My ‘thing’ with the Phantom was growing up on USAF bases (or very near) and seeing them every day; building the models; working with them professionally a bit into the 80’s. The aphorism’s abound:
Given enough power you can make a brick fly
More aerodynamic going in reverse (think the A-6 may win out here)
The Typhoon by itself, I’m actually ambivalent… OK it is Heatblur and there are SME’s involved but it will still be in the back of my mind “How accurate/realistic have they been able to model an in service 4th Gen aircraft?”
But. Typhoon + Kola Map = Too much nostalgia to resist
And it looks stunning, although I think I would have preferred the Viggen for tearing around at low level, landing on roads etc. I’ll probably have to get it though. From the screen shots, it looks like we won’t have to wait all that long.
I believe Dino of IFE originally brought a very good Freeware version of The Tomcat to FSX well over 10yrs ago…So they obviously have a passion for the aircraft…Best of Luck to them.
Viper, Hornet, Harrier, A-10C…all 4th gen in service. All slated to be replaced by F-35s, originally, too!
Yes the Harrier and legacy Hornet are dwindling, but the A-10 and Viper are stubbornly sticking around (like the B-52 and F-15C) and I think DCS has done them justice.
Of course they’re not perfect, they never will be, but I think it qualifies as Next Best Thing.
curious whats the reasoning behind this? like we will be able to fly Heatblur’s F14 all around the world not just over DCS maps?
asking because I tend to have different sims for different planes. I consider it little schizophrenic having the option to buy same plane in multiple sims. like full-fidelity SpitIX for XPlane, DCS, MSFS.
It’s not exactly a new concept… I have the FlyingIron Spitfire and Lightning for both XP11 and MSFS, as well as the Just Flight Hawk. Obviously there will be some pretty major limitations with the MSFS version of the HB Tomcat, but I think this could end up being a great thing for DCS in the long run.
Good point. Maybe my use of 4th Gen is at fault - I guess what I meant was that the Typhoon is ‘newer’ and possibly more difficult to get accurate/unclassified data. But now that I think about it the avionics (especially radar and EW systems) of any post cold war jet sim is going to be 99% guesswork.
Also, it shows how demanding we have become - did I care if EF2000 was a 100% accurate representation of the real thing? Nope, not at all… It was fun and that was all that mattered.
Did they ever say what tranche/version they’re doing? 1, 2, 2a, 3, whatever? Will we be getting full multirole, A2A only, limited ground strike?
I think the 1 is largely out of service in the countries behind making the EF, although it might still be on lease in some other countries.
For Tranche 1:
Block I is LRIP
Block II is still Pure A2A
Block V adds A2G
For Tranche 2:
Block VIII Upgrades Processors
Block X is EOC Stage 1 (Enhanced Operational Capacity) Updates DASS and ACMI, Adds IFF Mode 5, AIM-120C-5, GBUs, LITENING, IRIS-T
Anything after that EOC2/EOC3 are still pretty much classified.
EOC1 would put it on par with the Hornet and Viper.
An interesting idea that I’ve seen bandied about is that for a virtual squadron or mil-sim group, they could actually do “workups”, say at Nellis in DCS, and then “deploy” as a group in MSFS - flying a cross country to trans-Atlantic for example, stop off in the Mediterranean for exercises at Incirlik in DCS and then transit from Incirlik to Al Khasab in MSFS.
I personally haven’t the slightest bit of time to do that, but some of these groups would be all over it.
