Harrier Sundown

This week the last US Harrier squadron flew its final flights.

I didn’t fly her long, but she was a good bird.

Stunning pic borrowed from the Internet.

P.S. On a related topic; according to ready room rules once your aircraft winds up on a stick outside a drive in, you are officially old.

P.P.S. If you remember when they used to do such things, or what a drive in was, then you are officially extraordinarily old.

Good thing for you both drive-ins and sticking old warhorses on poles outside them are a thing of the past, old man

salute to the harrier, one glorious bit of kit from a more civilised era when the reds were the Bad guys and we were the Good guys.

I am trying to think of which aircraft are left in RAF service that were there when I was serving..

When I joined up we had the Harrier, Jaguar, Tornado, Phantom, C130, Tristar, VC-10, Buccaneer, Tucano, Hawk, Dominie (HS125), BAE 146 (Queens Flight), Andover, Wessex, Sea King, Puma and Chinook. I think all that remains from that list is the Hawk and Chinook.

Some great aircraft in that list!

Right?

Was the Canberra still around as PRU? I used to love seeing that at the air show.

Technically the Lancaster is still in service.

How could I forget the Canberra ? Yes, it was still in service, based at RAF Wyton IIRC. I believe they still used it for photographic reconnaissance but also there were some ELINT Canberras as well.

Just Spain and Italy using the Harrier now.. and they are transitioning to the F-35B.

If we’re going there then so is the HMS Victory?

A stout ship with a heart of oak. Long may her colours fly!

Well, we have one in the town I attended high school that has continuously operated since the 60’s. It’s called “Kirts drive in” and it’s excellent!

On Topic, Always sad to see an old warrior retire  (especially when the replacement is just, you know, such a good bird. )
