I just did a thing…

Talking of upgrades … I did something a bit rash yesterday …

But there is some justification or so I keep telling myself, the youngest daughter gets my old 3060ti and power supply :grinning:so it’s an upgrade for both of us

Nice! On a performance vs price ratio, I’m sure that you are getting a far better ‘bang for your buck’ than I will. Congrats to both you and your daughter! Was there a particular sim or game that made you decide it was time to pull the trigger?

VR and DCS world, with the dynamic campaign coming, I thought a bit more vram would be nice, and it would be nice to turn up some of the settings, also the daughter wants to start messing with the Unreal engine … and her 960 was getting a bit dated

I literally (mostly) just did the same thing! I just picked up a 4070 Ti Super to replace the 3060 Ti I’ve been using for the “office” PC! The choice was also mostly VR related, only I didn’t need to purchase a new PSU! The 3060 Ti is also replacing the 1660 Ti I’ve been using in the HTPC!

On a side note, I ran into a problem that was related to an oversight on my part! Instead of using two separate PCIe cables for the 4070, I initially daisy chained a single PCIe cable! After a few hours of benchmarks, the PC did a hard reset, while I was in VR! I’ve since plugged in a second PCIe cable from the PSU, and currently everything is stable! Just a cautionary tale for anyone else considering the same upgrade!

thats the main reason I got the new PSU it has a dedicated high power GPU cable, also my 750w would have been getting close to the mark

A 750 would make me nervous as well! Running FurMark to stress test the 4070 after I had connected both PCIe cables, resulted in ~225w @ ~80%! I currently have a CORSAIR 850 for reference.

the quick job of swapping out a PSU and a GPU … nearly 2 hours …then did the youngest daughters … 30 min but she is over the moon with her PC, which is a amd FX 8350 with my ex 3060ti. but it only has 16gb ram, thats next on the list for her

just ran a quick flight in DCS with my quest 2 and it was pegged at 72 fps now just have to fiddle with some settings to see what it can do

Here’s the DCS settings I currently run w/ a Rift S @ 80hz to give me (mostly) 80 FPS:

Using OTT to set an SS (PD) of 1.2, ASW to auto and an FoV of H: 0.97 V: 0.97.

Also, using OXR TC to set Foveated Rendering to Quality / Wide, Turbo Mode On (disables ASW) and Frame Rate Throttling to 82.

This is w/ an i5 9600K / 4070 Ti S.

Seems like your 4070Ti S is working very nicely for you @Brennus . :sunglasses:

A GPU swap is as easy as RAM.
A PSU swap is time consuming and almost as big a PITA as a mobo swap.

I will agree with that :grinning:

any sign of the arrival :grinning:

Yes indeed, it has arrived. I’m getting it all set up now. It’s a long process, and it seems that MSFS isn’t in any hurry to install for some reason. I did a quick flight with VTOL VR and everything seems to be working just fine.

MSFS in silky smooth VR with no reprojection needed. I just followed VR Flight Sim Guy’s setting to use with the Quest 3, which seems to work well as a starting point. :star_struck:

I noticed that the fan noise on my new PC gets pretty loud when under load, so I downloaded a monitoring app…

It seems my CPU is getting a tad hot. I’m not noticing much in the way of slow downs, but evidently the system is applying some level of throttling back. I’m guessing this is something I need to address?

Wht kind of cooler does it have?

The cooler is listed as:

EKWB RGB 360MM AIO Liquid Cooler

I’m sure I am working it hard, cranking up the setting in VR, but I was a little surprised that I am getting the CPU that hot.

After a quick bit of googling, it seems like the i9 14900 is an absolute beast of a processor… but can be tricky to tame with regards to heat, I remember Linus tech tips saying heat could be a problem with it

I agree with what @tempusmurphy says here. Seems like the 14900 is enough to heat your house.
I found this interesting.

An AIO Liquid cooler especially for delidded CPUs…
