Is there a talent you wish you had?

I spent a large part of yesterday listening to some of my all time favorite movie soundtracks such as “The Last of the Mohicans”, “Glory”, “Braveheart”, “Gladiator” and “Blade Runner” and it just made me wish yet again that I had the talent to compose music. It must be quite a visceral experience for talented musicians to go through their creative process of composing music.

I wish I could program in Assembler 6502 - specifically for the Commodore 64.
I’d make lots of cool simple yet fun videogames.

I wish I could kite-surf (thinking @BeachAV8R’s post from earlier today). I wish I understood Japanese (or French or piglatin or any other language besides the abortion we call “English” here in New Jersey). My daughter and I were watching to sailboats race south down the Hudson yesterday. I’d like to properly know how to sail. I’ve got a thousand more but that’s a start.

I also wish @komemiute could code assembler!

I’ve always wanted to be a better writer than I am. Ah well.

I tried writing my own science fiction short story when I was in high school but what I noticed soon afterwards is that all of my story ideas were highly derivative of either science fiction movies or tv shows that I had previously seen so I gave up.

I hear the Hudson is great for some sea plane flying… :smiling_imp:

I am no longer Airbus qualified nor do I wish to be!

I wish I could play guitar a lot better than I can, but more than that to be a ‘concert level’ pianist.

I wish i could articulate my thoughts better, along with organising the stuff in my head better. Especially when I’m talking to someone who is smarter than me.

I share that one! I am universally at a loss how to communicate verbally. I do OK with the written word mainly because I am not interrupted. I do OK in aviation because the language is simple and precise and has very little room for interpretation. But the fault is mine. I just don’t know how to make words come out of my mouth without totally bungling meaning, tone and intent. “Conversation” is, for me, synonymous with “regret”.

Huh. I found @Victork2 to be a perfectly cogent and coherent conversation partner  I reckon you guys are being hard on yourself.

I’d like the abiltity to master an employable skill. Like actually master it. I’m fairly good at learning something up to mediocrity but no matter how hard I try I peak at mediocrity; a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. Even with my current job I struggle to remember things or make any advancement whatsoever in professional development.

For whatever reason I was reminded of this while stumbling upon this thread while listening to Dan Snow interview Roel Konijnendijk about the Battle of Thermopylae. This guy has soldier numbers, dispositions, dates, a million things committed to memory and it’s absolutely mindblowing as someone who can’t maintain detailed memories of my own life

Rather than seeing that as a negative. I actually think it is a positive. You are adaptable… I think it is great that Roel Konijnendijk knows everything about the Battle of Thermopylae, but that aint going to pay the bills if nobody else cares!

Put it this way. Everybody loves Koalas, and if they don’t then they are are totally heartless and I hate you :stuck_out_tongue: But, they are highly specialised and super-adapted to a niche environment and because of this are in danger of extinction. Rats on the other hand… Be the Rat.

Well, that’s kinda the problem. Roel gets paid a lot because people do care about his knowledge. The mediocre things I can do get paid very little if at all because most people care less about my skills than they do the Battle of Thermopylae :joy:

I’m sure in an apocalyptic situation I may be of use.
