Helicopter pilot finds 'strange' monolith in remote part of Utah

Oh yes, you are absolute proof that the Creator is an artist… with a nasty sense of humour

Well, people at work, in the Simulator, called me Beast…

Ah Duchamp and Fountain, had a great dust up in my art history class in college about that one.

A little background, I learned to weld in high school, and actually got enough classes over the summer to retroactively get me associates in welding technology once I got the general courses (math, history, english, etc) done in college. I ended up taking a semester of “metal arts,” jewelry really, in college as it was one of two welding classes I could find. In said metal arts class our Professor was a nationally recognize metal artist, her work was very technically complex and damn impressive. She was also most of the stereotypes you expect of a college art professor. Being the only non-art major in the class, I learned how to “talk the talk” without buying into it.

Fast forward 9-10 years I am back in college finishing my degree. I am a full time major city police officer working the evening shift of the busiest most crime ridden part of town, taking the one class I have left. My fine arts credit (ironic as I was 4 year letterman in theatre in high school). Sitting behind me is a gentleman who served in Korea as a Marine. I am probably 30 or so, Chuck (the Marine) is at least in his late sixties. Our lecturer is 25-26.

We get to Fountain and I express that I personally don’t feel it’s art, so much as a genius piece of marketing/advertising. It single handily launched Duchamp to the heights of the Dada movement and left his mark in history, for someone who was arguably a fringe artist. Our lecturer doubles down and starts to launch into “art speak” that really is as ridiculous as is parodied to be. I responded in kind, resulting in about 5 minutes of the most ridiculously high brow, self important, over the top “dialogue” between us as I’ve ever had in my life as I attempted to get her to understand my point in a language she’d understand. Our lecture then she solicits the classes opinion. There are a variety of opinions, and have zero issue if people disagree that’s kind of the point of art right? Don’t however, ask me for mine and then tell me I’m wrong (unless you can prove it). Chuck agrees with me and gives an elegant response.

Finally, our lecturer, who’s work history (as she told us herself) consisted of working as an unpaid assistant to the assistant director of a gallery in NYC, tell us both that “once you have some life experiences it will make more sense.” I’ll skip the details of the call I had been to less then 12 hours before (I got off at 0200, and had class at 0700), which was crash fatality. I shot a glance over to Chuck, we both shook our heads and pretty much just ignored her for the remaining week or so of the class.

Art is always in the eye of the beholder, I just sometimes question other peoples eye sight.

Maybe they should analyze it.

How cool would it be if it was found to be a forgotten promotional tool for 2001. Like an advert that just got installed and then lost in the shuffle. Some 90 yr old ad exec wakes up in bed one night, wide eyed and just mouths ‘dammit, I knew I forgot something’

Officials are now calling for its removal as “it is illegal to install structures or art without authorization on federally managed public lands, no matter what planet you’re from,”

And the funny part is that modern humans, given a chance will react pretty much the same way. The only difference being that there will be more selfies taken!

Well, it is a huge lump of metal. It has some worth.
People steal, that’s just their thing.

It just returned home again…

My first thought when I saw the story was to wonder how long it would take for someone to steal it and if it would get stolen before the state removed it.

OK, I don’t know what’s going on but someone thought it was funny to make another one and planting it in Romania!

EDIT: I am not sure about the affiliation of “the independent”- i’m not posting for any political affiliation, just for the news.
