I got a 126 MB patch this morning via Steam and it seems ok.
Battle of Stalingrad Experts, a question!
If I turn off the HUD thing with âHâ then is there a way to still see what on earth the Germans and Russians are shouting at me? It makes single player wingman stuff harder to have to learn another language. Is there a config switch or something?
Also, in VR when signing in the app seems to pause for 10 seconds and freezes the display. It sort of makes me feel ill (ah, good old VR, where bugs can literally cause your to feel sick). I wonder if there is a way to sign in automatically or something. Iâll have a poke around, but if anyone knowsâŠ
One thing @Brix that might help (and doesnât seem common knowledge, but apologies if you knew already) is that you can fly the Kuban map with the version you have. If you just join one of the Multiplayer practice servers that people put up and choose a mission flight away from others etc, then you can get a good play around with the new map without purchase.
Obviously you canât edit missions etc and there will be other people playing, but for a nice look around itâs easy to just pick a server and then fly like itâs single player. When/if the map and new aircraft set go on sale then youâll have a better idea what youâll be getting.
The MP map set-up and purchasing is sort of the opposite to DCS, and people (including myself) sort of forget that.
My BoX install is Steam, but I gather that you can buy each of the 3 Battles separately if you purchase them from the online store. And Iâve read that buying from the online store doesnât force one to start with BoS. Just curious, if one buys BoS, BoM, and then BoK from the online store, does one have 3 different installs? Or are they integrated during install? Obviously, with the Steam version you have to begin with BoS, and the other two modules are integrated, meaning only having to tweak one group of settings.
As I understand it (which isnât that much of a claim, could be wrong here) is that there is only a single version of the sim. The steam version and the standalone are the same, just of course, the steam version being downloaded from there.
BoS/BoM/BoK are all the same package. The serial keys just unlock the various planes and maps for different scenarios (i.e. the map can be used in MP if the host owns it but you donât, but in SP you canât access it unless bought etc).
Itâs not like DCS where there are different things to download, itâs all downloaded already with what you have today.
The serial keys for premium planes, BoM and BoK can be bought via the 1C/777 shop today and work on any version (i.e. Steam) while (at the moment I suppose because earlier in development) the BoK package and any planes it might contain arenât yet available to be bought via the Steam store. The only other quirk is that the Steam product shows BoS as the âbaseâ with the other bits as âDLCâ that you buy, while on the 1C/777 store you can buy just BoM or BoK if you wanted to. I guess thatâs because Steam needs a base game for DLC to rely on and it would get confusing if there were different âbase gamesâ to purchase for the DLC to be added to.
So I do not have the steam version. I have purchased from the online store. This actually cracks me up because it is so simple and well executed, but we are all trained to have multiple modules and two to three installs that we canât wrap our heads around how it works.
You have one launcher just like Elite Dangerous. When you open it updates to the latest version, with all of the content. When you click play it loads the game and brings you to the Login page, just like Rise of Flight. When you log in you are given access to whatever you have purchased on that account. You can fly whatever you have purchased single player or multiplayer. You can fly any map in multiplayer but only the map(s) you purchased in single. Thatâs it.
So the only difference with the Steam version (which is what I have) is that Steam will update the install files like any other game (i.e. âDownloadsâ will do its thing in Steam) and then when signing in to BoS, and it does the update check, it has nothing to do. Once signed in any Steam BoS purchases are automatically seen by/applied to your BoS account, so effectively we see the same things wherever we purchase.
Yeah, I thought that might be the case. I guess that I am trying to build an argument for having everything BoX on Steam, but really no advantage other than having it automatically update everything for you. (Mark Hamill in Wing Commander III, âI have majors who do that for me.â)
Thanks - I didnât know that. I havenât done any online flying yet - but I would like to.
Iâm stuck out of Steam, now, unless I buy BoS on that as well. Only KS pledgers can get a Steam key for items bought in the online shop.
Oh I just remembered - I have a quick question: I was flying a circuit in the La-3 and doing a very lazy turn to port, when the starboard aileron broke off. I was at low speed and as I say, a lazy turn, but it seemed to be a very windy day.
Is this normal in BoS?
Nope. Maybe you ground looped a previous landing and damaged the wing. Sometimes it looks fine with nothing but a little scraping noiseâbut turns out worse than you thought. The only other thing that will damage an aileron (outside of combat) is exceding the design speed limit of the plane. Ailerons are often the first contols to flutter.
Well it wasnât overspeed, on a simple short circuit of the airfield - however, I do remember taking off across the field, after I got frustrated with the daft ground handling again. Going along the runway at a gentle speed, working up to take-off and the damn thing just inexcplicably spins round without me having done anything (was trying to keep it stable at that point, before upping the throttle slightly, but never got as far as that).
Would you believe, taking off across the field is far easier in this thing than on the runway! Maybe thatâs down to ice - otherwise I refuse to believe itâs accurate, having flown RAF single engined prop tail-draggers myself. The engine likely wasnât as powerful as in these fighters, but when you are at a constant speed, that shouldnât matter.
(I reread your post and see you have experience in conventional gear airplanes. Sorry)âŠ
I did it several times (at walking speed) with my airplane (a Pitts S-1) when I first got it. And that was with a locking tailwheel! These things require great care and must be taxied slowly. Once you get a head of steam in the real thing the rudder forces increase, offsetting their sensitivity. In the sim, the rudder forces are obviously always light, making overcontrolling a constant threat.
Not germane to your issue but in IL2 some airlpanes start with the prop pitch set to coarse. Taxiing and takeoff is impossible until you reset the pitch to fine. Some German planes have an auto prop setting. These planes taxi and takeoff more easily with the prop in manual and also set to fine.
What were you flying Brix? Iâm ex RAF myself.
Are random failures simulated in BOSBOMBOK?
Just a thoughtâŠ
Good question. I just fired up the Editor to see if I could find a random failure trigger or similar and found none. Mind you I havenât used the editor since Rise of Flight and it is a bit more complicated now. My best answer is probably not.
Only the good old Chipmunk! Lovely plane. When the instructor flew the first loop demonstration, I was clinging on to the sides of the cockpit like grim death! Even though I was strapped in so tight I couldnât move, anyway!
Good times.
Ah, the good ol Chippy. I almost had a chance to get checked out in one (privately owned) while I was still in the RAF, but unfortunately I couldnât afford it at the time (You donât make much as a Senior Aircraftman).
I did manage to get myself checked out in the Grob 109 Vigiliant, which I flew durning the weekends, taking Air Cadets up for air experience flights. Good times!
You are lucky! I really would like to have a go in one of the many Tutors based around here. I fly it a lot in P3D. Mind you, If I did have the chance, Iâd rather take the Tucano up, any day
Not that they would let me anywhere near a cockpit these days!
