On balance I’m sort of in the ‘it is worth it’ camp, but for my primary usage it is a bit of side step as the resolution is pretty much the same as the 3 year old unit and I don’t have a 4090 to do the compression side for it to be flawless. The edge to edge clarity makes it worth it, but like I said above, I do spend some time reading detail stuff in the center so that is a bit of a concern. I want it to be an upgrade in resolution after all this time, not be just as good. Everything else will be better though.
Nearly all of that $500 is for a computer to wear on my head that I don’t really want, and the irony that its battery/chipset is better now so it can be almost as good as a DisplayPort cable is pretty funny.
The wildcard is more if it’s worth waiting a bit longer for a better choice, but then that’s tech stuff.
If only we ever had the answer to that question…
I’m considering the Q3 for those AR games. It looks like a lot of fun and I think this can be the future for sims too. My dream setup is a physical cockpit with the external view ”projected” behind it.
I like how personal this all is. And I love how sensible those kinds of discussion are brought up over here.
I see you all describing how VR is working for you with, sometimes similar equipment as my 3080ti / Reverb G2 Combo. And while I’m absolutely convinced I’m listening to very well qualified opinions and testimonials, for me, VR is not mature enough for me to have fun with it. I can’t get performance good enough with graphics good enough for me to even bother. With the Reverb G2, it was both performance and the sweet spot. I’m glad the sweet spot limitation is getting solved, and I’m optimistic that maybe the 4090 has made the performance finally on par with my expectations of what DCS VR should be.
So I read all of this looking at a bright future ahead. Maybe when I upgrade to a 5xxx series card I’ll try VR again with DCS 3.x, and a Quest 4…
For now, by the look of the early reviews, I’ll stick to watching you guys have fun with it!
Since several of you (and me) are talking AR and the standalone features of the headset, I think it is only right to point out the limitations (which surprised me, honestly). It is no powerhouse. Even their mild UI “apartment in the sky” environment skips a bit. META Horizons, their social media “world” is, in terms of visuals, quite low quality by even by 20 year old PC standards. Yet it still skips at times. Might be wifi latency on my end of course. But I am certain there is no way in Hades something even as low tech as VTOLVR could run on it, at even half the detail. Watch the video of Asgard’s Wrath 2 (which will be free with the headset). It’s pretty basic. And even though it is an ad, the video stutters in spots. I am not trying to poo-poo this amazing new toy that has taken over my house. I obviously find it faultless. But the enthusiasm might lead others into expected more than can be delivered today for the money.
I’ll give one more insight that has occurred to me in the few hours of playing shooters and VR games (so far):
This is the first headset where I haven’t had to be picky about how it fit onto my face, adjusting to get the perfect ‘sweet spot’. That doesn’t seem to be a factor with the Q3: it just looks good no matter how I’ve got it positioned. Crazy to consider coming from the G2 where it has to be ‘juuuust right’ for it to be clear as possible.
His resistance is weakening. We made need to bring in the Master Bad Influencer to close this one while he still clings to the top of the fence, albeit now on the good side. Oh @PaulRix!
Dan, I can’t, in all good conscious, do any bad influencing unless I have also purchased the item in question . I have a feeling a Q3 is in my not-too-distant future but I really want a new mount for my astro-imaging rig, so my Reverb G2 will have to keep soldiering on for awhile. Besides, I know how Chris (@BeachAV8R ) rolls… I don’t know if I can cope with him looking at the box for three weeks without opening it… I am still traumatized from the wait we had to endure when he purchased the Rift CV1.
Still experimenting with the Quest 3. Love the augmented reality, passthrough, hand tracking and full screen sweet spot.
Graphics quality is the same, on average, as my G2. Frame rate and smoothing is slightly better than the G2. Head tracking is better. Does have very slight screen door effect. Might only be noticeable if you move from a headset with G2 or better resolution.
It takes a little more effort to get it to ‘hook’ to DCS (likely just lack of familiarity), and I can’t get it to charge during use, despite being plugged into a powered USB port. Was only getting about 1.5 hours of use before the low battery warnings started to pop.
So far, I’d say it’s not worth upgrading if you have a G2 and just sim. But, if you play other VR games, especially room scale stuff, it’s a no brainier and definitely worth it. And should my G2 expire, the Q3 will fill in seamlessly. For travel, I’m taking the Q3.
Mine charges. Not fast but well enough that it seems to hold its own during heavy use. I have mine plugged into the USB at the back of the case (mobo), not the front. (Probably doesn’t make a difference anyway).
Can you keep your head sorta still and use your eyes to glance around at the instruments with the same clarity as the center? I’m tempted just based on the pancake lenses alone… Still not there yet…
Absolutely. Q3 is clear from edge to edge. The G2 has slightly better clarity/resolution in the center sweet spot, but, as you know, it tapers off towards the edges, and has a bit of those shiny ‘god rays’.
Swapping from one to the other, both were about the same overall. I didn’t have a wow moment putting on one over the other. I didn’t realize how much I appreciated not having screen door effect until I put the Q3 on. But you’re right, being able to scan from edge to edge without moving your head is nice.
Only having used the Q3 now for a few hours, I’d say its comparable to the G2 overall. Better, but not $600 better, at least for sit down simming. But if this is your primary hobby… Let’s just say I’m not sending it back, haha.

Custom OpenXR runtime? Does it add 10% over the native Oculus runtime, or over previous OpenXR runtimes? Guess I’m curious why and if i should use that.
