I knew the Wild Weasel Phantom wasn’t coming… but it still hurts to hear it won’t be coming…
Also perhaps I’ll have to listen to the full thing but the comments on the Eurofighter are concerning. Not that I believe Heatblur will necessarily have a poor product but just surprising.
I have to be honest and say I was somewhat underwhelmed by The Phantom segment of The podcast. There were only a handful of questions…most of which can be found on HB Phantom FAQ thread n the forums.
There was really no concrete info on Development Progress…other than to say Project SME’s have received very early builds that aren’t complete.
Also somewhat disappointing is that work on a Naval Variant won’t begin until The F-4E is out of Early Access …And just a reminder The F-14 is STILL in EA.
I guess that it beats the alternative. It was good to hear about Jester 2.0, I think. He did mention that it possibly won’t be as featureful. Hmm, wiser, but less features. Maybe he’ll be able to yell, “Dead bug!”

Dead Bug
A Now (maybe) Extinct Fighter Pilot Bar Game
The object of every fighter pilot/WSO bar room game was to get someone to buy you a bar drink. Among such games was the game ‘Dead Bug’.
Dead Bug Rules:
When the person holding the ‘Hammer’ shouted out the word ‘Dead Bug’, everybody within earshot range had to fall on the floor on their back with their feet and hands up in the air imitating a dead bug.
The last person to make it all the way down into dead bug position was the ‘Loser’ and had to buy everyone in bar a drink. The ‘Loser’ then held the ‘Hammer’ and was the only one that could call out Dead Bug the next time. Dead Bug could only be called out once on any given day.
Non squadron members, along with guest and civilians who were in the bar at the time were always exempt from doing the Dead Bug. Visiting fighter pilots/WSO’s were not exempt. The Hammer was also exempt from doing the Dead Bug when he or she shouting it out.
I think elements of the IRST still are as well, IIRC.
I’m a little disappointed we won’t see a Phantom Wild Weasel, since that was the fighter’s last (USAF) role, up until after the Gulf War even. Would sure be neat, and the SEAD/DEAD mission and equipment might dovetail well with an eventual A-6B somewhere down the road…
I’m just happy they’re considering doing a naval Phantom at all, even if it is after the E.
I still think a B would have been the better choice (over the E, because it can stand in for the C and K), but given the comments above about the Eurofighter and A-10C 2010 and 2020 (great naming convention, by the way ) I realise I might be in the minority being fine with mishmash aircraft or non-authentic variants standing in for others. I have been unabashedly flying the Mirage F1 around in AA camoflage even though it isn’t the right variant for that and lacks the refuelling probe at the moment…
Me too, I even copied the AdA liveries to Saved Games and changed the description.lua so I can fly with purely cosmetic probe and belly camera on the CR liveries.
Back on topic:
Love the F-14 news! Glad the early variants are almost done and looking forward to the F-14A Persian Gulf campaign!
And TARPS is almost here!!
I am actually more of a ground-pounder at heart and will probably be using the TARPS pod at least as much as the actual weapons on the Tomcat
Just the mention of the TARPS pod, combined with the announcement of the Kola Peninsula map, is giving me Janes Superhornet vibes (remember that mission where you have to escort the Tomcat on a recon run?)
