I have now!
Might be fun to do a Viggen Road Base fly-in… I’m not sure how that would work though…might have to make it where you have to fly out to it because I don’t know if you can spawn in on roads (?)…
Sounds like a plan, combine it with a convoy hunt
…I…did the same thing on my first landing in a couple of years. I KNOW I hit HOTAS switch for it on my throttle base, so maybe it was a bug?
(Sorry @Troll)
I’d forgotten what a photogenic beauty she is.
And on further review, maybe it’s not the landings that are so hard, so much as keeping her straight on the runway. My brake axis settings may be a touch overly sensitive as well.
(there may have been a ground loop very shortly after this picture was taken)
I finally worked out how to use the radios thanks to Chucks guide.
I once came across a kneeboard insert with all the codes for the flight computer. If anyone comes across it please post its link Thanks
From harsh experience, I have found the following procedure works well with landing a Viggen.
- When you are cleared to land and they tell you to “check gear”, also check the Thrust Revere handle.
- When you get weight on wheels, bring it back to idle and then smoothly forward. Do not touch the brakes and don’t go into AB.
At this point you should be slowing down. A good way to tell if you are slowing downs if the needle on your air speed indicator is decreasing (moving counter clockwise).
If in fact you are not slowing down, then you are almost certainly doing something called “speeding up”…going faster…accelerating…increasing your ∆ distance rate…getting to the next time-place spatial reference point earlier than anticipated…creating a greater blue shift from objects that appear stationary relative to yourself, etc.
If this is the case, go to step 3.
-
Keep the throttle going up - put it in burner and take off.
-
Once airborne, check that pesky Reverse Thrust handle.
In all seriousness, if flown properly, this beast does not like to slow down. The Thrust Reverser will slow it nicely. Also, it is possible to land it without using the TR. However, once you put thrust back on the jet, the likelihood of it stopping on the asphalt/concrete decreases.
The impulse may be to idle the thrust…fight that impulse for it only leads to sad tidings and unfortunate outcomes.
That just doesn’t get old!
Gods, it looks absolutely freaking gorgeous.
I like it!
I forgot this was the couple of days when the Spitfire is the demo, Viggen will be on a brief hiatus while I try that one out.
On the subject of landing the Viggen (please note these are not approved procedures just how I do it):
I basically treat a combat landing just like a carrier landing. Positively get all 3 gear on the pavement. Soon as they’re down, advance to full throttle again to be able to take off again if needed (or if you forgot to arm the thrust reverser). With the thrust reverser armed, it will activate, you’ll immediately start to slow, and can then add brakes to keep her centered on the runway.
Plan of attack after trying out the Spitfire is to get back in the saddle with ELINT as my capstone practice exercise (no one shooting at me) will require it for the initial fix for the first target.
Oh my Viggen kryptonite right there. Definitely need some practice on road landings.
Lastly if anyone has any suggestions on proper pull up angle, altitude, offset angle, etc for popup attacks, I’m all ears. I’ve always just kind of eyeballed it. Flying combat sims since the early 90’s, I’m decent at it, but I know there’s a better way then just SWAG’ing it every time.
As if this COVID19 pandemia wasn’t bad enough…!
I too had to jump into the tutorials since it had been sooooo long since I flew the Viggen. I did apply Timka’s beautiful Swedish AF skin…and the Devrim’s English cockpit (sorry purists…)
I don’t know what any of this stuff does…but I did follow along and got the engine started. Then it was on to the taxi tutorial…
I diligently followed the HUMVEE around the base…toyed with reverse…and generally tried to not run into anything…
To most planes this looks like a narrow taxiway…to the Viggen, it kinda looks like a nice runway!
My cornering in the Viggen is waaaaay better than my cornering in Dirt Rally…
That’s one helluva skin!
Very nice skin indeed
I wonder what it looks like on fire (he asks rhetorically…)
Stares in malicious Swedish ancestry
Just needs “Mudspike Low Level Deliveries” written on the side
No worries!
SAAB would’ve translated that cockpit into elvish, if it would’ve meant a foreign sales opportunity.
