I know. I’ll go stand in a corner. ![]()
I’d rather have fewer quality beers than more beers of that nature, but that’s just me. The problem I have with beer is not only the added calories from the beverage itself, but also the fact that I tend to pair it with food that generally is bad for me as well like fries or chips.
I don’t consider myself a beer snob, in that I will drink a PBR or Miller Lite at friend’s gatherings without blinking an eye. But my wife is on Keto atm and bought some Corona Premier. I tried some to see how drinkable it is. There must be better alternatives. Maybe wine or bourbon, which is only 60 calories per ounce. Yuengling Light is fine, but don’t know if they have distribution in NC. Miller Light is a also pretty good alternative. You can actually taste the hops in ML. Let’s have a light beer tasting here, MUDSPIKE policy permitting ![]()
The beer tasting sheet that our brewery uses.
Isn’t Guinness supposed to be one of the lowest calorie beers out there?
Yeah…when I can find it, Michelob Ultra Amber is actually my preferred low carb beer. They don’t stock it often at my local grocery though.
So is she cooking separate meals for herself?
Our house is a zoo right now at dinner-time…my wife is mostly eating Purple Carrot vegan stuff…I’m making low carb Keto pizzas and stuff…and the kids are eating “normal” food. So we have three different meals coming out of the kitchen at the same time.
Yesterday I went off my Keto diet for a single day…which means it will probably take me 48 or 72 hours to get back into ketosis. We did a 9 mile, pretty vigorous hike (very steep) and according to my FitBit I burned around 5,000 calories. We packed in Subway Spicy Italian sandwiches for the lunch break/picnic…so there was those carbs, and after the hike I decided since I’d fallen off the wagon I might as well have some tacos and margaritas for dinner.

There is a good chance my body burned those carbs immediately and didn’t revert much out of ketosis…but the margaritas probably slammed the door shut on that. Going to fast all day today until dinner, try to get in a short bike ride today (my calves are feeling it from all the downhill hiking yesterday), and try to kick start back into Keto as soon as possible.
This time definitely feels different. I feel the motivation and really my cravings have really subsided…probably because I have a concrete goal (185 by age 50). At the rate I’m going, I’ll reach the goal way before my next birthday…so at that point it will turn into maintenance, but I don’t want to count those chickens before they hatch. Coming up on the tough time of the year…getting colder and Thanksgiving and Christmas. I have warm riding clothes though…so no excuses not to get out there.
I just switched to pretty much totally cutting out beer and having a glass of wine or a couple fingers of whiskey every now and again. Much less carbs. ![]()
Also, tracking my calories obsessively is a big help- I’ve become less and less impressed with MyFitnessPal in the last couple of years (things are broken and not getting fixed, obviously gamed ‘verified’ nutritional information, activity tracking is showing impossibly high calorie burns, no tech support whatsoever) and made the switch to Loseit early this year https://www.loseit.com/. There are still things that could be better, but it seems more workable than MFP right now.
How do you know you’re in a ketosis stage? I’ve been on keto for few weeks now and I don’t think I’m quite there.
Also no beer. Red Label is delicious though.
Testing strips are the best way to know. But you are pretty much guaranteed to get into ketosis if you are eating less than 20 grams of carbs per day. It depends a bit on your metabolism and weight though…for some people it might be under 35 grams or so…
These are the strips I use. Once you see you are in ketosis…no real need to use them as long as you are adhering to the diet…
Thanks for the link. I was under the impression that they were expensive. But 6$ for 150 is an easy sell.
Oh I like that. That’s going to be stolen for my nano brews. ![]()
I am a UPS driver. There is a lot of pressure to skip lunches, but we get up to an hour and I make a point of taking the whole thing every day. Luckily, I live close enough to my route to come home for my lunch, so that makes the decision as to how much time to take a lot easier. I started prepping lunches on Sundays so while I am at home I can either spend time getting some chores done or starting dinner to help my wife out a bit, or just sit down and rest a little. Dinner has been challenging this year since our volume has exploded causing us to start later than we used to and work longer hours. It is a rare weekday that I can get home before 9pm. This has lead to a lot of crock pot and sous vide meals in our house, or picking things that I can re-heat easily.
I can imagine - COVID avoidance must mean that Amazon is absolutely killing it. Then you had Prime Day last week…and next Thanksgiving and Christmas. You guys deserve the month of January off! Thanks for being part of the logistics chain.
So yeah…still doing really well. My calendar shows I was 233 lbs. on September 3rd…now sitting at 210 lbs. and exercising pretty much every day. Riding anywhere from 18 to 30 miles a day…and started to try running last week. Going to ease into it. I signed up for an Ironman on my 50th birthday (September 26 next year)…so now that I have a concrete goal I have great incentive.
That’s great! I just turned 39 so I had the same goal, just 10 years removed.
Finally BMI is 25. P90X3 has been done for ~4th month. And on keto diet. Doing well, I think.
Best of luck with that Chris. You are talking of a full Iron Man (2.6 mile swim followed by a 112 mile bike ride and then a 26.2 mile run) ? ![]()
Yeah…the full IM
- just over the border there in Chattanooga…so pretty convenient venue. I was considering doing the half IM down in Cozumel…the logistics of that are a bit more daunting. This one I can drive to and spend a couple nights. And…it is a down-current swim! Yes!
Erika did the Chattanooga IM a couple of years ago. They had to cancel the swim portion that year due to a lot of rain the day before the event…but she had a great ride and run.
