be an excellent developer, Barking Dog studios would go on to demonstrate they knew how to expand upon ideas. These guys made another criminally underrated game, Global Operations, which I played the crap out of. So, what makes Cataclysm so great?
Well, when was the last time you played an RTS that was unsettling and even scary? Yeah, Cataclysm is a horror RTS title. It sets up and adapts horror tropes perfectly; no longer are you commanding the cutting edge fleet of the first game, you’re a leading a fleet of deep space miners. Your own political faction is pretty low on the ladder, you represent an auxiliary force at best, and you should play it too.
Homeworld and Cataclysm both demonstrate outstanding storytelling in games. I need to play Deserts of Kharak soon. The Remastered games left me cold since I’d not trust Gearbox to offer respect to a game like Homeworld so long as that greaseball Randy is at the helm, but maybe this new and original direction works. Homeworld was the first to perfect 3D fleet action and then went on to successfully meld strategy and horror, so it’s really a series of experimentation and new things.
I’d still immensely encourage trying the remasters simply because apparently mods fix the Gearbox jank and the story alone is incredible. It’s so worth it.
I think it’s probably just a replication of our combat aircraft or air force marking and paint schemes of the day. Used to be quite colourful, then depended on the role of the aircraft, and today the vast majority are dull grey.
My main issue with Cataclysm was:
Fighting the beast was basically a boss battle. It just didn’t seem to jive with the rest of the HW gameplay. I enjoyed the story, just thought that could have been hanlded better.t
Deserts of Kharak is thematically and if you’re into the HW mythos a great story, gameplay wise it’s a middling RTS to be honest. If you knew nothing of the HW mythos, it probably would be a pass for most people. For that price you can get it currently though, definitely worth the cost to get the story.
That’s strange - I could swear Payday 2 VR has been free for ages. ![]()
Maybe that’s just with a certain headset or other purchase…
It’s the day!

Deser of Kharak is free!
I finally broke down and bought the Homeworld Remastered bundle. It’s as fun as I remembered. Having to remember to think 3-dimensionally is tough, but the game is awesome.
