I have never understood how people can work up such a resentment over not getting exactly the toy they want, when they want it. Mild disappointment and a sigh, is the most I can muster… Nothing I can’t cure with a beer, anyway.
Rheinland is awesome! Normandy will rock!
But I’d really, really like a flyable C-47… You taking notes, @777Studios_Jason?
Imo, Something that they did that brought on some of this angst by its userbase, considering the Pacific had been mentioned at one point as a possible expansion module, was to use Morse code as a teaser on the same day in history that the Japanese fleet left the Kurile Islands on their trek to attack Pearl Harbor. I made the same leap but I was not ready to commit Seppuku when it did not materialize. In the overall scheme of things I am just happy there is still new content being released.
I’m disappointed, but I’m not upset or angry. It is indeed small potatoes in the larger scheme of things.
I will admit I’m puzzled why it’s considered a bridge too far when it has been tackled by previous sims from Il-2 to CFS2 to PAW and AOTP, so I don’t know if it’s a corner they’re stuck in because of what they believe their customer base is accustomed to getting or what.
I don’t think it’s a lack of imagination or desire, my best guess is there are engine limitations that are going to make it costlier than it could’ve been had they designed it a different way. Unfortunate if so, because I don’t believe we’ll see any brand-new engine here.
Worst-case scenario DCS will become the Pac War sim as they have at least stated the intent to make some of those planes and we already have carriers (albeit modern) in it. I would’ve preferred it in Il-2, but it is what it is.
Who knows, maybe if MS Flight 2020 does well enough they may consider getting back into the CFS business. My guess is that someone will fill that rather sizable gap that is currently the PTO.
Well if you’re going to break it down that way, the other maps are just a lot of grass and with a few trees, not really interesting when you put it that way either
This raises an interesting point for me. If you don’t have full documentation, why not make educated guesses based on historical evidence and comparisons where possible? It’s not like people could claim they’re inaccurate, since there’s no documentation to the contrary. . . Best case scenario, it would throw the rivet counters into such a frenzy that said documentation might actually surface. Win win!
Of course, there would still be people complaining with that method too, but I think it would make a lot more people happy around here.
Flip side of that is then you have a ton of research work to piece together, which isn’t cheap either. As an example, I believe you can get detailed data on captured aircraft from the US archives, but that’s a lot of stuff to sift through. It also doesn’t cover every aircraft or the best examples of a type…
This ^
Never forget the niche we’re in.
Developer must chose wisely, where to put their efforts. Development cost money. Real money. Imagine starting a big project like that, without knowing if you can pull it off. One bad decision and they could be out of business…
Sure, the Pacific would be great! A lot of things would be great.
Flying Circus Vol. 2 is where my hope resides. And that flyable C-47
Including the Gotha I hope. I know so many people want a pacific theatre but some of us would like the Mediterranean for Italy and Malta or Norway and the North Atlantic
You’d also need a team working on boats for both sides. I was thinking that you could do a Great Battles map called The Slot (Solomon Islands), but you would need a couple of classes of carriers, subs, battleships, destroyers, cruisers, and transports IMO, to make it feel real.
FC v2 is more about the 3D models and porting the stuff over. They already did their research for RoF, it was perfectly valid and there’s no need to reinvent the wheel.
The data for Il-2 46, while still available, I’m sure is nowhere near what they need here.
As for the theater, the terrain was never what was interesting, it was the naval forces fighting them. And to a lesser extent, the ground-based forces alongside them. Midway, Coral Sea, Wake…not to mention the CBI if you’re into that (which is where CFS4 was going to be, BTW)…and of course Japan itself.
Zeros, Hellcats, Corsairs, Oscars…I’d like to see them all in BoX.
We’ve already got the USAAF fighters in, and some RAF, but USN/RN/IJN are missed.
